Traditional Eid habtas add colour to markets in Oman
Muscat – Since the 24th of Ramadan, governorates across Oman have been hosting Eid habtas – traditional open-air markets that offer a range of goods, including livestock. As the first major event leading up to Eid al Fitr, these markets attract Omanis, residents and tourists, creating a lively atmosphere in the sultanate.
Also known as halqa (ring), these markets are held in open spaces shaded by palm, mango and ghaf trees; or near historical castles and forts. They serve as both cultural and commercial hubs, drawing people of all ages.
Some of the largest and most popular habtas take place in the wilayats of Nizwa, Rustaq, Sinaw and Ibri, bringing in visitors from various part of Oman, particularly as Eid approaches.
Most habtas operate from sunrise until around 11am, though some extend up to 1pm depending on the weather conditions. The early morning timing attracts visitors from neighbouring villages and wilayats, with some markets running for several days.
Sami al Hinai, a livestock trader at the Rustaq Livestock Market, noted the strong trading activity this year. 'There is a high volume of cows, sheep and goats, both local and imported. Prices are considered affordable.'
He added that the habta on the 25th of Ramadan saw a significant influx of sheep, particularly from the local breeders in Rustaq and South Batinah, reflecting strong demand for locally raised livestock.
Salim al Jabri, a participant in the Nakhal habta, highlighted the market's appeal. 'The Nakhal market, held on the 27th of Ramadan, attracts buyers and sellers from surrounding wilayats and other governorates, especially for livestock. The market's location near Nakhal Fort adds to its charm.'
Beyond livestock, the habtas offer a variety of goods, including Omani ghee, palm-frond skewers, barbecue sticks, firewood, knives and tools for meat preparation. Visitors also find honey, spices, nuts, Omani sweets and imported goods such as clothing, toys, and children's items for Eid celebrations.
'These habtas are an integral part of Oman's cultural heritage, combining commerce with tradition. They remain a highly anticipated event for those preparing for the Eid festivities,' said Jabri.

Omani Mountain Destination project moves to design phase
MUSCAT: Plans for the establishment of a landmark mountain destination in Al Jabal Al Akhdar—one of Oman's highest summits—have advanced to the design stage. The Ministry of Housing and Urban Planning has invited qualified international consultancy firms to bid for the master planning and detailed engineering design of the estimated RO 1.2 billion mega development. Known as the Al Jabal Al Aali project, or the Omani Mountain Destination, the development is envisioned as a mixed-use residential, hospitality, and wellness district spanning an 11.8 km² site atop Al Jabal Al Akhdar in Al Dakhiliya Governorate. Part of a prestigious portfolio of sustainable cities promoted by the Ministry, Al Jabal Al Aali will feature more than 2,500 homes, 2,000 hotel rooms, a health and wellness hub, as well as biodiversity and sports facilities. Situated at an elevation of 2,400 metres above sea level, the destination promises cooler climes and breathtaking natural surroundings—rugged mountains, deep ravines, terraced farms, and endemic juniper trees. In addition to the overall master plan, the selected consultant will be responsible for the comprehensive infrastructure design, including planning, architecture, engineering, and tender preparation and award for major infrastructure and building components. A key highlight of the development is the Western Wellness Village, an integrated health and ecotourism cluster featuring approximately 500 residential and hotel units backed by RO 200 million in investments. Spanning 630,000 m², the village will underscore the project's appeal as a premier wellness destination. Designed to harmonize with the natural terrain, the new district will include paved walkways, open squares, green spaces, and water features. Mobility solutions will be enhanced by a proposed cable car system, while an extreme sports facility will cater to thrill-seekers with options such as mountain biking, bungee jumping, and rock climbing. Upon full buildout across multiple phases, Al Jabal Al Aali is expected to host a population of around 10,000 residents. The project forms part of Oman's broader urban development vision, which aims to attract billions of Omani rials in investment over the next decade across a suite of integrated tourism and residential projects. Alongside the flagship Sultan Haitham City in Al Khoud (Muscat Governorate), the portfolio includes Al Thuraya City in Bausher, a growing array of integrated neighbourhoods under the 'Souroh' brand, and other smart, sustainable urban developments. Omani citizens urged to avoid tense areas amidst regional unrest
MUSCAT: The Foreign Ministry urged Omani citizens in tense areas to exercise caution regarding their safety and security; and to leave whenever circumstances permit, due to the serious security repercussions in the region. Travellers bound for affected locations are advised to stay in close contact with their airlines to confirm schedules and avoid potential delays or cancellations. 'In light of the current developments in some neighbouring countries, we encourage passengers flying to impacted destinations to coordinate directly with their carriers prior to arriving at the airport,' the advisory stated. The airport operator emphasised that proactive communication is essential to ensure smooth travel plans and minimise inconvenience. It also reiterated its ongoing commitment to passenger safety and operational readiness. 'We appreciate your cooperation and wish you a safe journey, God willing,' the statement concluded. Nakhal unveils longest tourist walkway
Nakhal: The Wilayat of Nakhal in South Al Batinah Governorate has officially unveiled the longest tourist walkway in the region. The new path will connect the historic Nakhal Fort to the scenic Ain Al Thawwarah Park, covering a total distance of 3 kilometers. The walkway will pass through various natural springs, aflaj irrigation systems, and lush agricultural villages along Wadi Nakhal, offering a significant visual and ecological enhancement to the area. His Excellency Sheikh Khalifa bin Salih Al Busaidi, Wali of Nakhal, emphasized that the project is aimed at boosting tourism in the wilayat and highlighting the natural and cultural landmarks in the villages and farmlands along the route. The project will be executed in multiple phases, with the first phase spanning one kilometer. Subsequent phases will follow in due course. The total cost of the project, including attached service facilities, is expected to exceed 1 million Omani Rials. The walkway will be equipped with lighting, interlocking or stone paving, and a range of public amenities. The Wali also noted that local farm owners along the route will be given the opportunity to establish their own tourism projects in coordination with relevant authorities. These may include eco-lodges, cafés, and electric tourist carts that will transport visitors between the fort and Ain Al Thawwarah. This initiative aims to reduce traffic congestion at the park while also generating employment opportunities for local residents. The main committee overseeing the project has held its first meeting to approve the implementation plan and form sub-committees to begin execution.
