Pochettino Confident USMNT Has Time to Improve Before 2026 World Cup
TDT | Manama
Mauricio Pochettino remains optimistic about the United States Men's National Team's (USMNT) future despite back-to-back defeats in the Concacaf Nations League. After a disappointing 2-1 loss to Canada in the third-place match on Sunday, the Argentine coach assured fans that there is still ample time to make the necessary adjustments ahead of the 2026 FIFA World Cup.
The defeat against Canada followed a shocking 1-0 semifinal loss to Panama, raising concerns about the team's preparedness under Pochettino's leadership. However, the former Chelsea and Tottenham Hotspur manager, who took charge of the USMNT after leaving the Premier League last May, dismissed any long-term pessimism.
"It's better to lose now because we have time," Pochettino stated. "If we were in this situation a year from now, for sure, I'd tell you, 'Houston, we have a problem. SOS.'"
Despite the recent struggles, Pochettino emphasized his belief in the squad's potential and refused to allow negativity to creep in. "We are all disappointed, and the fans should feel that. But I won't let pessimism take over because I think we have good players. We will find a way to perform, and for sure, we will compete differently."
With the 2026 World Cup set to be co-hosted by the United States, Canada, and Mexico, expectations are high for the American squad to deliver on home soil. Their next opportunity for redemption comes in June, when they will host Turkey and Switzerland in a pair of friendly matches aimed at fine-tuning their squad.
As the countdown to the World Cup continues, all eyes will be on Pochettino to see if he can turn potential into results on the grandest stage.

Son to ‘wait and see' on Tottenham future after Saudi links
AFP | Seoul Son Heung-min has cast doubt on his Tottenham future after saying he will 'wait and see' what happens amid speculation the skipper could move to Saudi Arabia. The South Korean forward has a year left on his contract and has been linked with an exit after helping Spurs end their 17-year trophy drought. 'Rather than saying anything at this moment, I think we should all wait and see what happens,' the 32-yearold told reporters after South Korea's 4-0 World Cup qualifying win over Kuwait on Tuesday. 'But no matter where I end up, I will always do the best I can. It will never change.' Son lifted the Europa League trophy last month to claim his first piece of silverware with Tottenham after helping his team beat Manchester United 1-0 in Bilbao. Spurs have since fired coach Ange Postecoglou following a dismal Premier League campaign that saw them finish one place above the relegation zone. Son came under pressure after a series of underwhelming displays but he vowed to come back stronger next season, wherever he is playing. 'I know people may say I had a disappointing year but personally, this was a special season because you play football to win, and only winners are remembered,' said Son, who joined Tottenham from Germany's Bayer Leverkusen in 2015.

Pochettino problems mount as US routed 4-0 by Switzerland
AFP | Los Angeles An experimental United States line-up crashed to a 4-0 friendly home defeat to Switzerland on Tuesday, deepening the gloom around Mauricio Pochettino's squad one year out from hosting the World Cup. A game intended as a morale-boosting send-off before the USA take part in the CONCACAF Gold Cup unraveled in a disastrous first half that saw Switzerland 4-0 up after 36 minutes in Nashville. Dan Ndoye, Michel Aebischer, Breel Embolo and Johan Manzambi scored for Switzerland to leave a disgruntled home crowd at Geodis Park in Nashville raining boos down from the stands. The defeat was the fourth straight loss suffered by Pochettino's side, the first time the US has lost four in a row since 2007. Pochettino is planning for the USA's Gold Cup campaign, which kicks off on Sunday against Trinidad and Tobago, without several key players who are unavailable. AC Milan star Christian Pulisic was excused duty from the tournament after requesting a rest while Juventus duo Weston McKennie and Tim Weah are unavailable due to the Italian side's participation in the FIFA Club World Cup. Those absences left former Chelsea and Tottenham coach Pochettino having to dig deep to gauge the depth of his resources as the US builds towards next year's World Cup finals in the United States, Can-ada and Mexico. On Tuesday's evidence, the return of his European-based stars cannot come soon enough after Swit-zerland ran riot in a lopsided first half. Pochettino said he bore responsibility for picking the inexperienced line-up that were outclassed by the rampant Swiss. 'First of all it's my responsibility the choice of the starting 11. I wanted to give minutes to certain play-ers, but we were never in the game,' the Argentine said. US defender Walker Zimmerman attempted to put a brave face on the mauling, insisting there was still plenty of time for the side to improve before next year's World Cup. 'It's easy to look at one half and think this is all going to pieces, that we can't come back from a result like this,' Zimmerman told TNT television. 'But look at the build-up to 2022 -- we took down Morocco 3-0 and they made the semi-final. Things change. That was six months apart. 'So it's not the end of the world. We accept that it's not good enough and we realize that. That's where the disappointment comes in, but we have to flip the script and we've gotta make sure we do not come out like that ever again.'

No panic, but England ‘not good enough', says Kane
Captain Harry Kane said England must improve quickly if they are to contend for next year's World Cup after slumping to a 3-1 home friendly defeat by Senegal on Tuesday. A first ever defeat against African opposition has put England boss Thomas Tuchel under pressure just four games into his reign. After struggling past minnows Andorra 1-0 in World Cup qualifying on Saturday, Tuchel's 10 changes had little effect as Senegal ran out deserved winners in Nottingham thanks to goals from Ismaila Sarr, Habib Diarra and Cheikh Sabaly. 'Not good enough. We had moments, but with and without the ball things aren't clicking, we're not finding the right tempo,' said Kane, who opened the scoring with his 73rd international goal. 'We've lost that aggressive nature that we had.' Former Chelsea, Bayern Munich and Paris Saint-Germain boss Tuchel was hired with the task of taking England one step further to major tournament glory after losing in the last two European Champion-ship finals. Kane believes his side is going through a transition period since Gareth Southgate's departure after Euro 2024, but said there is little time to get things right with the World Cup now just a year away. 'We're not going to panic but we know we need to be better,' added the Bayern Munich striker. 'New ideas, there's new players coming into the team that don't have experience at international level. It's a mixture of things but no excuses.
