Zhou Guanyu joins Ferrari as a reserve driver for 2025 F1 season
MARANELLO, Italy (AP) — The first Chinese driver in Formula 1, Zhou Guanyu, is heading back to Ferrari as one of its reserve drivers for the 2025 season.
Zhou doesn't have a race seat for 2025 after leaving Sauber at the end of last year but could step in if Charles Leclerc or Lewis Hamilton can't race.
The 25-year-old Zhou first raced in F1 in 2022 for what was then the Alfa Romeo team, before it reverted back to the Sauber name. He has a best finish of eighth and has strong commercial and sponsorship backing in China. He was a Ferrari academy driver earlier in his career.
'It's a great honor to be one of the reserve drivers that can help really develop the team,' Zhou said. 'It's amazing to be coming back home to where it all started.'
Zhou is one of two reserves for Ferrari alongside another ex-Sauber driver, Antonio Giovinazzi, who last raced in F1 in 2021 and is a long-time reserve who has yet to drive for the team.
When Ferrari's Carlos Sainz Jr. was unable to race because of appendicitis at the Saudi Arabian Grand Prix last year, the team opted instead to promote then-Formula 2 driver Oliver Bearman.
A strong seventh-place finish at an unfamiliar circuit helped Bearman build momentum and secure a full-time F1 drive for 2025 with Haas.

Ohtani reached base four times and scored three runs in his first four at-bats, drawing two walks to go with his two homers. Ohtani hadn't played in 10 straight games without hitting a homer since 2023 in the final 10 games of his six-year tenure with the Los Angeles Angels. Mexico overcomes slow start to defeat Dominican Republic 3-2 in Gold Cup group stage
INGLEWOOD, Calif. (AP) — Defending champion Mexico overcame a slow start to defeat the Dominican Republic 3-2 on Saturday night in a CONCACAF Gold Cup group stage match. West Ham midfielder Edson Álvarez opened the scoring in the 44th minute, Fulham striker Raúl Jiménez added a goal in the 47th and defender César Montes got another one in the 53rd. Jiménez now has 40 goals with the Mexican national team and is six away from Jared Borgetti, in second place on the career scoring list for El Tri. Javier Hernández is Mexico's top scorer with 52. 'It was a good win to start with. I congratulate my team, who maintained their emotional balance. It was a hard-fought, but fair victory," said Mexico coach Javier Aguirre. 'Our rival did a lot of merit, they demanded us, they did a good job.' Mexico leads Group A with three points while the Dominican Republic is at the bottom. Costa Rica and Suriname, the other countries in the group, will face off on Sunday in Snapdragon stadium in San Diego. 'We were patient, we scored three goals and it was an attractive match for the fans, although there are things that need to be corrected,' Aguirre added. Peter González in the 51st minute and Edison Ascona in the 67th scored for the Dominicans, who earned their first qualification as one of the four group winners in League B of the CONCACAF Nations League. The match was played at SoFi stadium before 54,309 fans, most of them rooting for Mexico. There was uncertainty on how many Mexican fans would attend the match. On Friday, Mexico's President Claudia Sheinbaum urged U.S. officials not to target individuals attending the game. Dozens of workers have been detained by federal immigration authorities in a series of raids in LA's fashion district and at Home Depot parking lots in Southern California. More than 100 people have been detained. Mexico will try to qualify for the next round next Wednesday when they play Suriname while the Dominican Republic will play Costa Rica. Oilers come out flat again, lose Game 5 of Stanley Cup Final to the Panthers
EDMONTON, Alberta (AP) — Again the Edmonton Oilers came out flat against the Florida Panthers in the Stanley Cup Final, and the result has them on the brink of losing to them for a second year in a row. The Oilers gave up the first two goals early, eventually fell behind by three and lost Game 5 on home ice Saturday night 5-2. They've been outscored 11-4 in the first period during the final. 'Well if I knew, I'd address it,' said defenseman Mattias Ekholm, who was burned on Brad Marchand's opening goal nine minutes in. 'They're a good team over there. We're a good team. We just have to make sure we bear down early on in games. It hasn't happened for us, and obviously we need to go down to Florida and win a game.' Game 6 is Tuesday night in Sunrise. The Oilers went into Game 5 favored to take the lead and win the series, but they instead got outskated and outplayed by the defending champs. Coach Kris Knoblauch didn't hate his team's start, just what followed. 'I thought we got off to a great start,' Knoblauch said. 'We won a faceoff and it led to a goal against. It's tough tonight. Like two of the goals against, we won the draws and they go down and score immediately. That's tough. Even with the penalty kill keeping Florida off the board, not capitalizing on those chances proved costly. 'We had some looks, for sure, but maybe find a way to generate some second, third looks quickly,' Nugent-Hopkins said. 'We'll stay confident, stay positive, take a look and see if we can correct anything.'
