I Went to Ford's Towing Bootcamp and Learned to Tow Like a Pro
I can drive a truck, and I love their capabilities, but towing? I have never had to back up a truck and attach it to a trailer hitch—that's a different challenge. But I like to be independent and learn new things, so when I heard that Ford was offering a Towing Bootcamp, a class that anyone can take, I signed right up.
Our family has dreams of taking road trips to the national parks and scenic destinations around the country and hauling an RV so we can stay in the wild. But it can seem daunting to back up a truck and align perfectly to a hitch I cannot see. There is a lot of new tech in Ford's F-Series and Super Duty trucks designed to help with that, but still, it's a skill.
And, there's a lot to learn. Our colleague Annika Carter is a pro at towing and shared this post about it, so I had a head start. But actually getting out there and learning to tow? That is where the skill truly starts to build.

This is something everyone should understand, even if your'e not towing. We are taught to ask, how much can this truck tow? But what is a payload capacity impacts tow capacity, so you have to know that number too.
Payload capacity is what your truck can hold in the cabin and the truck bed. If the payload capacity is what the actual truck can carry, then the towing capacity is how much weight your truck can safely tow behind it.
If you're freshening up the yard and need to load mulch into your truck bed, then the payload would be the amount of mulch that you can bring home without a trailer. But if you need pallets of sod and require a trailer to haul it, then you'll want to pay attention to the towing capacity. As Annika says in her post, both these numbers need to come in under the gross vehicle weight rating, so you have to do a little math when figuring out how much you can really tow.

With the F-Series and Super Duty trucks, the payload and towing capacity varies based on model and trim levels, but no matter what, capacity is capacity, right? Ford, trying to simplify things for its owners, developed both Smart Hitch to make it easier to connect the hitch to the trailer, and onboard scales to ensure the payload and/or towing capacity fall within the weight limit. Then, you can adjust and lower the hitch into place so the truck and trailer to sit evenly and will seamlessly respond to braking.
Smart Hitch camera views are clear and easy to see right on the touch screen even for towing newbies.

With all the tech assistance, it seems pretty easy to hitch up your trailer. And then you have to actually back up the truck.
First, we had to select which type of trailer we had and get it set up with the right Smart Hitch selection. The visual guides made it easy to understand which trailer looks like the one you have behind your truck: conventional, weight distance hitch, gooseneck, or fifth wheel.
Then our Towing Bootcamp instructor coached us to use the Pro Trailer Hitch Assist dial on the dashboard. Press and hold the button and the truck's tech takes over. The truck will do the hard work from steering and accelerating, and even braking, as you approach the hitch. The camera view is the cherry on top for me; I felt in control and had clarity to see the trailer align with the hitch.

The Smart Hitch this tech replaces the old-school way of hitching a trailer: using mirrors, frequently climbing out of the truck to check the alignment, or having a spotter waiving and yelling at you.
Taking the guesswork out also lets you learn the right steps from the beginning and avoid the potential for accidentally approaching too high or too low, and hoping that you're backing up straight. No one wants to start off a trip with a dent in the back of the truck and a cold, quiet first few hundred miles of driving with your spotter in the passenger's seat.
Under Features and Towing on the multimedia screen there is a connection checklist you'll want to go through before driving off. Select your trailer and the checklist knows which question to ask next for our specific trailer type.
After I backed up our conventional trailer and aligned with the hitch, I had to ensure the lock ball coupler was properly connected. The system prompted us to confirm this. Then it prompted me to check that all electrical connections are made so when I hit the brakes, the trailer brake lamps will light up.
Another important safety step is to cross and connect the safety chains on your truck. In case the trailer detaches from the ball coupler, the safety chains will still be attached to your truck and not let it recklessly flail behind you in traffic. You'll also need to connect the emergency breakaway switch, so in the event if your trailer detaches unexpectedly, the brakes will then engage on the trailer.
Other functions the system prompted me to check were the lamp functions using the Trailer Light Check feature. Once you press it, it cycles through every signal, brake light, marking light and reverse lamps, so you can physically walk around the truck to see that they are all working.
Walking around the truck and trailer you'll see them flash on and off for five minutes. Once you confirm all connections are made, also double check that your tongue or level jacks are all the way up and not planted in the ground when you try to drive off.
Our instructors also advised us to always check under the trailer to make sure your kids, pets, and anyone else is not hiding under there before you move your trailer. If all is clear, check your tires for nails, pressure, gashes, and take a look at your lug nuts on your wheels to ensure they are secure, and look for any cracks in the rims.
If everything looks great there, remove the safety wheel chocks, or wedges that secure your wheels from rolling, and take them with you.
The next item on the checklist is the driver safety check: Adjust the mirrors so you can see as you normally would before driving and set up your towing display: you can see that the lights are connected, the current gain setting, tire information, and overall towing status.
It's great to have access to this from the driver's seat, especially if you're on a hill. Leaving this up on the screen allows you to keep an eye on everything as you drive.
Next, we adjusted the gain setting; this allows for your truck and trailer to stop at the same time. You don't want the trailer forcing your trailer forward or the truck to stop first. For a heavier trailer such as a large boat, a higher gain is preferable. With a lighter trailer like a small camper or Jetski trailer, say up to 3,500 lbs., a lower gain is preferable.
To get the gain right, you can test it in the parking lot before you head out and get a feel with the brakes. Listening to your truck and trailer, you can hear if the gain is even; it will make a thud noise if the trailer is surging forward. The right gain setting allows your towing to feel seamless and not feel like the truck or trailer are pulling in either direction.
Ford certainly made it easy to add towing to your skillset; all Ford's trucks offer Pro Trailer Hitch Assist, Onboard Scales, and Smart Hitch features. But knowing what you plan to haul and what you plan to tow is how to decide how much capability you'll need. The F-150 pickup, for instance, is great for smaller things: A small boat, small trailer or lightweight equipment.
Those who need to tow heavier things, such as a full-size RV or a work trailer, might do better with the Ford F-250 or F-350 Super Duty trucks. Keep in mind that trims, such as King Ranch or Tremor, are generally not impactful when it comes to towing; they are all about comfort and conveniences.
And once you decide, keep in mind the payload part of the equation. Filling the truck bed with storage boxes and cargo subtracts from the amount you can tow. Or maybe, I'll just have to upgrade to the larger truck so I can fill the bed, and the trailer, with my destination dreams.

Hagens Berman: Ford Hit with New Lawsuit Following Fatal F-350 Rollover Crash and Roof Crush Defect
PUEBLO, Colo.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Automaker Ford is in the crosshairs of a new lawsuit following the fatal crash of a Colorado father who attorneys say experienced a cabin roof crush defect present in millions of 1999–2016 Ford trucks and leading to fatal rollovers, according to personal injury attorneys at Hagens Berman and Brooks Law Firm. "In the years of development leading to the release of the Super Duty, Ford weakened almost every component of the roof structure to save money,' the lawsuit states. The lawsuit was filed June 12, 2025, in the U.S. District Court for the Western District of Oklahoma on behalf of Jamie Horn, the surviving widow of Steven Horn, and accuses the automaker of negligence and wrongful death regarding a roof crush defect in Ford Super Duty pickup trucks. Attorneys at Hagens Berman and Brooks Law Firm say Ford knew about this defect which was allegedly responsible for the tragic death of Mr. Horn, a husband and father of two, in a rollover accident in March 2025 on an Oklahoma highway. 'But when the Horns bought their Super Duty, Ford already knew that Super Duty roofs were collapsing in rollover accidents,' the lawsuit states. 'Ford knew, and it had been hiding this defect from consumers for years.'' 'As stated in our lawsuit, Mr. Horn is dead because Ford wanted to save a few dollars per truck,' said Jacob Berman, the attorney leading the case. 'We intend to hold Ford accountable under the full extent of the law for what we believe is blatant negligence that led to his wrongful death and robbed this family of a father and husband.' Design Defect Makes Frightening Rollover Fatal On March 4, 2025, Horn, whose family and estate are represented by personal injury attorneys at Hagens Berman, was traveling with his family from their home in Pueblo, Colorado to visit his father in Seminole on rural Oklahoma highway US-412. The Horns' 2012 Super Duty F-350 and the trailer it was pulling were hit by a gust of wind. Mr. Horn slowed down because of the wind, but the gust caused both the trailer and the truck to roll at least one and a half times, coming to rest on the roof. The F-350's roof collapsed on the driver's side, and Oklahoma Highway Patrol who responded pronounced Mr. Horn dead at the scene. 'In a properly designed truck, this would have been frightening, but not deadly,' the lawsuit states. 'But the driver's-side roof of the Horns' F-350 collapsed during the rollover, crushing Mr. Horn and killing him.' Horn's wife and daughter who were seated on the passenger side of the F-350 were able to crawl out of the vehicle, according to the lawsuit, 'evidence that when the roof doesn't crush, people can survive rollovers without catastrophic injuries.' The Smoking Gun – Ford's Internal Testing & Safety Evaluations According to the lawsuit, Ford's Super Duty roofs were routinely crushed in rollovers, but Ford chose not to warn consumers. 'Mr. Horn's fatal injuries are the direct result of a roof design that Ford knew was extraordinarily weak,' the lawsuit states. Ford's internal testing and safety evaluations show that prior to the development of the 1999–2016 Ford Super Duty, Ford knew rollovers were far more dangerous to vehicle occupants than other types of crashes, the lawsuit states. These documents also show that Ford knew strong vehicle roofs were fundamental to minimizing serious injury in a rollover, according to the lawsuit. 'Despite this knowledge, Ford repeatedly weakened the roof structure on Super Duty trucks to save money on labor and tooling costs. In the years of development leading to the release of the Super Duty, Ford weakened almost every component of the roof structure to save money,' the lawsuit states. 'It never performed any physical testing of the Super Duties' roof strength, and it conveniently lost records of the computerized testing it claims it did perform.' 'Ford knew Super Duty roofs were weak before the first truck rolled off the assembly line,' Berman said. 'Instead of doing what was right and making changes to its patently unsafe designs, Ford doubled down, continuing to sell the same defective design until 2016, all the while entering into secret settlements with victims and their families to try to hide the deadly nature of its cabin roof design.' According to the lawsuit, Ford still hasn't taken any steps to warn the public about the risk posed by roof collapse in 1999–2016 Super Duty trucks. Hagens Berman represents the families of two other individuals who lost their lives due to the roof crush defect present in millions of Super Duty pickup trucks. Chevy Corvette Looking To Steal Mustang GTD Nurburgring Record: Report
The latest car news, reviews, and features. General Motors might be looking to make history, or, it's just wrapping up development on the C8 Chevrolet Corvette Zora. Maybe both? A team of General Motors engineers descended upon the Nürburgring this week. With them came variants of the C8 Corvette, and none of the cars are camouflaged. Locals might not have thought much of the yellow C8 bearing a Z06 badge or purple C8 sporting a ZR1 badge, both cars are already on sale. But keen-eyed enthusiasts will smell what's up. The purple C8 sporting the Z06 badge has ZR1 air intakes and design elements. That's where the intrigue starts, not ends. Both cars have a yellow sticker placed at the top left of the rear glass above the engine compartment. The yellow sticker indicates a hybrid system onboard. Neither the ZR1 nor the Z06 have a hybrid powertrain. The radiators in the front air intakes of the purple prototype can clearly be seen, and the positioning of these intakes are slightly different from other C8s. The reason for this change is the vertical radiators are for cooling the front electric drive unit while the horizontal radiators cool the V8. The Drive heard GM's crew will be in Europe for a total of three weeks (presumably some might get the opportunity to spend the weekend at Le Mans watching Cadillac continue to make history), which is quite a bit of time at the 'Ring. With a gaggle of C8 Corvette variants on hand and a generous amount of time at the 'Ring, it's conceivable this is more than buttoning up the Zora: GM might try and take the record for the fastest American production car around the Nürburgring. With various C8 Corvette models on hand, it's possible Chevy makes the attempt with the Zora or the ZR1. The Drive reached out to Chevrolet with questions, but hadn't heard back at the time of publishing. Ford currently holds that record. In December, the Blue Oval announced the Ford Mustang GTD took the record from the Dodge Viper ACR with a lap of 6:57.685. Notably, that meant the Mustang GTD was quicker around the 'Ring than the Porsche 911 GT3. Unsatisfied with the win Ford went back to the 'Ring for another attempt, and beat itself. In May, Ford said the Mustang GTD beat its own lap record by 5.5 seconds for a 'Ring time of 6:52.072. The new lap time means the Mustang GTD is also quicker around the 'Ring than the Mercedes-AMG GT Black Series. In 2020, the C8 Chevy Corvette Stingray set a 'Ring time of 7:28.30. That car was equipped with the Z51 Performance Package. As a historical reference point, the C7 Chevy Corvette ZR1 never set an official 'Ring lap time. The car was said to have lapped the 'Ring in an unofficial and disappointing 7:04. The underwhelming lap time was blamed on cold tires, and GM never confirmed the time. The new Corvette Zora will pair the Corvette E-Ray's electric front motor to the Corvette ZR1's twin-turbo flat-plane crank V-8. Output is expected to check in at over 1,200 horsepower. The Ford Mustang GTD weighs in at 4,343 pounds with 815 horsepower. Chevy hasn't revealed the Corvette Zora yet, if that's even its official name, but the ZR1 weighs 3,670 pounds, and the E-Ray weighs 3,774 pounds. There's almost no world the Zora weighs anything close to the Mustang GTD, and is expected to have nearly 32% more power on tap. We might see a new American king of the Nürburgring in short order if GM goes for it.

Why V8 Truck Sales Are Crashing Across the U.S. originally appeared on Autoblog. Besides muscle cars, the V8 engine is perhaps most closely associated with large pickup trucks. Their effortless torque and reputation for durability make them ideal power plants for pickups, but the latest data indicates a sharp decline in V8 truck sales in America over the last four or so years. The decline can be partly attributed to several V8-powered pickups being discontinued, even though manufacturers like Ram have brought back V8 trucks. Besides that, many Americans are choosing smaller, more efficient vehicles across multiple segments. Still, the numbers are quite telling, so let's take a closer look. In 2020, 64.6% of all half-ton truck registrations in the United States were for V8 models. In 2024, V8 half-ton trucks made up just 38% of all half-ton pickup registrations. That's according to data obtained by The Drive via Stephanie Brinley, S&P Global Mobility's principal automotive analyst. Unsurprisingly, the decline of V8 full-size trucks coincides with an increase in sales of six-cylinder full-size pickups, which improved from 32.8% to 47.6% over the same period. It's not only six-cylinder trucks that are thriving; four-cylinder half-ton trucks from General Motors made up 11.5% of registrations last year. 'Reasons for the change include that the V6 and four-cylinder options are far stronger than they used to be,' said Brinley. 'The Ram 1500 provides a case in point as its Hurricane six-cylinder engines are more efficient and more powerful than the 5.7-liter V8.' 'Still, many full-size pickup truck buyers do believe a V8 is the best solution for their truck, and at 38% of registrations in 2024, that amounted to about 530,000 V8-equipped trucks registered in 2024,' Brinley continued. 'Offering multiple engine solutions remains important for the segment, as long as the engines can cost-effectively be made to be compliant with regulations. Over time, the V8 take rate is likely to continue to slow.' The numbers aren't shocking when one considers the increasing lack of V8-powered half-ton pickups. The option disappeared entirely from the 2025 Ram 1500, in favor of the brand's new Hurricane inline-six turbo engine. Customers were displeased, and Ram has now reintroduced the V8 Hemi option for 2026. Toyota no longer has a V8 Tundra at all, having switched to V6 or V6 hybrid power exclusively. Ford still offers a V8 for the F-150, but it feels like a nostalgic choice at this point, since the mill is outclassed by the more powerful and efficient EcoBoost V6. Over at GM, the Silverado 1500 has two V8s, but the brand's four-cylinder accounts for a healthy 36% of total sales for that pickup, not far behind the smaller of the V8s. Up until Ram's bold move to bring back the V8, it seemed like the legendary engine was on its way out. The numbers say that much, but there remains a healthy percentage of buyers who do still want a V8 pickup. Based on Ram's latest move, we'd bet that Ford, Chevy, and others would be wary of dropping their V8s right now. Still, there's no doubt that six-cylinder trucks are taking over in a big way in the full-size segment, and who knows what the numbers will say another four years from now.
