Maps show Canada wildfire smoke forecast for U.S. as dozens of blazes burn out of control
Wildfire smoke from Canada is expected to move over the U.S., impacting air quality for millions of people on Friday and this weekend. Maps and satellite imagery show the large-scale impact of the blazes.
More than 90 fires out of 174 active blazes were burning "out of control" across Canada as of Thursday, according to the Canadian Interagency Forest Fire Center, forcing thousands of people to flee their homes.
A state of emergency was declared in the province of Saskatchewan where over a dozen fires are raging. Earlier this week, 17,000 people were told to flee blazes in Manitoba, a neighboring province that borders North Dakota and Minnesota.
Satellite imagery from Thursday showed a massive smoke plume spanning 3,000 miles from Montana to the Atlantic.

Air quality alerts are covering parts of the Upper Midwest, including areas in Michigan's Upper Peninsula and northern Minnesota, as well as all of Wisconsin, The Weather Channel reports.
Air quality is expected to be "unhealthy for sensitive groups" on Friday in cities spanning from Madison, Wisconsin, to Duluth, Minnesota, according to the federal site AirNow. Air quality is forecast to be "moderate" in cities including Chicago, Minneapolis, St. Louis, Cincinnati and Detroit.
On Saturday, air quality is expected to worsen in parts of Minnesota, where it is forecast to be "unhealthy," AirNow said.
Maps show how thick the smoke is expected to be in the U.S. on Friday and Saturday.

EAST PROVIDENCE, R.I. (WPRI) — For the second straight year, the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) has predicted we'll see an above-normal Atlantic hurricane season. The season runs from June 1 to Nov. 30. Last year, we had 18 named storms, some of which caused significant inland flooding. The current outlook for 2025 calls for 13 to 19 named storms in the Atlantic basin, with 6 to 10 of those becoming hurricanes and three to five being major hurricanes. Albazi made his UFC debut as a short-notice replacement in a bantamweight scrap against Malcolm Gordon in July 2020. Albazi won that matchup via submission. He then dropped to flyweight for his next outing, a January 2021 decision win over Zhalgas Zhumagulov. Wins over Francisco Figueiredo, Alessandro Costa, and Kai Kara-France followed, which earned him a February booking opposite former UFC flyweight champ Brandon Moreno. Taira opened his UFC career with a unanimous decision win over Carlos Candelario in May 2022. He followed that with back-to-back submission wins in contests where he earned 'Performance of the Night' bonuses, defeating C.J. Vergara and Jesús Santos Aguilar. Wins over Edgar Chairez and Carlos Hernandez in 2023 followed. In June, Taira got the first true test of his UFC career when he faced Alex Perez in a main event on a UFC Fight Night card at the Apex. At the time, Taira was the No. 13 ranked fighter in the UFC's flyweight division, and Perez, who had fought Deiveson Figueiredo for the UFC 125-pound title in 2020, was ranked No. 5. Taira won that bout via TKO due to a knee injury. The fight ended when Taira took the back of his opponent in the center of the Octagon and forced him to the mat, putting enormous pressure on Perez's knee and causing an injury that brought the fight to a halt in the second stanza. From all appearances, and judging from his comments after the victory, the move that finished the contest was a designed technique. In October, the 25-year-old Taira faced former UFC flyweight title challenger Brandon Royval in the main event of a UFC Fight Night at the Apex in Las Vegas. The fight was a close one, but Royval earned the split decision win, handing Taira the first loss of his MMA career. Taira is the No. 5 ranked UFC flyweight. Hazy Skies Continue as Heat and Humidity Build Across Maryland
Canadian wildfire smoke will keep skies hazy overnight across Maryland, with temperatures falling into the 50s and 60s. While the smoke will be visible, most of it will remain at high altitudes and have little impact on air quality at the surface. Wednesday will bring more sunshine and continued haze as the upper-level smoke persists. Temperatures will soar into the upper 80s to near 90 degrees. Some locations may hit the 90-degree mark for the first time this year. The heat continues Thursday, but cloud cover will increase, and humidity will become more noticeable. Highs will again push into the upper 80s, with a muggy feel returning to the atmosphere. Friday will feature a mix of sun and clouds, with a few isolated storms possible across western Maryland late in the day. Baltimore and the I-95 corridor are expected to stay dry. Afternoon highs will reach the mid to upper 80s. The best chance for widespread rain arrives Saturday as a cold front pushes into the region. Expect scattered showers and a few storms, with highs cooling slightly into the upper 70s to low 80s. The front will move out of the area by early Sunday, setting the stage for a beautiful end to the weekend. Sunshine returns Sunday afternoon with lower humidity and highs in the low 80s. Looking ahead, the weather turns unsettled again next week. Showers and thunderstorms are possible Monday and Tuesday, with highs near 80 degrees each day.
