Mere filing of FIR in financial fraud cases not sufficient: HC

Madurai: Mere registration of an FIR in
financial fraud
cases would not serve any purpose since the object of the Tamil Nadu Protection of Interests of Depositors (TNPID) Act, 1997, is to ensure that the victims got back their money, Madras high court has observed.
The court was hearing the petition filed by Muthukumaran seeking a direction to the
Economic Offences Wing
(EOW) to attach the properties belonging to the Neomax company, which was involved in a financial fraud by collecting money from various people.
Justice B Pugalendhi observed that the TNPID Act was enacted to regulate financial establishments that were exploiting depositors by promising high returns and subsequently defaulting on repayments, leading to widespread public distress.
The judge observed that officials of the EOW are under the impression that they are supposed to act/prosecute only after a case is reported. They have to understand that they are also liable to prevent such offences. If any company is offering interest above the rate of interest prescribed by the Reserve Bank of India, it is the duty of the EOW to ascertain from the company whether they have any registration or authority to collect the deposits and whether they have the means to give such higher returns.

Neither the govt nor the police are viewing this aspect, and people like the petitioners are lured by such companies.
The judge observed that data, which is available as provided by the EOW, discloses that not even 10% of the amount has been disbursed to the victims. The govt has a moral responsibility to ensure that the victims got back their money. Hence, the judge directed the EOW to look into the allegations by the petitioner and take appropriate action.
This apart, S Srisarankumar, who is the treasurer of the Theni District Neomax Investors' Protection Association, moved court seeking a direction to cancel the bail granted to the accused in the
Neomax financial fraud case
.
However, justice Pugalendhi observed that on mere apprehension alone, the court is not inclined to entertain the petition, the judge observed and dismissed the petition.

Was Sonam Raghuvanshi's sudden request to visit Kamakhya Temple a setup? How live location to lover helped killers track Raja
A newlywed honeymoon in the Northeast took a shocking turn when a woman named Sonam allegedly plotted her husband Raja Raghuvanshi's murder, just days after their wedding. According to investigators, she stayed in contact with her alleged boyfriend, Raj Kushwaha, the entire time, even sharing her live location during the trip. Police claim Sonam worked with Raj and three others, all young men with no criminal history, to track and kill her husband in Meghalaya's Sohra region. One major clue was Sonam's sudden request to visit the Kamakhya temple in Assam, which helped the killers close in on their location. Raja, a 28-year-old transporter from Indore, was found dead in a deep gorge on June 2, less than 11 days after his wedding. His wife was found alone and disoriented at a highway dhaba in Uttar Pradesh nearly 1,200 km from the crime scene. She reportedly called her brother using the eatery owner's phone, triggering a police alert. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like New Container Houses Indonesia (Prices May Surprise You) Container House | Search ads Search Now Undo Sonam, 24, allegedly planned the murder with Raj Kushwaha, 21, who worked in her father's business. The other accused are Akash Rajput (21), Vishal Singh Chauhan (22), and Anand Kurmi (23). All are now in custody. 'She looked terrified and wasn't even speaking properly,' said a woman who met her at the dhaba. Sonam later surrendered to UP Police and is being taken to Shillong for further questioning. Live Events Meghalaya DGP I Nongrang confirmed the arrests, while CM Conrad Sangma praised police for solving the case in a week. Officials believe the motive was a love affair turned deadly. Raja's mother Uma Raghuvanshi is shattered. 'He told me Sonam hardly spoke to him. I didn't know she was hiding something so dark,' she said. The family said Sonam stayed with them for four days after marriage, before going to her parents' house. Then suddenly, Raja informed them she had planned a temple trip. 'He bought clothes and packed for the trip. She made him wear his best jewellery, a chain, a ring, a watch, and left as a bride,' Uma said. 'And now she stands accused of killing him.' The heartbroken mother added, 'If she didn't want to marry him, she could have left. Why murder him? He loved her truly. We treated her like our own daughter.' The family is demanding the harshest punishment. 'If proven guilty, she and the others must be hanged. She didn't just kill our son, she broke our trust, and the meaning of family,' Uma said, her voice heavy with pain. Inputs from TOI

Frederick Forsyth net worth: How the former war correspondent turned conflict stories into a million-dollar legacy
As strange as it sounds, Frederick Forsyth never thought of writing as his calling. As he admitted himself, he wasn't much interested in writing novels and considered it the 'most no-hope-in-hell way of making some money' while he was "skint, stony broke. " So he sat down with his typewriter and 'wrote night and day for 35 days' and thus was born the bestselling masterpiece, The Day of the Jackal. Little did he know back then that he was only getting started with what later shaped up to become one of the most financially robust and impactful literary journeys. While exact figures vary, the acclaimed British novelist crafted a legacy through his gripping thrillers and compelling storytelling, and his estimated net worth sat at approximately $70 million. This wealth is a testament to his prolific writing career, successful adaptations, and sensible financial decisions. Here is a detailed breakdown. Literary success and earnings Forsyth's journey into the literary world began with his debut novel, The Day of the Jackal, published in 1971. The book's success catapulted him into the literary spotlight, leading to a series of bestsellers, including The Odessa File, The Fourth Protocol, and The Dogs of War. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like 5 Books Warren Buffett Wants You to Read In 2025 Blinkist: Warren Buffett's Reading List Undo By 2006, Forsyth had sold over 70 million copies of his books worldwide, translated into more than 30 languages. Typically, authors earn royalties ranging from 10% to 15% of a book's sale price (as per several publishers). Given Forsyth's extensive sales, his earnings from book royalties alone have been substantial. Additionally, his works have been adapted into numerous films and television series, further amplifying his income through adaptation rights and royalties. Film and television adaptations Forsyth's novels have been successfully adapted into films, enhancing his financial portfolio. Notable adaptations include: The Day of the Jackal (1973) The Odessa File (1974) The Dogs of War (1980) The Fourth Protocol (1987) The Jackal (1997), a reimagining of his earlier work The Shepherd (2023), based on his short story These adaptations have not only brought his stories to a broader audience but have also contributed to his financial success through licensing deals and royalties. Financial setbacks Despite his financial successes, Forsyth faced multiple challenges in life. In a 2009 interview with The Telegraph, he revealed that he lost £2.2 million in a share fraud. However, he emphasized that he had learned from the experience and remained financially secure, attributing his resilience to his upbringing and work ethic. Lifestyle and personal finances Thanks to his experience with financial setbacks more than once in his life, Forsyth's financial prudence was reflected in his lifestyle choices. He expressed a preference for a modest lifestyle, avoiding ostentatious displays of wealth. In a 2009 interview, he mentioned that he doesn't own a private yacht or jet, underscoring his focus on financial stability over luxury.
