‘Extreme' marine heatwave recorded in waters off Irish coast

Sea temperatures off the western and southern coasts of Ireland are above normal and constitute a marine heatwave, climatologists have said.
UK Met Office data placed the marine heatwave at the 'extreme' end of the spectrum, with sea surface temperatures up to 4 degrees above normal.
'Yes, it is a marine heatwave currently,' said Paul Moore, a climatologist at Met Éireann.
'This background warming is always there, but when atmospheric conditions are favourable, as they have been in our region during spring, this can enhance the warming in localised areas, leading to marine heatwaves.'

Data showing above average temperatures has been confirmed from a number of sources, including figures gathered by Europe's Copernicus earth-monitoring satellite, and the Irish Marine Data Buoy Observation Network.
This spring was dominated by high-pressure weather conditions, mostly just to the north of Ireland and Britain, said Mr Moore. This has resulted in above average sunshine, he said, and below average winds, generally coming from an easterly direction.
'This has led to the top layer of seas around us warming up at an increased rate, leading to the sea surface temperatures we are seeing now.'
The last time Ireland had sea surface temperatures this high was in June 2023.
'This followed a very dry and sunny period during the second half of May and early June that year. Research has linked the marine heatwave then to the record warm June in both Ireland and the UK.'
The reason the west and south coasts had been most affected, said Mr Moore, was because of the mostly easterly winds those areas experienced during May. These easterlies carry warmer air off the land, and this warms the sea faster.
Marine heatwaves have had 'devastating consequences' in other parts of the world, said Moore, over the last few years.

'They can potentially cause widespread bleaching of coral reefs, the proliferation of harmful algal blooms, the displacement of marine species, and the disruption of entire food chains.'
Commenting on the data for Britain and Ireland, Dr Manuela Truebano, from the school of biological and marine sciences at the University of Plymouth, said: 'This is unprecedented because it is happening so early in the year.' The June 2023 marine heatwave caused shock at the time. Of added concern, she said, was the 'prevalence and intensity of these marine heatwave events'.
Mr Moore said Ireland had been 'lucky' with the timing of recent marine heatwaves around its shores because they have occurred before August, which is normally the warmest time of the year for sea surface temperatures here.
If the sea surface temperatures were to continue to be above normal into August, that would put our marine ecosystem under stress, he said.
There are signs that the marine heatwave could end soon, he added.
'The weather pattern is due to change over the next few days, bringing back strong westerly winds, which should churn up the water, mixing colder deep water with the warmer surface water.
'This should ease the sea surface temperature increase, at least temporarily.'
As climate change continues, the global average sea surface temperatures will continue to increase, and this is projected to increase at least up to 2100.

The influence of heatwaves fuelled by climate change and cold snaps on the spread of diseases is likely to have been underestimated using current prediction methods, Irish scientists have found. Researchers at Trinity College Dublin have shown differences in heatwaves – such as how much hotter they are than normal temperatures and how long they last – 'can increase or decrease disease burden by up to 13 times, when it comes to parasites infecting humans'. Their discovery coincides with climate change and related extreme weather events impacting across the planet and predicted to get worse. 'Given the increased frequency and intensity of heatwaves in particular, it's crucial to understand how these events will affect the spread of disease,' said postgraduate researcher at TCD School of Natural Sciences, Niamh McCartan, lead author of a study published in PLOS Climate on Wednesday. READ MORE [ Commitment to climate action hard to find in Government Opens in new window ] While scientists have a relatively good idea of how temperature impacts some viruses and disease-causing pathogens and parasites, they know much less about the effects of sudden heatwaves or cold snaps, or how influential variation in duration of these events are, she said. 'Climate change is also causing mosquito species that carry diseases like dengue, Zika, and malaria to be increasingly found in parts of southern and central Europe, including Italy and France, areas that were previously too cool to support them,' she said . 'While Ireland has so far been less affected, the findings of our study highlight the urgent need to understand how warming and extreme weather events can alter disease dynamics more broadly.' They worked with the water flea and a tiny 'microsporidian pathogen' that are used widely to predict environmentally transmitted diseases. 'This approach gave us 64 unique heatwaves for comparison.' A recently published study reported '58 per cent of human pathogenic diseases have been aggravated by climate change, with temperature changes impacting host susceptibility due to altering biological properties such as how our immune systems function, as well as our behaviour', Ms McCartan said. Overly simplified models 'may miss critical complexities', she said. 'Future disease-specific models must account for fluctuating and extreme temperatures, not just averages.' Other research has suggested almost 70 per cent of Covid-19 cases in the summer of 2022 could have been avoided if there had not been heatwaves around that time. 'Imagine the difference that a better understanding of how heatwaves alter disease dynamics could have made to countless people,' she said.

A Cork father whose home was destroyed by flooding said the constant threat of rising rainfall was negatively impacting his mental health. Alan Mahy is now constantly monitoring the weather forecasts and wants Met Éireann to issue flood warnings as well as wind and rain warnings in forecasts. His call comes after the release of the first ever national climate change risk assessment by the Environmental Protection Agency, which says the country is facing "immediate critical risks from extreme weather events" In recent months, the father of four girls had to erect flood gates outside his home while celebrations were ongoing inside for his daughter's seventh birthday. When Alan and his wife Orla moved to a detached home in Midleton in December 2021, they thought they had found their dream home, until Storm Babet hit in October 2023. "I've become an unwilling amateur expert now at reading the river and river gauges," he said. Before Babet, "I was on holidays when my neighbour rang to say that the river level was now higher than the bridge used by 11 homes on the lane. The same bridge collapsed under the force of the flood. Water was already in our home at this point, and it was too late to do anything. Alan Mahy's house flooded during Storm Babet. "Eighteen months after the flood, if water gets to our driveway, others know to start panicking. "We are now the flood warning system for Midleton." The family home was destroyed, with the ground floor under more than 3ft of water, and the house was under-insured for what they lost. The kids' toys, floors, kitchen units, sofas, everything you can imagine was destroyed and we had to rent somewhere to live for almost four months while repairs were being carried out. Early interim flood measures have been put in place by the local authorities, but Mr Mahy believes it could take up to a decade to fully implement the Midleton Flood Relief Scheme. "About 1,600 tonnes of gravel and stones that were raising the river levels were removed by the local council outside our home and we are very grateful for that. "In other parts of Midleton, there have been temporary flood defences put in place, in the form of large sandbags along the riverbank. "But I firmly believe there should be a flood warning system like they have in the UK and other countries. "A yellow rain alert might not seem a lot but if it is on top of days and days of rainfall, then that yellow rain alert might be all that is needed to send the river into flood and threaten my home." Mr Mahy says the constant watching of rainfall measures has affected his mental health. We are trying to put on a brave face for our daughters. Every time there is heavy rain, they are asking if the house is going to be flooded again. "It is obviously on their minds as well and during the birthday party, I took the precaution of putting up sandbags and flood gates because I was worried about the heavy rainfall after four days of rain. Alan Mahy's possessions were destroyed when his house flooded. "Unfortunately, my prediction was right, the heavy rainfall over the previous week meant the river was too high to cope with the yellow warning for rainfall. "In actual fact, the rain that fell that night wasn't too much, but it was enough to raise the river level above the river bank. The county council came to our aid with sandbags. "When the river breaks the banks and comes up the driveway, I have to move the cars to higher ground and be on alert all the time. We feel embattled in our own home. "Carlow Weather as far as I'm concerned was the only forecaster to correctly predict how bad Babet would be. A few days in advance of Babet, he was warning East Cork for risk of bad floods — he was correct and yet there were no actions taken by the authorities to prepare for the worst. "Constantly watching the forecasts and monitoring the river levels is just exhausting and it is no way for a family to live." Alan O'Reilly from Carlow Weather has been consistent in his calls for a flood alert system in the country. In his latest email to Government ministers in January he said: "We are going to see more extreme weather in the coming years, especially flooding and we still have no flood warning system or any real dedicated resources for weather event responses. "We need far more weather stations recording data, especially rainfall data in the upland areas that feed the rivers." Measures he has outlined include flood response teams, as well as groups trained to assist ESB networks with power restoration in terms of clearing roads and trees and replacing poles. He also called for military drones to be deployed after storms to map flooded areas, fallen power lines and blocked roads and feed information to local authorities, and a dedicated national weather emergency app for real-time alerts and information on power outages, emergency hubs and road closures. In a statement, Cork County Council said: "Regarding flood warnings, Cork County Council relies on Met Éireann forecasts and the National Directorate for Fire and Emergency Management (NDFEM). Locally, information received from Met Éireann and NDFEM is augmented by river gauge trends and reports from area engineers and considered by Cork County Council's Severe Weather Assessment Team. The Severe Weather Assessment Team convenes as soon as a significant risk of severe weather becomes apparent and meets regularly thereafter at least until the risk has abated. The team advises and coordinates the relevant sections within Cork County Council regarding risk and response, including press releases and social media posts to help keep citizens informed.

May proved to be much warmer, drier and brighter than normal with some weather stations recording their sunniest months since records began and average temperatures climbing significantly higher than historical norms, provisional figures from Met Éireann suggest. Temperatures across Ireland in May were the sixth highest on record with the average of 12.54 degrees exceeding the 20th century norm by almost two degrees. The data is in line with a trend of consistent May warming with the top seven highest average temperatures for the month having been recorded since 2008. Blocking high pressure, positioned mostly to the north of Ireland, dominated for the first three weeks with Atlantic low pressure breaking through in the final week. READ MORE The abundant sunshine and slack easterly airflow intensified the marine heatwave off the south and west coasts that had been building through April. May was 1.85 degrees above the 20th century average for the month and 1.21 degrees above the long-term average for the most recent climatological reference period of 1991-2020. Mean temperatures were as much as 14.2 degrees at Shannon Airport , Co Clare – its warmest May on record – while the month's highest temperature was reported at Newport, Co Mayo , on Tuesday, May 13th, which had a temperature of 24.8 degrees. Average rainfall was measured at 56mm, representing 70 per cent of the month's long-term average from 1991-2020. That ranks the month as the 23rd driest May since 1941 and the fourth consecutive year to have below the long-term average rainfall for the month. A total of 20 weather stations across the country recorded climatological dry spells – periods of 15 or more consecutive days with less than 1.0mm of rainfall – from the end of April into May. Opens in new window ] Monthly rainfall values ranged from 31 per cent at Roches Point, Co Cork , to 104 per cent at Finner, Co Donegal . Total hours of sunshine from all available locations were above the long-term average for 1991-2020, with two stations recording their highest ever monthly sunshine totals, and a couple of others their highest totals for May. Record levels of sunshine were recorded at Shannon and Cork airports with Shannon basking in 288.9 hours of sun and Cork recording 290.4 hours. Johnstown Castle in Wexford had 298.8 hours of sun while Gurteen in Co Tipperary recorded 267.2 hours – their sunniest Mays on record. Elsewhere, Valentia Observatory in Co Kerry had its sunniest May since May 1961.
