Bangsa Johor pilot schools joins Apple's global elite in digital education
JOHOR BARU: Four Bangsa Johor pilot schools have become the first daily schools in Malaysia to be recognised as Apple Distinguished Schools, placing them among a select group of just 1,000 innovative educational institutions globally.
Johor Menteri Besar Datuk Onn Hafiz Ghazi said the milestone reinforced the state's commitment to digital learning and positions the pilot schools as elite institutions on the world stage.
"There are only nine Apple Distinguished Schools in Malaysia, and until now, all of them were fully residential schools. Four of these nine are Bangsa Johor pilot schools (SRBJ)," he said.
"This makes the SRBJ schools the first and only daily schools in the country to be accorded this honour."
The schools awarded the distinction are Sekolah Menengah Kebangsaan (SMK) Tasek Utara, Sekolah Kebangsaan (SK) Tasek Utara, SMK Kota Puteri, and SK Kota Puteri 4 in Pasir Gudang. These institutions form the first cohort under the Sekolah Rintis Bangsa Johor (SRBJ) initiative.
"These schools were not selected by chance — they are part of a bold experiment," Onn Hafiz said during a town hall session at SMK Tasek Utara, attended by parents, teachers, and education officials.
"If successful, the programme will be expanded across the state."
The Apple Distinguished School designation is awarded to schools that demonstrate continuous innovation in learning, teaching, and the learning environment — a reflection of Johor's ambition to lead in educational technology.
As part of Johor's digital education transformation, 2,496 iPads have been distributed, benefiting 2,264 pupils and 213 teachers at the four SRBJ schools.
The iPad rollout is a collaborative initiative by the Johor state government and the Raja Zarith Sofiah Foundation, in strategic partnership with Apple Education, and sponsored by QSR Brands.
Onn Hafiz said the programme aligned with Johor's vision of developing a new generation of learners through the SRBJ model, which promotes blended learning, digital literacy, and 21st-century competencies.
"This recognition by Apple is a testament to the state's forward-thinking approach and the strength of public-private partnerships in education," he added.
The SRBJ initiative is personally endorsed by the Regent of Johor Tunku Ismail Sultan Ibrahim and forms part of the state's broader strategy to position Johor as a developed, digitally-advanced economy by 2030.
The programme focuses on three key pillars set by Tunku Ismail: economic empowerment, modern infrastructure, and world-class education.
As part of the initiative, RM30 million will be invested to upgrade schools with smart classrooms, AI-powered laboratories, refurbished libraries, modernised teachers' lounges, and revamped canteen facilities.
Meanwhile, the State Education and Information Committee chairman Aznan Tamin said that SRBJ students would sit for a new Primary Level School Examination (PLSE) and the International General Certificate of Secondary Education (IGCSE), which is equivalent to the Sijil Pelajaran Malaysia (SPM).
He said these changes were part of Johor's strategy to internationalise learning outcomes and ensure global recognition of the state's educational standards.

Mandarin Oriental To Take Over Desaru Coast Resort Formerly Managed By One&Only
After a brief period of uncertainty, the fate of the Desaru Coast property, formerly managed by luxury resort operator One&Only, has been answered. It was recently announced that Mandarin Oriental Hotel Group will take over the operation of the Johor resort. Previously, it was reported that One&Only had stepped down as the Desaru Coast property operator. The property owner, Desaru Peace Holdings Sdn Bhd (DPH), clarified that another operator will soon take over the management. The Desaru Coast resort is renowned for being the last masterpiece of legendary architect Kerry Hill. Yesterday (5th June 2025, Thursday), Mandarin Oriental announced that it will manage the property from this month onwards. The news was announced during a signing ceremony between Mandarin Oriental and Destination Resorts & Hotels Sdn. Bhd. Group of Companies, in an event detailing the coming phases of the Johor tourist destination. Mandarin Oriental will commence managing the property in June 2025, with a complete rebranding in January 2026. With this move, Mandarin Oriental Desaru Coast will be the first Mandarin Oriental beach resort in Southeast Asia. The property currently boasts 45 suites, each with a private swimming pool. Following the takeover, Mandarin Oriental will add 40 branded residential units available for purchase. The branded residences will provide owners access to Mandarin Oriental's legendary services and enhance the property's appeal as a year-round destination for luxury living. However, there aren't many details on this plan as it's still in the early stages. Nevertheless, Desaru Coast is optimistic about the new partnership. The Chief Minister of Johor, Dato' Onn Hafiz Ghazi, said, 'Mandarin Oriental has created and defined some of the world's most renowned properties and destinations across the world, and this, being their choice for their second property in Malaysia, is a testament to Johor's immense potential. There is no better brand to lead the reintroduction of this iconic beachfront resort property as we prepare for Visit Johor Year 2026.' Mandarin Oriental is the latest hotel operator to enter the Desaru Coast resort development, joining other names like Anantara and The Westin. At the same time, Desaru Coast is preparing for the upcoming Ombak Festival this September, which will further enrich guests' experiences. Decade-long wait ends for buyers in abandoned Johor house project

Johor menteri besar Onn Hafiz Ghazi said this project was close to his heart as it was within his own constituency of Simpang Renggam. 'I have been championing it since I first became an elected representative. 'Resolving the issue was no easy task – it required on-the-ground efforts, careful planning and close collaboration between various agencies,' he shared in a Facebook post today, Bernama reported. Onn Hafiz today handed over the home ownership certificates to the buyers of the 47 units of affordable homes, each priced from RM42,000. He hoped this achievement could serve as a stepping stone towards resolving other abandoned housing projects in Johor.

Johor records RM27.4bil FDI in Q1, fuelled by JSSEZ
KOTA TINGGI: The impact of the Johor-Singapore Special Economic Zone (JS-SEZ) is already being felt, with Johor recording RM27.4 billion in foreign direct investment (FDI) in the first quarter of this year. Johor Menteri Besar Datuk Onn Hafiz Ghazi said this was a substantial increase from RM4 billion achieved in the same period last year. "Last year, in the first quarter of 2024, we only achieved RM4 billion in FDI. That means, if you compare quarter to quarter, there's an increment of RM24 billion just within one year, and this is just the beginning," he said. He noted that the federal government has allocated about RM5 million to upgrade infrastructure within the SEZ area, which includes Desaru Coast, to ensure they are world-class standards. "As you can see, we've started widening highways, including the North-South Expressway, and upgrading the Senai-Desaru Expressway. The Rapid Transit System is also progressing and is expected to be operational by 2027," he added. Onn Hafiz made these remarks during the signing ceremony of a new hotel management agreement and a press conference to announce the appointment of a new operator for Desaru Coast here, today. The ceremony marked the transition of Desaru Coast's flagship luxury resort from One&Only to Mandarin Oriental, a move expected to boost the destination's appeal to high-net-worth travellers from Singapore and the wider region. Meanwhile, the JS-SEZ is a landmark bilateral initiative aimed at strengthening economic integration, connectivity, and cooperation between Malaysia and Singapore, particularly through Johor. A Memorandum of Understanding was signed in January 2024, followed by a formal Agreement of Cooperation in January 2025. Onn Hafiz said to ensure the success of the SEZ, the government is also focusing on human capital development through the Johor Talent Development Council. "We're working with the hotel industry to ensure our people receive training that meets industry standards. Whatever we do, it must have positive impact on our people. Out of 1,500 employees in Desaru Coast, 70 per cent are Johoreans," he added.
