The Evolution of Sustainability Strategies of Companies Operating in Emerging Markets

Introduction
The last five years has seen a rapid evolution in sustainability strategies for infrastructure and energy companies. We recently conducted a study with the International Finance Corporation (IFC) of more than 100 companies that operate in emerging markets to identify trends in sustainability priorities, reporting practices and how strategies are anchored and financed at these companies.
Methodology
The study included 104 companies across six sectors: Energy, Technology, Media, and Telecom (TMT), Transport, Mining, Water & Waste, and 'Cross-Cutting' companies with operations across more than one sector. Data was gathered from publicly available documents, company websites, and databases like S&P Capital IQ and LSEG Data & Analytics. This information was analyzed using a sector performance model developed by KPMG which considered 51 KPIs across Strategy, Governance, KPI & Data Reporting, Environmental, Social, and Community Benefit-Sharing.
Key findings
1. Companies are embracing sustainable finance
51% of the companies studied used sustainable finance. Among the financial instruments most used by the companies, green bonds (53%) lead, followed by sustainability-linked bonds (30%) and loans (25%). Moreover, 25% of the companies have sought support from DFIs and multilateral development banks such as IFC, EBRD and ADB. Among the six major sectors these companies are operating, Water & Waste (75%), and Energy (74%) sector companies are leading in terms of the use of sustainability-linked finance whereas Transport sector companies (16%) trail the companies in other sectors.
2. Increased disclosure on gender equality data
Most companies have disclosed gender-related data, indicating a growing commitment to transparency and accountability. Standout sectors include mining and energy while sectors with opportunities to enhance disclosures include TMT, transport, water, and waste sectors. Despite increased disclosure and reporting, fewer companies publicly disclose targets for gender diversity. Further, there is opportunity to encourage a comprehensive approach to inclusion that goes beyond gender to include other key areas such as disability, underserved groups and communities depending on the operational and geographic contexts these companies are operating in.
3. Decarbonization targets and nature-based solutions
We reviewed company-specific targets across Scopes 1, 2 and 3 as well as whether these were structured as carbon neutral or net-zero targets. The analysis showed that:
Across all sectors, there is limited progress in Scope 3 reduction targets by the companies analyzed. 44% of companies do not disclose Scope 3 emissions.
4. Increasing focus on nature
Companies are increasingly prioritizing biodiversity by integrating it into their operations through conservation, restoration, innovative solutions, and sustainable land management. As part of their resilience strategy, companies are prioritizing nature-based solutions and initiatives that help drive the global energy transition and combat climate change. However, the adoption rate of sustainable disclosure standards on this newer topic remains lower and slower than many others: Only 10 out of 104 companies analyzed are the adopters of Taskforce on Nature-related Financial Disclosures (TNFD).
5. Evolving efforts on community benefit-sharing
Based on the analysis of twenty-five companies in energy and infrastructure sectors on their community-benefit sharing efforts, the majority (84%) have been disclosing education and skill-focused initiatives with measurable impact. Other areas include humanitarian support/environmental protection (48%), health-related projects (44%) community climate resilience initiatives (8%).
Across sectors there is also priority placed on disclosing impacts in Latin America and Africa, with a focus on cultural heritage preservation, access to improved infrastructure and services, community-level education, and healthcare improvement, among others.
The path forward: Overcoming challenges and accelerating impact

Why KULR Technology Stock Is Plummeting Today

After the market closed last Friday, KULR announced that it will carry out a reverse stock split. KULR will implement an 8-for-1 reverse stock split on June 23. The reverse split will help KULR keep trading on its current exchange, but some investors are seeing negative signs in the move. 10 stocks we like better than KULR Technology Group › KULR Technology (NYSEMKT: KULR) stock is getting hit with huge selling action in Monday's trading. The company's share price was down 21.3% as of 3 p.m. ET, despite the S&P 500 (SNPINDEX: ^GSPC) being up 0.9% at the same point in the day's trading. KULR is seeing a big valuation pullback today following news that the company will carry out a reverse stock split. The new structure for the stock won't do anything to alter the fundamentals of the business, but investors are dumping shares ahead of the 8-for-1 reverse split that will take effect on June 23. After surging late in 2024's trading, KULR stock has seen big sell-offs this year. The company's share price is down roughly 74.5% year to date. As a result of the big valuation pullback, KULR's share price is currently below the $1 threshold necessary to continue trading on the NYSE-American Market. By announcing the reverse stock split before its shares had been trading below the threshold for a significant amount of time, KULR may also be able to avoid new rules from the New York Stock Exchange approved earlier this year that make it more difficult to use reverse splits to remain in compliance. KULR's reverse stock split will take effect next Monday and will result in the equivalent of eight existing shares being combined into one new share. The move will have the effect of boosting the company's share price, but it won't alter the fundamentals of the business. Continuing to trade on the NYSE-American Market exchange is probably a good thing for KULR over the long term because it will continue to make the stock easily available for a wide range of investors. On the other hand, it's not hard to see why some investors are reacting negatively to the reverse stock-split news. Reverse splits often occur because a company and its stock are struggling, and they can also limit some of the potential for explosive short-term gains that some investors may be seeking with penny stocks. Fintech Pioneer Amartha Secures $55M from European Development Finance Institutions to Empower Women Entrepreneurs in Rural Indonesia

JAKARTA, Indonesia, June 18, 2025 /PRNewswire/ -- Indonesian fintech pioneer Amartha, a digital financial technology provider which serves Indonesia's rural grassroots entrepreneurs, has secured USD $55 million in funding from three European development finance institutions: Swedfund (Sweden), Finnfund (Finland), and BIO (Belgian Investment Company for Developing Countries). Andi Taufan Garuda Putra, Founder & CEO of Amartha, stated, "This collaboration with three European state-owned development finance institutions highlights foreign investors' recognition of both the tremendous potential of the grassroots segment and Amartha's strong capability and governance in serving it. Amartha is committed to channeling this funding to reach millions of grassroots women entrepreneurs across Indonesia." Of the total $55 million, Swedfund contributed $25 million, while Finnfund and BIO each contributed $15 million. This funding will be channeled to support women-led microenterprises in rural areas through increased access to financing. The loan is part of a broader syndicated facility of up to USD 199 million, led by the International Finance Corporation (IFC), a member of the World Bank Group. "The funding comes as a strong vote of confidence in Amartha's grassroots-focused model and proven operational excellence, especially at a time when startup investment across Southeast Asia has slowed," said Amartha Chief Financial Officer Ramdhan Anggakaradibrata. Both DealStreetAsia and Tech in Asia reported a continued funding decline into Q1 2025 for the Southeast Asian tech ecosystem. Founded in 2010, Amartha has provided financial services to more than 3.3 million ultra-micro businesses across Indonesia of which 99 percent are women-owned. "Our model combines responsible lending, digital innovation, including robust AI-enabled risk profiling and management, and hyperlocal understanding of grassroots behavior," Taufan added. "It's this blend that builds trust, not not just with our customers, but with global investors seeking real impact." Jane Niedra, Investment Director for Financial at Swedfund, stated, "Swedfund's investment will enable Amartha to reach women entrepreneurs in rural areas with financial resources through responsible lending, boosting local economic stability and growth." Finnfund highlighted Amartha's innovation in developing the AmarthaFin digital app, which aims to broaden access to financial services in underserved areas. "It has recently developed a new app, AmarthaFin, whereby Amartha's customers can become micro-lenders to other group loan borrowers. With AmarthaFin, borrowers can generate more income," said Ulla-Maija Rantapuska, Senior Investment Manager at Finnfund. BIO CEO Joris Totté also emphasized the importance of digital financial tools. "Digital payments and e-wallets are powerful tools for financial inclusion, especially in rural communities where traditional banking infrastructure is limited," he said. Earlier this year, Amartha convened global players at the 2025 Asia Grassroots Forum in Bali, highlighting the untapped potential of rural economies and laying the groundwork for broader investment and collaboration. "In our 15-year journey focusing on this segment, Amartha has demonstrated that such potential can be realized through technology built on a deep understanding of the behaviors and needs of the communities we serve. We are grateful for the trust Swedfund, Finnfund, and BIO have placed in us in supporting our mission for greater financial inclusion," Taufan concluded. About Amartha Amartha's mission is to improve the welfare of the grassroots segment, through tailored digital financial services. Founded in 2010, Amartha is now growing to build a microfinance ecosystem through capital loan, risk segmentation and payment services. Amartha advances the bottom of the pyramid by increasing the competitiveness of MSMEs. Thus, we empower more women's MSMEs, create jobs and build more inclusive economic growth. As of March 2025, Amartha, which is licensed and supervised by the Financial Services Authority (OJK), has disbursed working capital loans of more than 35 trillion rupiah to 3.3 million MSMEs, of which more than 90 percent are led by women, spread across more than 50,000 villages throughout Indonesia. About BIO The mission of the Belgian Investment Company for Developing Countries (BIO)is to promote the establishment of a strong private sector in developing and emerging countries, to enable them to access growth and sustainable development, within the framework of the Sustainable Development Goals. BIO was created in 2001 with the Belgian Federal State as sole shareholder. Its ultimate goal is to help strengthen the private sector in developing countries.
