Russia Ukraine war: The Russia-Ukraine war that started on 24 February 2022 reached a turning point on June 1 when Ukraine launched the largest drone attack on Russia to date. The attack damaged over 40 of Russia's warplanes, mostly bombers. It is reported that this drone attack targeted Russia's advanced bombers like the A-50, TU-95, and TU-22M3. This attack was strategically very significant and aimed at weakening Russia's air power, according to Ukrainian sources. It is also the first time that Ukraine has hit Russia very deep inside Russian territory as a drone attack was recorded for the first time in Russia's Irkutsk region in Siberia, almost 4500 km from the border. Operation Spider's Web The coordinated strikes targeted the Russian Air Force's Long-Range Aviation assets at five air bases of Belaya, Dyagilevo, Ivanovo Severny, Olenya, and Ukrainka. As mentioned, this audacious and highly strategic attack was carried out by first-person view (FPV) drones as part of the 'Operation Spider's Web'. More sophisticated setups include a pan-and-tilt gimbaled camera controlled by a gyroscope sensor in the pilot's goggles and with dual onboard cameras, enabling a true stereoscopic view. Usually, it involves mounting a small video camera and an analogue video transmitter to a remote controlled (RC) aircraft and flying by means of a live video down-link, displayed on video goggles, smartphone, or a portable monitor. FPV became increasingly common throughout the late 2000s and early 2010s and is currently one of the fastest growing activities involving RC aircraft. FPVs are mostly used for aerial photography and videography and many video and films are made using these, especially the aerial sequences. Advantages of FPV drones The FPV drones are economical and given their compactness and maneuverability they can be used for reconnaissance, spying, espionage, and attack purposes in real time. All this is done without putting the life of the operator at risk. According to a Reuters report, the total cost of one such drone equipped with a payload (say, an explosive device) can be as little as $500 (around Rs 42,000). Given the significantly higher average costs of more conventional artillery systems, they make attractive alternatives. 'The tiny, inexpensive FPV (first-person view) drone has proved to be one of the most potent weapons in this war, where conventional warplanes are relatively rare because of a dense concentration of anti-aircraft systems near front lines,' says the report. Drones have changed the very fabric of wars and military conflicts and are more commonly used as they minimise the risk to human life. Microsoft unit in Russia to file for bankruptcy, database shows
One of Microsoft Corp's subsidiaries in Russia plans to file for bankruptcy, according to a note published on the official Fedresurs registry on Friday. Microsoft did not immediately respond to an emailed request for comment. President Vladimir Putin said this week that foreign service providers like Microsoft and Zoom should be "throttled" in Russia to make way for domestic software solutions. Microsoft continued providing key services in Russia after Moscow's February 2022 invasion of Ukraine, but in June 2022 it said it was significantly scaling down its operations due to changes to the economic outlook and the impact on its business there. The U.S. tech giant had already removed Russian state-owned media outlet RT's mobile apps from the Windows App store and banned advertisements on Russian state-sponsored media in the days after the invasion. The note posted on Fedresurs on Friday said that Microsoft Rus LLC was intending to declare bankruptcy. The TASS news agency reported that Microsoft has three other Russian units - Microsoft Development Centre Rus, Microsoft Mobile Rus and Microsoft Payments Rus. It was not immediately clear how those units might be affected. Alphabet-owned Google's Russian subsidiary filed for bankruptcy in 2022, saying that the seizure of its bank account by Russian authorities had made it untenable for its Russian office to function, including paying Russia-based employees, suppliers and vendors.
