Rutte voices hope for 'NATO-wide' defense cooperation with S. Korea: Seoul
The chief of the North Atlantic Treaty Organization has expressed his strong interest in expanding defense cooperation with South Korea, not just on an individual country basis, but also at a "NATO-wide" level, Seoul's foreign ministry said Thursday.
NATO Secretary General Mark Rutte made the call during his meeting with Foreign Minister Cho Tae-yul who is in Brussels this week to attend the foreign ministers' gathering of NATO member states.
South Korea was invited as a guest nation of NATO's Indo-Pacific partners that include Australia, Japan and New Zealand.
Rutte "expressed hope that South Korea would pursue defense cooperation, not only with individual NATO members but also with NATO as a whole," the ministry said in a release.
"Cho suggested expanding collaboration by starting with practical, achievable measures, through working-level discussions," it said.
At the meeting, Cho called for NATO's support in expediting the establishment of a South Korea-NATO intelligence-sharing channel, an initiative that has been in progress since last year.
Cho further emphasized military cooperation between Russia and North Korea "must be stopped immediately," stressing the North "should not be rewarded in any way for its wrongful actions in the course of peace negotiations," referring to Pyongyang's troop dispatch to Russia in support of the war against Ukraine.
Agreeing with Cho, Rutte highlighted the need for close coordination between NATO and its Indo-Pacific partners regarding the Russia-North Korea military ties, the ministry said.
Cho also reaffirmed South Korea's commitment to supporting Ukraine's swift reconstruction, saying South Korea plans to provide a long-term $2 billion package starting this year to assist such efforts, following last year's $400 million of aid. (Yonhap)

FKI promotes S. Korea's US investments at congressional charity baseball game in Washington
South Korea's Federation of Korean Industries said Thursday it has participated as a sponsor in an annual US congressional charity baseball event in Washington as part of efforts to promote Korean companies' investments in America. The FKI's sponsorship of the Congressional Baseball Game for Charity held Wednesday was aimed at fostering bilateral ties, as ongoing bilateral tariff negotiations are expected to accelerate amid the recent change in government in South Korea. During the event, the FKI aired promotional videos highlighting the achievements of Korean companies investing in the United States. The promotional content noted that since the first term of US President Donald Trump in 2016, Korean companies have invested over $160 billion in the US and created an estimated 830,000 jobs. FKI Chairman Ryu Jin attended the official reception for the event and emphasized Korea's investment contributions. He also promoted the country's competitiveness in promising sectors for bilateral cooperation, such as shipbuilding and energy. The federation said it plans to continue promoting Korean corporate activities in the US through local media and social media platforms. (Yonhap)

N. Korean leader Kim sends message congratulating Putin on Russia Day
North Korean leader Kim Jong-un sent a message congratulating Russian President Vladimir Putin on Russia Day, the North's state media reported Wednesday. North Korean Ambassador to Russia Sin Hong-chol "respectfully" conveyed Kim's message to the relevant official at the Russian foreign ministry, the Korean Central News Agency (KCNA) said. Russia Day, which falls in June 12, is a national holiday that marks the 1990 adoption by the Russian parliament of the declaration of state sovereignty of the present-day Russian Federation. Details of Kim's letter were not disclosed, but the message likely reaffirmed the North's commitment to advancing their bilateral relations based on the treaty signed by the two leaders in June last year. In his previous message to Putin on Russia Day last year, Kim called their bilateral ties "a strategic asset" for both countries, reaffirming the North's steadfast commitment to advancing the relationship "in line with the demands of the new era."
