‘I left really frustrated' — Mother of Bayles Lake crash victim not feeling heard
CHAMPAIGN, Ill. (WCIA) — Months of back and forth with the Iroquois County Highway Department have left a mother exhausted. Her daughter was hurt after she crashed into Bayles Lake last year.
Amanda Loveless wants more safety in the area to prevent crashes like her daughter's. In December, 18-year-old Elaine Carman-Loveless was driving down County Road 200N in Loda when her SUV hit a patch of ice. It hit the guardrails, continued to slide and ended up in the lake.
Carman-Loveless was able to get out of the SUV through the back and survived.
'I'm not the only one,' Carman-Loveless said. 'My mom's the one who expressed concerns.'

Ever since that cold December day, Carman-Loveless and her mother have been asking for new safety equipment to be installed. On Thursday, Loveless went to the ICHD's meeting in Watseka to see if there were any updates on safety measures.
This was the first meeting since Iroquois County State's Attorney Michael Quinlan sent a letter to Charles Alt, the Transportation and Highway Committee chairman, and Alan Hardwood, the Iroquois County Highway Engineer. In the letter, Quinlan said the county would not be held liable if they decided to put up new safety equipment.
But that doesn't mean they're going up, and Carman-Loveless and her mother feel they aren't being heard.
'It's more hurtful to me than anything to feel very disregard and ignored as another human being' Carman-Loveless said.

The two said they've reached out to the Iroquois County Transportation and Highway Committee multiple times. Loveless has been to all but one meeting this year.
At the meeting Thursday morning, she said it reached a boiling point.
'I was told that they had only five minutes,' Loveless said. 'They had somewhere to be, which was really frustrating because I take off work to be at these meetings. But then also, they just stated, 'Hey, wait, we aren't discussing this.''
Loveless said Alt said there were no future plans to discuss the issue. He did not respond to WCIA 3's requests for comment, and Harwood declined to comment.

When asked if she had a message for the board, Carman-Loveless had this to say:
'If this was your child or if this was you, you would feel the same way I do and you would be up at night reading every comment that's hurtful towards you,' she said. 'And they would play in your head every time you're driving.'
Despite being frustrated, Loveless and her daughter said they're both going to continue to push for changes to be made to the road. Loveless said she wants the county to apply for an IDOT grant to fix county roads. The deadline for that is mid-June.

Kennedy Expressway Ohio Street ramp opening delayed when car drives onto fresh concrete
The Illinois Department of Transportation said the reopening of the Ohio Street ramp on the Kennedy Expressway has been delayed. IDOT said a car drove into the work zone and onto freshly poured concrete, damaging the concrete and pushing back the reopening of the outbound ramp by about a week. The third and final phase of the Kennedy Construction Project began in March. While this phase is running ahead of schedule by about a month, according to officials, the whole project isn't set to be completed until Thanksgiving. On June 5, the Division Street and Ontario Street on-ramps to the outbound Kennedy closed for about two weeks. On Monday, June 9, the outbound Kennedy off-ramps North and Fullerton avenues will close for about two weeks. The Ogden Avenue on-ramp to the outbound Kennedy is currently closed, as is the on-ramp at Armitage Avenue. They are expected to reopen the week of June 9. The Ohio Street ramp was also on track to reopen next week until the concrete was damaged. "Reminder: Follow posted signs and stay alert in work zones—your attention keeps everyone safe," IDOT wrote on their social media.

Illinois State Police gifted new, high-tech command vehicle
SPRINGFIELD, Ill. (WCIA) — The Illinois State Police is adding a new, state-of-the-art vehicle to its fleet, one that administrators hope will enhance public safety and improve emergency response coordination. It's a 2025 Freightliner command vehicle, which will replace a similar vehicle that is 18 years old and outfitted with antiquated technology. The new vehicle has high-definition cameras and monitors, state-of-the-art communications technology and real-time data access. It can also function as a conference room with dual slide-outs. Illinois appoints first female State Fire Marshal Administrators said in a news release that the vehicle will serve as a central hub for State Troopers during emergencies like natural disasters, large-scale accidents and search-and-rescue operations. ISP also plans to use it for training officers on responding to HAZMAT incidents. 'This command vehicle gives us the ability to respond faster, coordinate more effectively, and better serve our communities during critical incidents,' Director Brendan F. Kelly said. 'It's a mobile operations center that puts technology and leadership exactly where it's needed most—right on the ground at the scene of the incident.' The vehicle will also serve a purpose beyond emergency situations. To strengthen the connection between the Illinois State Police and the public, the vehicle will also be used for community outreach programs, safety demonstrations and public events. I-57 road work set to start in Iroquois Co.
IROQUOIS COUNTY, Ill. (WCIA) — The Illinois Department of Transportation announced on Thursday that construction on Interstate 57 is set to begin in Iroquois County next week. The construction on I-57 will start on Wednesday, May 28. The nearly five-mile work zone will span from a half mile north of the Illinois 116 interchange at exit 293 to two miles north of the Clifton interchange at exit 297. Central Illinois lanes remaining closed for Memorial Day: The work will mill and resurface the road, including the Clifton interchange ramps. One lane of traffic will be open in each direction during the $9.8 million project, which is expected to be finished in September. Drivers should expect delays and allow extra time for trips through this area and be prepared for slow and stopped traffic. In order to avoid the work area, when possible, motorists should consider the use of alternate routes. Drivers are also encouraged to pay close attention to changed conditions and signs in the work zones, obey the posted speed limits, refrain from using mobile devices and be alert for workers and equipment.
