US President Donald Trump has ruled out seeking a third term, despite previously hinting at the possibility on multiple occasions.
In an interview with The Atlantic, published on Monday and marking his first 100 days in office, Trump was asked about a rumor that he had directed the US Justice Department to examine whether it would be legal for him to run again in 2028, when he will turn 82.
He stated that he had not done so but appeared to leave the possibility open, suggesting that he might be reluctant to break the democratic norm.
'That would be a big shattering, wouldn't it?' He mused. 'Well, maybe I'm just trying to shatter.'
Trump pointed out that his supporters had often urged him to run for a third term, but that he ultimately dismissed the idea, insisting that he has had no actual plans to stay in office beyond his second term.
'It's not something that I'm looking to do. And I think it would be a very hard thing to do.'
However, profiting from the idea appears to be a feasible option. Earlier this month, the US president launched a new line of 'TRUMP 2028' merchandise, driving speculation about a possible third-term bid.
The official campaign store offers baseball caps and T-shirts, featuring 'TRUMP 2028' and the slogan 'Rewrite the Rules,' echoing the style of his iconic 'Make America Great Again' branding.
Last month, Trump said he is 'not joking' about potentially seeking a third term, claiming that there are 'methods' to pursue another run despite the US Constitution's two-term limit on the presidency. His comments fueled fears that he might attempt to overhaul the country's electoral system in order to remain in power, though several high-profile Republicans dismissed the idea as little more than a joke.

Trump had already mobilized 2,000 National Guard members to the country's second most populous city on Saturday, with some 300 taking up positions protecting federal buildings and officers on Sunday. On Monday -- the fourth day of protests against immigration raids in the city that have seen some scuffles with law enforcement -- the Trump administration announced the mobilization of the 700 Marines as well as an "additional" 2,000 National Guard. A senior administration official told AFP that "active-duty US Marines from Camp Pendleton will be deployed to Los Angeles to help protect federal agents and buildings." The official first gave a figure of 500 Marines, but later updated the number to 700. Deploying active duty military personnel like US Marines into a community of civilians within the United States is a highly unusual measure. The US military separately confirmed the deployment of "approximately 700 Marines" from an infantry battalion following the unrest. They would "seamlessly integrate" with National Guard forces that Trump deployed to Los Angeles on Saturday without the consent of California's Democratic Governor Gavin Newsom. The deployment was meant to ensure there were "adequate numbers of forces," it added. Pentagon spokesman Sean Parnell then announced the mobilization of "an additional 2,000 California National Guard to be called into federal service to support ICE (Immigration and Customs Enforcement) & to enable federal law-enforcement officers to safely conduct their duties." It was not immediately clear if the "additional" 2,000 guardsmen were on top of the 2,000 that had already been mobilized, or only the 300 that were already in the streets of Los Angeles. Newsom wasted little time accusing the president of sowing "chaos" in Los Angeles. "Trump is trying to provoke chaos by sending 4,000 soldiers onto American soil," the governor posted on X. Earlier, he slammed the "deranged" decision by "dictatorial" Trump to send in Marines. US Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth had first mentioned that the Marines could be deployed on Saturday.

World Cup 2026 host cities say fans 'welcome' despite ongoing border control
USA - American World Cup host city officials assured Monday that overseas fans would be welcome at next year's tournament in the United States, Canada and Mexico despite "uncertainty" amid ongoing concerns over visas, border controls and social unrest. In a briefing in New York that came just over a year from the opening game of the tournament on June 11, 2026, officials said President Donald Trump's administration remained "extremely supportive" of the World Cup. Since returning to power, Trump has started a global trade war, threatened to annex Canada and launched a border crackdown that has led to harsh treatment of foreign visitors attempting to enter the United States. Trump's immigration offensive has in turn led to civil unrest, with clashes in Los Angeles over the weekend triggered by large-scale raids last week. Eleven American cities will host the bulk of the games at next year's World Cup, which is being co-hosted by three nations for the first time and has been expanded to include 48 teams. Executives from the local organising committees for the 11 US World Cup venues gathered in New York on Monday to brief on logistical aspects of the tournament, including transportation, stadium access, fan zones as well as general access to the United States. "For each of our cities, we want to be prepared to make any person that is coming and makes the decision to come to the United States or come to this World Cup feel that they are welcome," said Meg Kane, head of the Philadelphia organising committee. - 'Extremely supportive' - Kane said while officials were planning "within uncertainty" due to matters taking place at national and international level, the Trump administration was firmly behind the tournament. "People want to come to these mega sporting events, and they're going to travel to ensure that they're able to cheer on and see their team play. "Our job as a host committee is to make sure that we are putting on an event and making sure that our city and our region is ready to welcome everyone who's able to come to the World Cup," added Lasry, who was previously an assistant secretary for tourism in President Joe Biden's government. Los Angeles World Cup committee vice-president Jason Krutzsch said organisers were working to ensure fans "understand that they are welcome in Los Angeles and will have an amazing World Cup experience." "We're working closely with the administration," Krutzsch said adding that Trump's World Cup Task Force was established to "make sure that we can welcome fans from around the world and deliver an exceptional experience." As well as hosting games at the World Cup, Los Angeles will also stage the Super Bowl in 2027 before hosting the 2028 Olympics. "We really want to make sure that 2026 goes well," Krutzsch said. "We're really focused on delivering an exceptional experience in 2026 for the world.
