Teenager in critical condition after a mother and three of her children die in London fire

Yahoo6 days ago

A teenage girl injured in a fire that killed a mother and three of her children in north-west London on Saturday is in a critical condition in hospital, police have said, as officers continue to question a man suspected of their murders.
A 43-year-old woman, a 15-year-old girl and two boys aged eight and four died at the scene of the fire which gutted two homes in the Stonebridge area of Brent in the early hours of Saturday.
A 13-year-old girl from the same family remains in critical condition, the Metropolitan police said on Sunday afternoon. The force said a 71-year-old woman from the same family who was also injured in the fire had been discharged from hospital.
A 41-year-old man who was arrested outside the house on Saturday morning remained in custody on Sunday afternoon.
Bunches of flowers and a blue teddy bear were left near to the homes as fire crews wearing helmets and respiratory equipment built scaffolding against the burnt out buildings.
Neighbours said the family are of Pakistani origin and had lived on Tillett Close for years.
Firefighters said the mother and one of her children were rescued from the second floor butpronounced dead by air ambulance crews.
The other two children who were declared dead were found inside the property as crews tackled the fire, London fire brigade said.
Cecilia Marquis, 60, a neighbour, said she was 'stunned by the devastation' of the fire.
Marquis, who is a caterer at Brentford FC and witnessed the fire, said: 'This will leave a devastating impact.'
In a statement on Saturday, Supt Steve Allen, from the Met's local policing team in north-west London, said detectives were leading the investigation into the cause of the fire.
'Despite the efforts of the emergency services, I can confirm a woman and three of her children died at the scene,' Allen said.
'The wider family have been informed, and officers will continue to support them at this incredibly difficult time.
'I recognise the significant impact this incident has had on the community.'

Former EastEnders star Joe Absolom joins Emmerdale cast

Former EastEnders actor Joe Absolom is to join the cast of Emmerdale. The 46-year-old will play Ray, an old contact of Mackenzie Boyd (Lawrence Robb), in the ITV soap, having previously played Matthew Rose in BBC soap EastEnders from 1997 to 2000. ITV says Ray will arrive at the farm claiming to be selling farm machinery, but it is not long before his true drug-dealing ways become clear. Absolom said of his new role: 'Well, what an honour to join such a talented team at Emmerdale. It's an iconic show and I'm grateful to be part of it. I can't wait to see what's in stock for Ray.' ITV says Absolom's character will have a 'calm and collected exterior' with a hidden 'menacing streak'. Emmerdale producer Laura Shaw said: 'We are thrilled to welcome Joe Absolom to the cast. It's fantastic to have such a high-calibre and immensely talented actor join our wonderful team to play the role of Ray. 'Charming, charismatic and effortlessly likeable, Ray is an extremely complex character who very quickly shows his dark and villainous side to some of our most loved villagers, leaving them in no doubt as to what he's capable of.' The actor also appeared as Al Large in the ITV comedy drama Doc Martin between 2004 and 2022, and most recently played the role of Braden Moore in Code of Silence. It comes after ITV announced it was to air its first ever crossover between Coronation Street and Emmerdale, with fans able to vote for the characters they would like to see meet and interact. The hour-long crossover episode will air in January 2026 as ITV and STV announce a new hour of soap schedule, which will see half hour Emmerdale episodes air at 8pm, followed by 30-minute episodes of Coronation Street at 8.30pm. Emmerdale airs on weekdays at 7.30pm on ITV1 and STV, or from 7am on ITVX and STV Player.

Officers could be murdered in jail attacks

Prison officers need to have stronger protection against attacks by inmates, their union has demanded after four assaults in a week. In the latest, at HMP Long Lartin in Worcestershire on Friday, an officer had to be airlifted for emergency surgery after being stabbed. Three others were hurt over two days at HMP Whitemoor in Cambridgeshire. Now Mark Fairhurst, of the Prison Officers' Association (POA), has said prisoners who pose the highest risk should be "totally locked down". "It's only a matter of time before one of my colleagues is murdered on duty," he added. Mr Fairhurst, the POA's national chair, told BBC Breakfast: "We know our jails are awash with all kinds of illicit items, but we very rarely lock them down." He called for facilities like so-called supermax prisons in the US, in which dangerous inmates are locked up and only have limited access to recreation and other facilities outside their cells. Rise in assaults on prison staff by inmates High-security unit inmates barred from kitchens after attack Prison violence harming rehabilitation - families After Friday's stabbing, West Mercia Police said initial inquiries suggested it was "isolated" and was not being treated as terrorism, and had followed a disagreement between an inmate and staff. In Cambridgeshire, two of the three injured officers had boiling water thrown over them. Responding to those attacks, the Ministry of Justice (MoJ) condemned them as "unacceptable". "We will not tolerate assaults on hard-working prison officers and will always push for the strongest punishments against perpetrators," it said. Concerns had already been raised over increased violence in prisons in recent months. In April, the government suspended access to kitchen facilities for high-security inmates, after Manchester Arena bomber Hashem Abedi threw hot oil at officers and stabbed them with a blade, at HMP Frankland in County Durham. The union leader linked the violence to increasing amounts of contraband finding their way into jails, often dropped by drones flying over the prison estate. "Why are our air spaces not tightened? Why do we have ingress of drones in our prisons?" Mr Fairhurst asked. "Surely there must be technology out there that prevents drones entering air spaces?" Earlier this month, police made two arrests after a drone was seen circling above Long Lartin. Mr Fairhurst's warning echoed that of the chief inspector of prisons, who said in January that the issue was "a threat to national security" and that police had effectively "ceded airspace" to criminal gangs. The MoJ said it was "gripping the situation by investing in prison maintenance and security, working with the police and others to tackle serious organised crime". Man arrested after car hits number of pedestrians

Three people have been left with serious injuries after a car crashed into pedestrians in Leicester. Police were called to the incident in De Montfort Street in the city centre at 00:34 BST on Saturday, after receiving reports of a fight in the same location. The force said one man sustained minor injuries from the incident, whilst one other man and two women have serious injuries - all four remain in hopsital. A 31-year-old man, from Leicester, has been arrested on suspicion of causing grievous bodily harm with intent and causing serious injury by dangerous driving and remains in police custody. Police belive the suspect and the four victims involved in the incident had all been in attendance at a private event nearby before the incident. The car believed to have been involved in the incident was found in nearby Margaret Street and has been recovered as part of the investigation, said police. Det Insp Jenny Tattersall said: "We understand the serious concern there will be about this incident. "A large cordon is in place in the area of De Montfort Street and will remain while enquiries, including forensic investigations, are carried out."
