Surrey's bowlers dominated day one of the County Championship clash against Worcestershire, as Matt Fisher's 3-34 helped bundle the hosts out for 209.A middle- order collapse saw the bottom-side in Division One slip to 87-5, after both Jake Libby (28) and Henry Nicholls (31) made starts at Visit Worcestershire New Road.Jordan Clark impressed with three wickets of his own, as Matthew Waite dug in for a resilient 68 in an otherwise underwhelming batting display from the hosts.Dom Sibley and Ryan Patel batted through the remaining 15 overs of the day, as Surrey closed the day 47-0 and took charge of the contest.
The visitors returned to four-day action in a hurry, as Fisher trapped Gareth Roderick lbw in the 10th over of the morning – the first of his three wickets on the day in an eye-catching bowling display.Stand-in Worcestershire captain Libby came together with Nicholls to add 47 for the second wicket, before Surrey struck twice in five balls to leave the home side 70-3 at lunch.Worcestershire's batting unit continued to struggle early in the afternoon session, when Fisher removed Nicholls for 31, before Clark pinned Adam Hose lbw, as The Kia Oval-based outfit took control of proceedings.Ethan Brookes and Waite joined forces with their side in some peril at 87-5, but raised the 100 in the 43rd over of the day, shortly before Brookes was given a reprieve when he was dropped at gully, still in single figures.The pair accumulated 31 for the sixth wicket when former Worcestershire man Nathan Smith traded wickets with Mitchell Santner, as Surrey's bowlers continued to press on.Signing a one-game extension to enable his participation in this fixture, New Zealand international Santner showed all his class, returning figures of 1-38 from 15 overs as he bowled with expert control throughout.Waite brought up a defiant half-century just after tea, facing 77 balls on the way to reaching his third half-century of the season, scoring six boundaries in his standalone innings.Fisher returned to remove Ben Allison cheaply, before Fateh Singh joined Waite, as the pair came together to add a valuable 45 for the ninth wicket, before Waite held out to Dan Lawrence at long-on for a valiant 68.After wrapping up the Worcestershire innings for 209, openers Sibley and Patel made their way to the middle to face 15 overs.Despite catching a nasty blow on the arm from a rising Jacob Duffy short ball late on, Patel batted with great temperament, as he and Sibley saw their side through to stumps unscathed as Surrey trail by 162 runs with all 10 wickets in hand heading into the second morning.

'Exhilarating' Jofra Archer backed to make Test return after first County Championship outing in four years
Jofra Archer has been backed to make an immediate impact on his return to the England Test fold, with the fast bowler looking as dangerous as ever despite years of struggling with injuries. Archer played in his first County Championship match for four years on Sunday in a bid to prove his fitness for the second Test at Edgbaston, which starts a week on Wednesday. While there were few clues from his innings of 31 as Sussex reached 322 for nine on the opening day against Durham, Sussex bowling coach James Kirtley revealed Archer is up to full speed with the ball after a broken thumb. 'We came to practise here yesterday and it was a lively couple of overs he bowled there,' said the former England seamer. 'When I was taking the mitt it was exhilarating but it's not the most pleasurable of experiences. 'I wasn't any good with the bat so even giving myself 20 yards, it still keeps you on your toes. He had fun with it as well. Archer scored 31 runs off 34 deliveries as Sussex reached 322 for nine at the end of day one 'So the great thing is his pace is still there. He's not always bowled at the highest pace but he's capable of spells that are game-changing. That's what you look for. 'You want Jofra in an England team. He has an X-factor and he gives you that bit of pace England are looking for.' Archer has not played a Test since 2021 and Sussex have been getting him ready for the demands of red-ball cricket. Kirtley said: 'We've been managing getting his overs up, bowling back-to-back days, double spells, whatever it is that we need to do in terms of that back-to-bowling plan, but a lot of the time Jofra does it off his own back. 'He doesn't need managing as such, he gets on. He knows what he needs to do and that's a big sign that he wants to bowl in the Test series this summer and in the Ashes.'
