Once the Boston Red Sox traded Rafael Devers to the San Francisco Giants, there was reasonable doubt if the Red Sox would be buyers at the deadline. They just sold their best offensive player, so shipping off more of their assets would be surprising.

However, according to a new report from Chris Cotillo of Masslive.com, the Red Sox aren't expected to be done yet, and in fact, are expected to target players at the MLB trade deadline.
"The Devers deal opens the door for a major trade deadline addition of a controllable," Cotillo writes. "High-dollar player and a high-ranking source indicated Sunday that the Red Sox, at 37-36 after a big weekend sweep of the Yankees, still wholeheartedly intend to buy at the trade deadline and shop aggressively."
This report is an indication that the Red Sox are targeting certain players, or have a player they want to spend a lot of their assets on trying to acquire.
While unlikely, Paul Skenes of the Pittsburgh Pirates fits the bill that Cotillo describes. A high-cost player on the trade block doesn't happen often. But if one does make an appearance, the Red Sox are expected to be involved.

Whether this report comes to fruition or not, it's a necessary step for the Red Sox to make in their efforts to quell the irate fan base amid their frustration over the Devers trade. If the Devers trade led the team to getting a Skenes, or another high-profile player, then it would be significantly more palatable.

However, that kind of deal is hard to come by. And with there being very few players who fit the description, the Red Sox might not have the ability to add a player of that caliber. Not because they didn't try, but because none were available.
But, at the very least, the decision to still be buyers, especially if they're still in contention, is an exciting proposition in the build-up to the MLB trade deadline.
Boston and Chief Baseball Officer Craig Breslow will look to make a major move at the trade deadline. But with limited options and the potential to fall out of contention, the Red Sox might not be in a position to make such a move.
