Serie B playoff between Sampdoria and Salernitana suspended due to fireworks, seats thrown on pitch
ROME (AP) — Fireworks and seats thrown onto the pitch prompted a playoff between Sampdoria and Salernitana to stay in Serie B to be suspended midway through the second half.
The incidents involving Salernitana fans occurred after Sampdoria had taken a 2-0 lead Sunday in Salerno, putting it ahead 4-0 on aggregate.
The match will now likely be awarded as a 3-0 victory to Sampdoria according to league disciplinary measures — meaning Sampdoria should remain in Serie B while Salernitana will likely be relegated to Serie C.
Sampdoria has never been relegated to Serie C in its 79-year history and earlier this season brought back some players from its golden years in the 1990s to manage the squad out of crisis.
Salernitana was in Serie A in 2023-24.
Salernitana and Sampdoria finished 16th and 17th, respectively, in the Serie B standings this season.

'I was fairly stressed, because I didn't have much time to study. But I did my best,' Antonelli told reporters after taking the first portion of exams last week. He said English is his favorite subject 'because that's the one that comes easiest for me.' They notably said that some expenditures which predated the event and will continue afterward can't be attributed to Games. They also said that attributing major investments to the Olympics, despite being unrelated projects launched long before, is unjustified. 'Through its methodological choices, the Court has in fact declined to examine the only question that would meaningfully inform public debate: how much public money would have been saved if the Games had not been held in Paris?,' said Tony Estanguet, the former head of the organizing committee. The organizing committee, as it already stated during the contradictory procedure, estimates that this figure does not exceed (euro)2 billion, while the expected economic benefits of the Games are said to represent three to five times that amount,' he added. The Cour des Comptes insisted that its progress report is based on data available as of March 31, 2025, and does not claim to draw final conclusions.
