USS Gerald R. Ford Was Still Struggling With Its Dual Band Radar Prior To Deployment
The dual-band radar (DBR) aboard the Navy aircraft carrier USS Gerald R. Ford (CVN-78), the ship's primary sensor system, struggled to perform during a pre-deployment exercise and suffered failures as it grappled with the constant need for radar coverage. It remains unclear whether DBR's issues impacted Ford's operations during its first full deployment, which began in May 2023 and was extended before ending in January 2024, but the Navy is now seeking to replace Ford's DBR entirely.
These findings are part of the Pentagon's Director Operational Test and Evaluation (DOT&E) annual report released last week. The document contains revelations regarding what the Navy will need to do to continue using the DBR, which was only installed aboard Ford and a truncated version of it exists in the three ships of the USS Zumwalt (DDG-1000) class. The full DBR suite was supposed to equip these ships before being scaled back significantly a decade ago, mainly due to cost concerns. In addition to DBR, the latest DOT&E report also offers fresh insights into the state of the Navy's newest carrier, how it performed during deployment and the potential for rough seas ahead.
'DBR availability declined during the FY23 [composite training unit exercise] with the continuous demand for radar coverage and an intermittent failure observed during operations,' the report states. Service officials did not respond to TWZ questions on the report's findings by deadline, and this article will be updated when those answers come in. Prior DOT&E reports have blamed subpar DBR performance on 'the operational expectation of continuous radar coverage.'
Due to DBR only being installed on the Ford and a version of it and its combat system on three Zumwalt class ships, supporting DBR and its assorted maintenance, software and upgrades is a pricey proposition for the Navy, which is very heavily invested in the proven Aegis Combat System and associated sensors. The Navy is also considering replacing Zumwalt's radar with a SPY-6 variant and Aegis Combat System to help with sustainment and commonality across the fleet. The DOT&E notes both DBR's rarity and the challenges the Ford may face in keeping it up and running as it awaits the installation of a variant of the AN/SPY-6 radar.
The specific version of the SPY-6 destined to supplant the DBR on Ford is a subvariant of what is also known as the Enterprise Air Surveillance Radar (EASR) and will include three separate fixed antenna arrays installed around the carrier's island instead of the DBR's six arrays. All subsequent Ford class carriers will be built with EASR, leaving just Ford as the only carrier ever have fielded the DBR.
TWZ has previously unpacked the capabilities of the complete SPY-6 family, which currently includes four different variants, and the potential payoffs of fielding such an advanced and scalable active electronically scanned array radar system across the fleet. In addition to Ford class carriers, the Navy plans to install versions of the radar onto various new surface combatants, carriers and amphibious ships going forward, and plans are underway to back-fit it into existing destroyers as well.
It remains unclear precisely when the Ford will get EASR and the new DOT&E report warns that relying on the DBR until then will be challenging. For now, the Navy has asked manufacturer Raytheon to continue providing engineering efforts in support of the DBR program, Military + Aerospace Electronics reported in November. Raytheon did not respond to a TWZ request for comment on its DBR efforts by deadline Tuesday. The DOT&E report's data cutoff date was Oct. 1, 2024, and it remains unclear what progress, if any, has been made on correcting the ship's issues, including problems with the DBR, since then.
'Due to the one-of-a-kind nature of the DBR, its availability will depend on the Navy's access to replacement parts throughout the remaining life of the system,' the DOT&E report states. 'The Navy should acquire sufficient DBR replacement parts for the interim period prior to the scheduled replacement of DBR with EASR.'
DBR was billed as the service's first radar system capable of operating simultaneously on the S-band and X-band frequency ranges. It combines the functionality of the X-band AN/SPY-3 multifunction radar and the S-band SPY-4 volume search radar (VSR) for detecting and tracking targets. It and its underlying combat system was billed central nervous system of the Ford class.
But citing costs and the fact that it might be more radar than a carrier needed, given the capabilities of carrier strike group (CSG) destroyers and cruisers, the Navy opted to replace DBR back in 2016 Military Aerospace + Electronics's John Keller reported. Continued reliability issues and it having zero commonality with the rest of the fleet were also huge concerns. Cost was also a factor, and officials said that moving to the EASR for the Ford class's second carrier, the future USS John F. Kennedy (CVN-79), would save the service up to $120 million.
Even with last year's extended deployment under its belt, the Ford continues to suffer a host of other problems across various ship systems beyond the DBR. Insufficient data has been gathered to determine the carrier's operational effectiveness due to initial operation and testing evaluations remaining incomplete, according to the DOT&E.
In some ways, the tardiness of Ford's testing is to be expected, according to Bradley Martin, a retired Navy surface warfare officer and senior policy analyst at the RAND think tank.
'Many things about the Ford are unusual, and a starting point is that it was delivered late,' Martin told TWZ. The Ford was delivered in 2017, after roughly 15 months of delays. Its first cruise was pushed back several years as well.
'It's not exactly that the Navy's operational needs scuppered the testing cycle as much as the ship being delivered late meant that the operational schedule had already been perturbed,' he said.
TWZ has extensively covered the trials and tribulations of the Ford over the years, and the DOT&E's new report provides added insight into the struggles the Navy has long faced in fixing problems like advanced weapons elevators (AWE), subpar sortie generation rates, and other issues. At one point lawmakers derided the ship as little more than 'a $13-billion nuclear-powered floating berthing barge.' TWZ has also covered Ford's engineering advancements, from its new island design to a novel video system offering 360-degree situational awareness.
While Ford has suffered a variety of missteps over the years, few ship failures have attracted more scrutiny than the AWEs. Billed as a next-generation breakthrough, it took the Navy roughly four years after accepting the Ford to make all 11 of its weapons elevators work.
The Navy reported to DOT&E that Ford's weapons department conducted 11,369 AWE runs during its May 2023 to January 2024 deployment, moving more than 1.8 million pounds of ordnance to the flight deck. Still, the report notes that these rates fall short of what these AWEs are supposed to move.
'Of note, the crew is reliant on off-ship technical support for correction of hardware and software failures,' the report states.
During its deployment, the Ford maintained fighter jet sortie generation rates 'that were sufficient to meet combatant commander operational taskings.' But during carrier qualifications and other evolutions, sortie generation rates have fallen short of the program requirements, a baseline that is not listed in the report. The DOT&E blames these shortfalls on continuing issues with the 'reliability and maintainability' of the carrier's electromagnetic aircraft launch system (EMALS) and advanced arresting gear (AAG).
Ford is the first carrier to feature a catapult system not powered by steam, and issues have plagued EMALS for years. The DOT&E report warns that problems with EMALS and AAG 'continue to adversely affect sortie generation and flight operations.'
The report states that the EMALS catapult and AAG arresting gear system completed 8,725 launches and arrested landings during Ford's deployment. DOT&E did note that it hasn't received enough data from the Navy to update the reliability statistics laid out in last year's report.
It also warns of 'AAG reliability degraders,' and how challenges continue to exist when it comes to obtaining AAG replacement parts. The service continues to have to rely on 'off-ship technical support' to address AAG problems as well.
The Navy is also considering whether it should retrofit a fourth AAG engine on the carrier class. It was originally incorporated into Ford's design, but not installed 'as a cost savings measure,' the report states.
'The fourth engine would improve the reliability and availability of AAG, improve the pilot boarding rate, and restore a redundant capability to rig the barricade in the event of AAG engine failure, which the current configuration does not support,' the report states.
When it comes to EMALS in particular, DOT&E noted that 'reliability has not appreciably changed from prior years and reliance on off-ship technical support remains a challenge. NAVAIR is continuing development on improvements.'
Fiscal Year 2024 saw the Navy make improvements to how it collects EMALS reliability data, and a similar effort for the AAG is underway. But work remains to be done.
'The Navy has not yet shown progress for data collection on the other shipboard systems, but has implemented procedural changes designed to improve data collection within shipboard work centers in support of the FY25 scheduled test events,' the report states. Meanwhile, the sea service continues to update its test plan for areas like sortie generation rate, self-defense, and cyber survivability.
Ford's berthing for its crew and carrier air wing are also lacking, the DOT&E warns. TWZ has already reported on sailor quality-of-life issues like clogging toilets, and the new report indicates that sailors could be sardined together in ever-tighter quarters.
The prospect of Ford being overcrowded runs counter to the carrier class's original vision, which entailed design changes that would reduce manning to 15 percent below a Nimitz class carrier's force of 3,000 sailors. An embarked carrier air wing brings a Nimitz class carrier to about 5,000 in all.
New ships are supposed to feature growth allowances that would allow for an extra 10 percent of the ship's company, allowing for extra racks for crew turnover, visitors, and personnel temporarily assigned to the vessel.
'However, sufficient berthing is not installed for the Ford class to conduct combat operations with all hands assigned a bed, due to a lack of berthing capacity for embarked units,' the DOT&E found. 'If the ship and its embarked units were each at 100 percent manning, the ship would have a shortfall of 159 beds. These berthing shortfalls will affect quality of life onboard and could reduce the Navy's operational flexibility in employing the ship across its full spectrum of missions and logistical support roles for the CSG.'
Such rack shortfalls could increase as the carrier's air wing diversifies to host the CMV-22B Osprey, the MQ-25 Stingray aerial refueling drone, and the F-35 Joint Strike Fighter, none of which are currently part Ford's carrier air wing (CVW). The Stingray is not yet in service, and TWZ reported last month on other changes Navy brass has planned for CVWs.
Original test plan timelines for gauging other aspects of Ford were delayed due to 'the Navy's operational requirements,' the report notes.
The Navy and Pentagon faced a difficult choice with Ford. They could have waited for all the testing to be completed, or they could have sent it east from Norfolk as a contributing member of a carrier fleet that is already stretched thin, Martin noted.
'As of its deployment, it was capable of doing most of the things aircraft carriers need to do in the environment as it exists,' he said. 'Waiting for all those to be tested might have resulted in years of delay in getting the ship out to where it could take at least some of the pressure off the operational force.'
'Were all its systems tested to the point of readiness? No,' Martin said. 'Was the ship capable of doing the job of an aircraft carrier? Yes.'
The next carrier in the Ford class, the future USS John F. Kennedy, is scheduled for delivery later this fiscal year and will be capable of supporting F-35 operations. The future USS Enterprise (CVN-80) is running 18 months behind its original delivery date and is scheduled to be delivered to the Navy in Fiscal 2029, according to the DOT&E.
'This delay is due to complications with material availability and industry/supply chain performance,' the report notes.
The Navy will take possession of the future USS Doris Miller (CVN-81) in Fiscal 2032, according to the report. The following two Navy carriers, CVN-82 and CVN-83, will be named after presidents Bill Clinton and George W. Bush, respectively.
Ford's first full cruise was an operational win for the Navy's priciest and arguably one of its historically most troubled acquisitions programs. But the DOT&E report indicates that, at least up to the cutoff date for data available in the report, much work remained to be done on the Ford to ensure that it is the high-tech, capable power projector that it has been billed as since it's inception. Clearly, there has been some progress, but some of the ship's issues require major changes or physical additions, and those don't come quickly when it comes to massive warships.

Elon Musk's rift with President Donald Trump is exposing his companies to all the perilous downsides of going to war with his former First Buddy. From SpaceX's role as a defense and space contractor to Starlink's hopes for billions in federal broadband subsidies and air traffic control contracts, Musk's businesses stood to reap potentially limitless gains from his 130 days as Trump's cost-cutter-in-chief. Even after the world's richest man left the White House a week ago, acolytes from his Department of Government Efficiency remained in key positions at agencies that make decisions about his companies — including weighing how to handle safety problems at Tesla, alleged security violations involving X, Musk's potential ventures in cryptocurrency, or air pollution generated by his artificial intelligence agent Grok. Now those same arms of government — the vast, powerful federal bureaucracy that Trump has openly portrayed as a weapon to be wielded against his enemies — are potential threats to Musk's business empire. Already, fallout from the Musk-Trump feud has wiped billions of dollars off Tesla's stock, although it recovered somewhat Friday after the White House sent signals of a possible rapprochement. The drama could reshape myriad policy outcomes, including the futures of brain-chip technology or America's hopes of reaching Mars. 'This is quite the soap opera,' said Steve Sosnick, a Wall Street veteran who works as chief strategist for Interactive Brokers. 'A lot of people saw this as a potentially combustible relationship, but the speed and ferocity at which it combusted is really astounding.' Here are some of the potential implications for Musk's businesses as a once-mighty alliance between the two men at the peaks of wealth and political power devolves into an ugly divorce: Tesla is arguably the cornerstone of Musk's business interests, the company that helped electric cars go mainstream in the U.S. and has visions of dominating the future of self-driving taxis. But much of its fate is in the hands of regulators at the Transportation, Treasury and Commerce departments. Before Trump's second term started, DOT's National Highway Traffic Safety Administration had opened probes targeting significant concerns with Tesla's design, mostly involving its suite of auto-throttle and lane-keeping technologies that the company erroneously names 'Autopilot' or 'Full Self Driving.' The agency investigates safety issues with automakers and can issue recalls for cars that suffer defects — and while Tesla had been poised for a potentially easier ride with Musk in Trump's good graces, that dynamic could now flip. Musk is also keenly interested in autonomous vehicle technology and has a significant stake in seeing it more widely adopted. Early moves by DOT had appeared aligned with Musk's interests, including requiring less self-reporting for some crashes involving driverless cars. He also wants national standards for autonomous vehicles, rather than the state-by-state patchwork that exists now — a wish that Transportation Secretary Sean Duffy has supported. But Congress has failed in the past to enact legislation to create a national standard, and Musk's barrage of attacks on GOP congressional leaders could make that already heavy legislative lift even harder to reach. Tesla also benefits from a suite of federal clean energy policies left over from the Biden era, including a $7,500 tax break for electric vehicle purchases, that Republicans are now pushing to abolish in the 'big beautiful bill' that triggered the flameout between Musk and Trump. (Musk has denied that his attacks on the bill are an attempt to salvage the tax credits — saying his complaint is the trillions of dollars that the bill would add to the national debt.) Tesla faces an additional threat from a Commerce Department proposal earlier this year to impose tariffs of up to 721 percent on battery ingredients from China. The GOP megabill also threatens to deliver a quick death to tax incentives that are crucial for Tesla's solar energy generation and storage division, whose annual revenues recently jumped 67 percent year-over-year to $10 billion. Tesla Energy has instead urged the Senate to support a 'sensible wind down' of those tax credits, arguing that ending them abruptly 'would threaten America's energy independence and the reliability of our grid.' — Chris Marquette and Kelsey Tamborrino Trump's most direct threat to punish Musk came in a Truth Social post Thursday, in which he mused about cutting billions of dollars in the megabillionaire's companies' U.S. government contracts. Calling it 'the easiest way to save money in our Budget,' Trump added that he 'was always surprised that Biden didn't do it!' That threat could cut both ways. SpaceX alone has received at least $20.9 billion in government contracts over the past 18 years, largely from NASA and the Defense Department, according to public federal spending records. The majority of that funding was awarded within the last five years. But the government depends on Musk's companies as well, with the Pentagon relying on his rocket company, SpaceX, for rapid and low-cost launches. It is unlikely that its biggest competitors, including the joint Boeing and Lockheed Martin-backed venture ULA or the Jeff Bezos-led BlueOrigin, could make up the difference. NASA relies on SpaceX as the only American company able to ferry astronauts to and from the International Space Station, at least until Boeing works out problems with its Starliner. Musk, aware of that fact, greeted Trump's announcement with a counterpunch — tweeting that SpaceX would begin decommissioning its Dragon spacecraft 'immediately.' Musk later walked back that comment upon the advice of an account on X named 'Alaska.' If SpaceX did decommission Dragon, the U.S. would have to go back to hitching rides aboard Russian spacecraft — a potentially awkward arrangement as Trump pushes Russian President Vladimir Putin to resolve his war in Ukraine. The move would also imperil plans to launch commercial space stations under a NASA-funded program. In addition, SpaceX is key to NASA plans to return to the moon, with the company slated to provide a landing system for astronauts for a planned 2027 mission. SpaceX was also seen as a top contender to win contracts for Trump's proposed 'Golden Dome' defense system, which would rely on a constellation of satellites to track missile threats against the U.S. homeland. Musk's SpaceX has already landed federal contracts for seven upcoming space launches worth $845.8 million out of nine that the U.S. is set to conduct. Payload, a media outlet covering the space industry, estimated that SpaceX's revenue shot up by more than 50 percent to over $13 billion in 2024, with U.S. government launches and Starlink purchases helping to drive the increase. DOT could also create significant headaches for SpaceX, whose launches are licensed by the Federal Aviation Administration. SpaceX can't launch without an FAA permit, and under the Biden administration several of its launches were delayed or prohibited until the company fixed problems or passed environmental reviews. The FAA also slapped SpaceX with a $633,009 fine last year for separate launch violations, triggering Musk to call for its then-administrator Mike Whitaker to resign. Whitaker subsequently stepped down, effective the day Trump took office — years ahead of the end of his five-year term. — Jack Detsch, Joe Gould, Sam Skove, Oriana Pawlyk and Jessie Blaeser Starlink, SpaceX's satellite subsidiary, has been angling for a role in the FAA's promise to upgrade its beleaguered air traffic control system — one of the most criticized potential conflicts of interest between Musk's businesses and his former leading role in the Trump administration. And it's seeking billions of dollars in Biden-era broadband subsidies, a decision in the hands of the Commerce Department. Now all that is at risk. Musk has publicly promoted Starlink's satellite communications terminals as a solution for the FAA's communications technology problems, while criticizing Verizon's work on a $2.4 billion contract meant to upgrade the agency's telecom infrastructure from copper wires to fiber optics. (He later conceded that he had meant to criticize a different contractor.) Duffy more recently urged Congress to approve a massive improvement plan for the FAA that could, among other fixes, allow either fiber or satellite technology to replace the agency's telecommunications equipment. He said he was 'agnostic' about whether Musk's companies should be involved. Duffy also allowed SpaceX employees to visit an FAA air traffic control center in Virginia in February, and some SpaceX engineers took temporary jobs at the agency under an ethics arrangement that allowed them to take part in matters that could affect the company's financial interests. To date, however, the FAA has not disclosed any information about whether it intends to modify the Verizon contract or award any business to Starlink, beyond a handful of test sites that have been in progress since before Trump took office. At the same time, Starlink could reap enormous taxpayer subsidies from the federal buildout of fast internet access across the country as the Commerce Department overhauls its funding rules to allow a larger role for satellite companies. The changes in the $42.45 billion Broadband Equity, Access, and Deployment program were expected to hand a bigger role — and much more money — to new technologies like satellite broadband. Musk's Starlink would likely be the big winner from that overhaul. Musk was also looking to Trump-appointed officials in Commerce and the Federal Communications Commission to make smaller rule changes that could have helped expand Starlink's business, such as freeing up wireless bandwidth for satellite service providers. — Oriana Pawlyk and John Hendel The Federal Trade Commission is in charge of enforcing a consent decree stemming from a 2011 settlement with Musk's social media company — then called Twitter and under different ownership — over data security violations. The order was updated in 2022 when the company had to pay a $150 million fine for violating the original deal, and it's set to keep X under FTC scrutiny until 2042. The order requires periodic audits of X's privacy and security practices, and violations could result in extending the consent decree order, as well as additional fines. It's been a thorn in Musk's side since he acquired the company. The FTC is also investigating whether advertising groups violated antitrust laws through coordinating boycotts against X — an investigation that could help Musk, if it turns up illegal collusion. Or regulators could drop or stall the probe amid the Musk-Trump feud. Meanwhile, the clash between Musk and Trump blew up just as the Securities and Exchange Commission on Thursday was granting Musk, a longtime critic of the agency, another six weeks to respond to a January lawsuit over his purchases of Twitter stock in 2022. The agency has alleged that Musk was 11 days late to publicly disclose he had acquired a major stake in the company — a gap that allowed him to buy up shares cheaply while investors lost out on more than $150 million. How Trump's SEC handles the case has already been a question mark to many former Wall Street regulators. — Alfred Ng and Declan Harty Musk's brain-implant company Neuralink has won some key federal approvals allowing it to test its technology, but it will ultimately need Food and Drug Administration clearance for its chip to reach the market. Neuralink said in May that the company had received a breakthrough designation from the FDA for its device, which aims to restore the ability to communicate in people with severe speech impediments caused by a variety of neurological conditions or paralysis. The designation gives the company quicker access to agency feedback while trying to expedite the review process. While FDA commissioners have historically shied away from interfering in product reviews, the agency head could call for conditions to be placed on any Neuralink clearance, such as postmarketing study requirements. Commissioner Marty Makary recently unveiled a framework for approving updated Covid vaccines that sets study expectations for manufacturers who want to get their shots approved for young, healthy people. The agency green-lit the company's first clinical trial in humans in 2023. — Lauren Gardner The Trump-Musk breakup comes as Congress is considering legislation that would regulate cryptocurrencies. Musk — a longtime fan of the industry and particularly the token Dogecoin — isn't explicitly in the crypto business. But his social media company's plan to launch an 'X money' platform with Visa has sparked concerns among some lawmakers that he or another big technology firm could seek to issue a digital currency known as a stablecoin that is pegged to the value of the dollar. Lawmakers could include language in crypto legislation that would limit tech firms' ability to use stablecoins to get into financial services. That would allay fears from Democrats about digital currencies breaking down historic barriers between banking and commerce firms — but it would deliver a blow to Musk. What's more, X's payments company is poised to operate as a money transmitter business that is regulated by the Treasury Department. The company has already obtained licenses in several dozen states and has registered with Treasury's Financial Crimes Enforcement Network. — Jasper Goodman and Michael Stratford Trump's environmental regulators also have the power to obstruct one of Musk's highest-profile initiatives — his artificial intelligence company, xAI. The Memphis, Tennessee-based supercomputer behind Musk's chatbot, Grok, has a voracious appetite for electricity, and has been powered in part by natural gas turbines operating without Clean Air Act permits since June 2024. The Environmental Protection Agency has so far declined to take any action against the sprawling supercomputer facility for the huge amounts of smog-forming air pollution it's releasing. Theoretically, though, it could order xAI to shut the unpermitted turbines down. If that happens, Grok would be forced to operate on just 150 megawatts of power that xAI receives from the local electric grid — a fraction of what it needs. Musk has underscored the importance of the turbines to his operations, saying at the launch of Grok3 in February that the bot was powered by 'trailer after trailer of generators.' xAI was valued at $80 billion in March when it bought Musk's social media site X. xAI is now seeking a Clean Air Act permit for 15 of the turbines. The decision technically lies with the Shelby County Health Department, but the department has requested assistance from EPA, which is reviewing the issue. New mobile robot helps seniors walk safely and prevent falls
The demographic landscape in the U.S. is shifting rapidly, with the median age now at 38.9, almost a decade older than it was in 1980. By 2050, the population of adults over 65 is projected to surge from 58 million to 82 million, intensifying the already urgent challenge of eldercare. With falls remaining the top cause of injury among older adults, the need for innovative, tech-driven solutions has never been clearer. MIT engineers are stepping up to this challenge with E-BAR, a mobile robot designed to physically support seniors and prevent falls as they move around their homes. E-BAR, short for Elderly Bodily Assistance Robot, is not your typical assistive device. Rather than relying on harnesses or wearables, which many seniors find cumbersome or stigmatizing, E-BAR operates as a set of robotic handlebars that follow users from behind. This allows individuals to walk freely, lean on the robot's arms for support or receive full-body assistance when transitioning between sitting and standing. The robot's articulated body, constructed from 18 interconnected bars, mimics the natural movement of the human body, delivering a seamless and intuitive experience. The engineering behind E-BAR's mobility is equally impressive. The robot's 220-pound base is meticulously designed to support the weight of an average adult without tipping or slipping, and its omnidirectional wheels enable smooth navigation through tight spaces and around household obstacles. This means E-BAR can move effortlessly alongside users, providing support in real time, whether they are reaching for a high shelf or stepping out of a bathtub. What sets E-BAR apart from previous eldercare robots is its integrated fall-prevention system. Each arm is embedded with airbags made from soft, grippable materials that can inflate instantly if a fall is detected. This rapid response cushions the user without causing bruising, and, crucially, it does so without requiring the user to wear any special gear. In lab tests, E-BAR successfully supported elderly volunteers as they performed everyday tasks that often pose a risk for falls, such as bending down, stretching up or navigating the tricky edge of a bathtub. Currently, E-BAR is operated via remote control, but the MIT team is already working on automating its navigation and assistance features. The vision is for future versions to autonomously follow users, assess their real-time fall risk using machine learning algorithms and provide adaptive support as their mobility needs evolve. The E-BAR project is rooted in extensive interviews with seniors and caregivers, which revealed a strong preference for unobtrusive, non-restrictive support systems. E-BAR's U-shaped handlebars leave the front of the user completely open, allowing for a natural stride and easy exit at any time. The robot is slim enough to fit through standard doorways and is designed to blend into the home environment, making it a practical addition rather than an intrusive medical device. MIT researchers see E-BAR as part of a broader ecosystem of assistive technologies, each tailored to different stages of aging and mobility. While some devices may offer predictive fall detection or harness-based support, E-BAR's unique combination of full-body assistance, fall prevention and user autonomy addresses a critical gap for those who want to maintain independence but need occasional support. Currently, MIT's E-BAR robot is still in the prototype stage and is not yet available for consumer purchase. The research team is continuing to refine the design and aims to bring it to market in the coming years, but it could take 5–10 years before the device receives full regulatory approval and becomes commercially accessible. Looking forward, the research team is also focused on refining E-BAR's design to make it slimmer, more maneuverable and even more intuitive to use. They are also exploring ways to integrate advanced AI for real-time fall prediction and adaptive assistance, ensuring that the robot can meet users' changing needs as they age. The ultimate goal is to provide seamless, continuous support, empowering seniors to live safely and confidently in their own homes.
