IPOH - A total of 7,488 out of 14,534 individuals who were ensnared in drug abuse throughout the past year in Perak were youths, said State Communication, Multimedia and NGOs Committee chairman Mohd Azlan Helmi Helmi.
He said the statistic is quite worrying as youths represented 51.5 per cent (pct) of the total number of drug addicts recorded in Perak. Drug abuse not only hampers productivity but also has a long-term impact on the well-being of the population. - Photo courtesy of PDRM
"The 15 to 39 years old age bracket is the group most caught up in this immoral activity. And amphetamine (ATS) was the drug of choice for 47.4 per cent of addicts compared to other substances such as marijuana, opiates and psychotropic drugs," he said.
Mohd Azlan was speaking at the opening of the state Anti-Drug Day (HAD) commemoration programme at the Youth and Sports Complex (KBS) here today.
He said drug abuse not only hampers productivity but also has a long-term impact on the well-being of the population.
"Therefore, the prevention and awareness approach needs to start as early as possible and ideally it should begin at the family institution," he said.
On the commemoration, he said more than 500 people participated in the programme at KBS to provide awareness and strengthen the commitment of all parties in fighting drug abuse.
The programme featured beneficial activities such as an anti-drug slogan competition, a colouring contest, futsal tournament and an exhibition by government agencies. - BERNAMA

The report seized on the popularity of Netflix sensation "Adolescence", which highlighted some of the toxic content kids view online. Dozens arrested for Indonesian love scam ring targeting American men
DENPASAR, (Indonesia): Indonesian police have arrested dozens on the popular resort island of Bali for allegedly running a love scam syndicate targeting American men, they said Wednesday (June 11). Police made the arrests after being tipped off about suspicious activity at a rented home in Denpasar, the island's capital. A total of 38 suspects, seven of them women, were arrested. "The suspects arrested worked as operators whose job is to find the love scam victims, they targeted Americans who have a Telegram account," Bali police chief Daniel Adityajaya told a press conference. "They pretended to be women by using women's pictures and fake identity to ensnare their victims." The suspects confessed they were working for someone who controlled the business from Cambodia to lure American men to hand over sensitive information, Daniel said. They chatted up their victims through the Telegram messenger app and sent them fake links. The suspects were paid $200 each per month to steal the victims' data and information, Daniel said. Police initially detained nine suspects together, leading to the arrest of the others accused of a role in the syndicate. The suspects, all Indonesians, face up to 12 years in prison if found guilty of violating the country's electronic transaction law. Police had previously said many scammers had moved to Indonesia and other Southeast Asian countries after China cracked down on domestic networks. In 2019, Indonesian police arrested 85 Chinese nationals and six Indonesians over an online scam that tricked victims out of millions of dollars. In 2023, they arrested 88 Chinese nationals in Batam, in the Indonesian province of Riau Islands, for running a syndicate that has scammed hundreds of victims in China by luring them into sexual acts and then blackmailing them with video footage. MACC, TI-M support efforts to improve Whistleblower Protection Act
KUALA LUMPUR: The Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC) and Transparency International Malaysia (TI-M) have expressed full support for the government's ongoing efforts to improve the Whistleblower Protection Act. The MACC said the joint support was conveyed when the executive committee of TI-M, led by its president Raymon Ram, paid a courtesy call on MACC Chief Commissioner Tan Sri Azam Baki at the commission's headquarters in Putrajaya today. It said the enhancement of the Act is currently being undertaken by the Minister in the Prime Minister's Department (Law and Institutional Reform), Datuk Seri Azalina Othman Said, through the Legal Affairs Division of the Prime Minister's Department (BHEUU). During the meeting, Azam reaffirmed the commission's commitment to ensuring that the identities of whistleblowers and the information provided by them are kept confidential and not disclosed, once the whistleblower meets the conditions stipulated under the Whistleblower Protection Act 2010. 'Meanwhile, Raymon said TI-M had submitted proposals to BHEUU to review several sections of the Act that contradict other laws, which could result in the loss of protection for whistleblowers,' it said in a statement. Both parties also discussed mutual concerns, including political funding, the strengthening of the Integrity Pact in Malaysia, the implementation of the Anti-Bribery Management System (ABMS) MS ISO 37001 accreditation, and beneficial ownership declaration. 'All tenderers and companies participating in government procurement, based on the guidelines of the Companies Commission of Malaysia, are seen as capable of preventing corruption and fraud in procurement processes involving government suppliers,' the statement said.
