Prince William unveils new BBC documentary on 'most dangerous job in world'
Prince William has teamed up with his charity United for Wildlife to launch the new six-part series called 'Guardians' which will follow the lives of enivronmental rangers across the world
Prince William has recognised the sacrifices of environmental rangers across the globe ahead of a new documentary series examining "the most dangerous job in the world".
The Prince of Wales and his United for Wildlife programme today launched the six-part series titled 'Guardians', following the lives of rangers and the vital yet unseen work they do to protect our planet.
William, who helped create the programme and introduces each episode, said he hoped to help nature's wardens be "valued, respected, seen" and promote the "wonderful" regions they protect.
The series features rangers who do "one of the most dangerous jobs on the planet", said William, from safeguarding snow leopards in the Indian Himalayas, defending marine life in Mexico's Sea of Cortez, to protecting elephants and gorillas in the Central African Republic.
The prince described Sir David Attenborough as the "inspiration" and said he hoped to emulate his success in storytelling, just as the broadcaster and naturalist's films drew viewers' attention to remote parts of the globe.
Speaking this week in London ahead of the first episode being aired on BBC Earth's YouTube, William paid tribute to the 1,400 rangers who have been killed in the line of duty in the last decade - amounting to two a week.
He said: "Many people think, you know, being a soldier, being in the emergency services, that these drops are dangerous, and the lives of the line.
"I don't think people realise it's the same for these guys and girls around the world. And you know, but 1,400 rangers have died in the last 10 years. That's about two a week. And it's just they're unseen and unheard of."
He added: "Any progress, any future we want for the natural world, has to come from the ranger community being valued, respected, seen."
New six to 10-minute episodes will be unveiled each week, with first-hand accounts of the lives of rangers and nature protectors as they urgently work to conserve biodiversity and ecosystems.
William has voiced the trailer and individual episode introductions, aiming to showcase these unsung heroes and highlight how their work impacts us all.
The series follows the remarkable stories from the Central African Republic and the breathtaking Dzangha-Sangha protected area, following a reformed poacher who now dedicates his life to protecting the wildlife he once hunted.
It also coveres The Himalayas, India where high in the Spiti Valley rangers are working to bring co-existence between the snow leopards known as 'Ghosts of the Himalayas', and local communities.
Also featured is Mexico's Sea of Cortez once called 'the world's aquarium' - and the story of a reformed illegal fisherman now working to protect this threatened ecosystem.

The sister of One Direction singer Louis Tomlinson believes her mum, who died at the age of 43, 'sugarcoated' her diagnosis and never realised 'how bad' she was until near the end. Revealing all to Giovanna Fletcher on a recent episode of the Happy Mum Happy Baby podcast, Lottie acknowledged that becoming a mother herself has since changed the way she views herself and has given her confidence back. Reflecting on the past, when she would restrict herself in a bid to be slimmer, Lottie said: 'I felt like it was making me happy. "Losing the weight and feeling slimmer definitely made me feel better in myself. 'But in terms of the fillers and the beauty treatments, it was just a never-ending thing of trying to catch up with yourself. 'And, like, when you lose someone as close as your mum, it affects your confidence a lot. 'That's something I never expected, because if you think about it, your mum is the one person that cheers you on, that loves you unconditionally, that's there to give you that reassurance and support. 'So when you lose that, you kind of lose that confidence in yourself. 'So I think I was constantly chasing, trying to find that confidence, thinking I would find it in these fillers and how I looked.' Johannah had seven children - Louis, now 31, Lottie, 26, Félicité, who died at the age of 18, twins Phoebe and Daisy, 21, and twins Ernest and Doris, 11. The State of Unreal showcase has brought some major Fortnite announcements including the Squid Game and Avatar: The Last Airbender crossovers, but many players are questioning exactly what UEFN is Fortnite has made a number of announcements at this year's State of Unreal showcase – but many players are left scratching their heads about what they actually mean for the game. Despite leakers hinting that some major Fortnite news would be unveiled at the State of Unreal showcase on Tuesday, June 4, players didn't get what they were hoping for. In fact, they might have ended up more puzzled than before. As the end of the Galactic Battle season draws near, and players prepare to bid farewell to the Star Wars -themed island and board the massive Star Destroyer for the last time, anticipation for a new season is building. With the Fortnite Chapter 6 Season 4 start date looming, players are bracing themselves for a significant shake-up as they power through the last of the Galactic Battle Battle Pass before it's gone for good. However, it's not just in Battle Royale and Zero Build where we're witnessing changes, as the State of Unreal has shown – indeed, creative is set to expand even further with some major crossovers for creators that could genuinely revolutionize how the system is used. This has raised a question among players – what exactly is UEFN in Fortnite? And what role does Squid Game play in all of this? Here's what you need to know. What is UEFN in Fortnite? UEFN, more commonly known as Unreal Editor for Fortnite, is a tool that allows creators in Fortnite to design their own Islands. This gives them the opportunity to construct new games using Epic Games ' assets which players can access for free. It's a PC application designed to assist players in designing, building and publishing games directly into the Fortnite launcher, much like Roblox. The capabilities of the system are detailed on its Epic Games Store page, revealing that it can be used to create custom content with modelling and material tools, construct fresh landscapes, and utilise systems like Control Rig, MetaHuman and World Partition. What's particularly intriguing for the average player is that it employs a number of Fortnite assets including some from major companies that have collaborated with the game. Creators have been given access to structures, character models and NPCs from Lego, Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles and The Walking Dead. It's a splendid system for both players and creators, and it has helped elevate Fortnite from being a fantastic Battle Royale game to being a grand games platform. What is the Fortnite Squid Game collaboration? The State of Unreal showcase (via YouTube) revealed that a Fortnite Squid Game collaboration is on the horizon, just in time for the show's third and final season. It won't simply end with the expected cosmetics, either, as UEFN will also receive a new collection of Squid Game tools. This is an ideal partnership for the game-creation system, especially considering when the series first landed, Roblox and UEFN were inundated with imitation games hoping to engage players with Red Light, Green Light and the rest of the show's treacherous mini-games. Now creators will have the opportunity to do this all over again with officially licensed character models, buildings, and more. However, the Fortnite Squid Game collaboration isn't the only one coming to UEFN. Epic Games also unveiled that a new Avatar: The Last Airbender crossover with the tool is set for 2026, and Star Wars will follow later. The former is thrilling, but the latter is particularly groundbreaking as such a crossover will give total control of Star Wars characters to creators on a major platform. Given Disney's protectiveness of its IP, this certainly places a lot of trust in creators to do it justice. During a break in an outdoor exercise session, he promised servicemen that he would raise their accommodation concerns, stating, "I'm going to have a chat about accommodation, make sure they look at that", though he also added that being heard was a different matter. The prince was met with nothing but smiles when he inquired about accommodation from a group, prompting him to remark: "I'll take that away, a lot of smiles going on, that's all you need to say." Notably, the AAC, comprising units such as 664 Squadron, is an integral part of the British Army's combat aviation forces, employing cutting-edge aircraft like the Wildcat and Apache Attack helicopters in their mission to locate and neutralise enemy threats. In May 2024, Prince William took over as the Colonel-in-Chief of the Army Air Corps (AAC) from King Charles at the Army Aviation Centre in Middle Wallop. The King, who was the inaugural holder of the title 33 years prior, met with his eldest son in a rare joint official engagement to transfer the role last year. The AAC is Prince Harry's former unit, where he served as an Apache helicopter commander and co-pilot gunner during his second tour of Afghanistan in 2012. The decision by the King to pass the role to William was perceived as a slight to Harry when it was announced in 2023. Currently, neither the King nor William are in contact with Harry due to an ongoing Royal dispute.
