Apple to leverage AI for its upcoming battery-saving feature

GSM Arena13-05-2025

According to sources close to Bloomberg, Apple is working on an AI-powered battery-saving feature for its upcoming iOS 19. The feature will work based on the user's usage habits and optimize things in the background to extend battery life.
The AI will learn from users' behavior on the fly and reduce power consumption by optimizing apps in the background depending on the time of day. Apple is reportedly already training the AI using data collected from people's iPhones, so the system has a general idea of users' usage habits. After a while, the AI will adapt to the specific user's patterns.
Many Android smartphone OEMs have implemented the feature in the past, but it has never leveraged AI and a large data pool. So, it will be interesting to see how it will work on iOS.
Some believe Apple is implementing this feature to maintain adequate battery life on its upcoming iPhone 17 Air, if that's going to be the name, of course. Since the device will be extremely thin, the battery size will probably be pretty small, so Apple thinks it can compensate by introducing software smarts.
We might see our first glimpse of the battery life feature during this year's WWDC in June.

Helium Mobile, a T-Mobile MVNO, introduces a low-cost, worry-free plan for kids

We've already told you about Helium Mobile. The T-Mobile MVNO has a free 5G wireless plan that I use on my Pixel 6 Proso that it can become a useful smartphone again instead of having to rely on a Wi-Fi connection. Of course, Google's release of Android 16 QPR1 Beta 1.1 has also helped to make the phone feel fresh and responsive. With Helium's Zero Plan, I pay nothing for 3GB of 5G data, 100 minutes of calls, 5GB of hotspot data, and 300 texts each month. Today, Helium announced a Kids Plan that it calls Sprout. Kids get their own wireless line for only $5 per month and their parents stay in control. Helium says that 51% of children eight and younger own a mobile device and Sprout is the wireless plan made for them. The plan requires that the child use a device he or she already owns. This is a brilliant move by Helium because, in a stressful situation, the child won't have to go fumbling to find a person's number and make a call or send an emergency text on a new device. -Coco Tang, General Manager of Helium Mobile Subscribers Switching to Helium is a snap with the MVNO's Concierge Service. Helium's agents will contact your previous carrier making it easy to switch. As Helium says, Concierge Service makes the transition to a new wireless provider "smooth and disruption-free." With Sprout, parents won't have to worry about their kids running wild through the internet. Parents can "manage the account, set boundaries, approve usage, and monitor data directly from their phones." And Helium points out that unlike its Zero Plan, which is available only to those 18 years of age and older, the kids are not included in the anonymized location data that Helium collects. Sprout includes: Nationwide 5G coverage from T-Mobile 's low-band 600MHz nationwide 5G network. 's low-band 600MHz nationwide 5G network. 3GB of data + unlimited talk and text allowing the kids to make calls and texts without worrying about going over a limit. Flexible family management – Parents or guardians have control over the account which allows them to place limits on data use. Upgrade anytime to other Helium plans such as Air (10GB for $15) or Infinity (unlimited data for $30). Both plans still give parents or guardians full control over the plan. Kids can earn Cloud Store rewards which can be turned into gift cards for top national brands. Of course, the parents have the last word over which cards their children can choose. Control comes through the Helium Mobile app available for iOS and Android. Helium Mobile introduces a plan made for kids. | Image credit-Helium Mobile Sprout is the perfect first plan for kids. If you have your child wield a smartphone for emergencies or to check in with you over the course of a day, Helium's Sprout plan, priced at $5 per month, could deliver the piece of mind you want at a price that makes this a no-brainer. Samsung trolls Apple for announcing features that already exist on Samsung devices

Yesterday Apple held its big keynote at the Worldwide Developers Conference, announcing iOS 26, watchOS 26, as well as some new AI features. Samsung's US arm couldn't help but throw shade at Apple, however, for features that already exist on Samsung devices. It all started with a dig regarding Apple's massive UI redesign across all of its operating systems. Customizable apps? Floating bars? That sleek glass UI? Looks… familiar 🤔 — Samsung Mobile US (@SamsungMobileUS) June 9, 2025 Then, Samsung US moved on to live translations, which its devices have had "for a while now". New to live translations? Welcome aboard! We've been translating text and speech in real-time for a while now… #GalaxyAI — Samsung Mobile US (@SamsungMobileUS) June 9, 2025 Finally, the AI features introduced for the Apple Watches didn't escape Samsung's trolling either, see for yourself: AI is coming to your watch? Cute. Ours already knows when you're too tired to care 😴 #GalaxyAI — Samsung Mobile US (@SamsungMobileUS) June 9, 2025 It's customary for smartphone makers to pick on each other like this - Apple sometimes does it too, but during its keynotes, not on X. That said, it's also normal for companies to be inspired by what their competitors are doing (with very few exceptions - Sony?), since they don't exist in a vacuum and the market is highly competitive. But at the end of the day, we're not ones to refuse having some fun.

MediaTek Dimensity 9500's announcement date tipped

Qualcomm is unveiling the Snapdragon 8 Elite 2 in late September, and its main competitor will undoubtedly be MediaTek's Dimensity 9500. With that in mind, you may have been wondering when to expect it to be announced. According to a new rumor from the prolific Chinese leaker who goes by Digital Chat Station on Weibo, MediaTek will one-up Qualcomm by unveiling its next flagship chipset even earlier. Chinese smartphone makers are expected to then introduce their next-gen flagship devices (the ones that usually come in October to December) quite quickly after the chips take the stage - most could actually become official by the end of September. If true, September is going to be a very, very busy month in the mobile world - let's not forget Apple's new iPhones are coming then as well. So for some Android brands, their current flagship devices will only have been for sale (in China at least) for 9-10 months before their successors get introduced. It remains to be seen how the buyers of those phones will take all of this. Source (in Chinese)
