(Facebook pic) PETALING JAYA: The death of 20-year-old Maniishapriet Kaur Akhara, a University of Cyberjaya physiotherapy student, has sparked widespread calls for accountability and reforms to ensure student safety. Her death sparked an outpouring of grief and outrage online, with politicians, activists and members of the public demanding answers and justice. In a Facebook post, deputy housing and local government minister Aiman Athirah Sabu expressed her condolences and called the murder 'shocking'. 'I urge that the investigation be carried out transparently, fairly and urgently to ensure justice is upheld and the truth is revealed,' she said, adding she was also closely monitoring Sepang police for updates on the case. Maniishapriet, who hailed from Kuching, Sarawak, was found in her condominium unit in Cyberjaya with injuries on her body by a friend on Tuesday. This morning, Sepang police chief Norhizam Bahaman confirmed her death was due to blunt force trauma to the head. 'Investigations at the scene found no signs that her residence had been broken into. Checks on the victim's body found wounds on her head. 'There were no injuries consistent with rape,' he said in a statement. MIC women's leader N Saraswati said students deserve to feel safe where they live and study. 'Immediate and firm action must be taken. Let us honour her memory by demanding and pushing for better protection measures for our students,' she said. Women, family, and community development minister Nancy Shukri also visited Maniishapriet's family during the funeral proceedings at the Loke Yew Crematorium this morning. 'I extend my deepest condolences to the family on their heartbreaking loss. I trust the relevant authorities will conduct the investigation transparently and with integrity so that justice may prevail,' she said in a post on X. Meanwhile, University of Cyberjaya has faced mounting criticism on social media for its silence following Maniishapriet's death. Dozens of comments have been left on the university's official social media pages demanding accountability, with many rallying around the hashtag #justiceformaniisha. Many accused the institution of insensitivity after it posted promotional content in the hours following the incident. 'You were busy promoting the university just six hours ago. What action has been taken?' one user asked. Others described the silence as 'beyond cruel', with many users questioning the safety and management of student accommodation. * Follow us on our official WhatsApp channel and Telegram for breaking news alerts and key updates! * Do you have access to the Daily Express e-paper and online exclusive news? Ah Long Address Mistake: Three Homes Destroyed In Penang Arson
Subscribe to our FREE A devastating fire broke out on Tuesday morning at a residential area in Tasek Gelugor, Penang, destroying three houses, five cars and four motorbikes. The incident was believed to be a targeted Ah Long attack. In a Facebook post shared by He also noticed a threatening note left on the neighbour's front gate along with a bottle containing left-over petrol. The message was clear and scary: 'Pay your debt or your house will burn.' Photo: Facebook/Mohamad Asrul But the twist was, the letter was addressed to a totally different house, which was further down the street, with the borrower's full name and IC number included in it. The real problem was, the Ah Long had splashed petrol on the wrong houses. Feeling worried by the discovery, Asrul went to the police station that same morning to lodge a report. After taking his statement, the police told him to go home and wait for them to come and collect evidence. However, after hours turned into days, they allegedly never came. Turns out, the note wasn't just an empty threat At 4am on 24 June (9 days after the police report was lodged), the homes were set ablaze. Asrul and his family were asleep when they were awakened by the sounds of car horns and shaking of their gate as neighbours tried to alert them about the fire. Thanks to his neighbours' fast response, Asrul and other neighbours managed to escape safely. According to him, an explosive device was thrown into one of the houses, triggering a huge explosion. 'Someone else took the loan but we're the ones paying the price,' Asrul wrote at the end of his post, clearly frustrated with the situation. However, despite the incident, Asrul remained thankful to everyone who stepped in to help, including the firefighters, police and all the people in his neighbourhood. Photo: Facebook/Mohamad Asrul Assistant Director of the Fire and Rescue Operations Division, Pulau Pinang Fire and Rescue Department (JBPM), John Sagun Francis said that his department was alerted to the incident through an emergency call at 4.52 am. 'The fire was completely put out at 5.59 am and monitoring was completed around three hours later,' he added. However, the cause of the incident and total losses are still under investigation, as reported by Share your thoughts with us via TRP's . Govt To Expand NSRC To Cover All Cybercrimes, Establish 24/7 Response Network
KUALA LUMPUR, June 26 (Bernama) -- The MADANI Government has agreed to expand the role of the National Scam Response Centre (NSRC) to cover all forms of cybercrime, Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim announced. He said that a nationwide 24-hour response network, driven by coordination across multiple government agencies, will also be established to enhance cybercrime response capabilities. 'The strengthening of the NSRC will involve integrating local expertise, improving inter-agency coordination, and increasing human resources,' he said in a Facebook post. The Prime Minister said he had earlier chaired a Special Meeting of the National Cyber Security Committee (JKSN) to evaluate immediate measures to bolster the NSRC. Anwar revealed that since 2022, nearly 4.7 billion online scam attempts have been recorded - a staggering and worrying figure that demands urgent and coordinated action. The Prime Minister said the Home Ministry and the Royal Malaysia Police (PDRM) have been tasked with fast-tracking the implementation of the NSRC's new structure, which includes clearly defining its role to ensure it is easily accessible and understood by the public. A no wrong door approach will also be adopted to simplify the complaint and assistance process, allowing victims to seek help from any agency without being redirected, he said. 'I urge all agencies to act more proactively and think ahead to ensure comprehensive protection for the people. 'At the same time, our national cyber defence readiness must continue to be enhanced, both domestically and in collaboration with international partners,' he added.
