Sean 'Diddy' Combs' defense lawyers are set to ask jurors on Friday to clear the hip-hop mogul of sex trafficking and other criminal charges, as his closely watched trial in Manhattan comes to a close.
Combs, a former billionaire known for elevating hip-hop in American culture, has pleaded not guilty to racketeering conspiracy and two counts each of sex trafficking and transportation to engage in prostitution. If convicted on all counts, the Bad Boy Records founder faces a minimum 15-year prison term and could be sentenced to life behind bars.
During the first day of closing arguments on Thursday, a U.S. prosecutor told jurors Combs used "violence and fear" to lead a criminal enterprise that helped him subject two of his former girlfriends to sex trafficking,
"The defendant used power, violence and fear to get what he wanted," prosecutor Christy Slavik told jurors in her address. "He thought that his fame, wealth and power put him above the law."
Combs' defense lawyers acknowledge that Combs was occasionally violent in domestic relationships, but have argued that his conduct did not amount to sex trafficking because the sex acts described by prosecutors were consensual.
Over more than six weeks of testimony in Manhattan federal court, jurors heard two of Combs' former girlfriends testify that they took part in days-long, drug-fueled sex parties sometimes called "Freak Offs" with male sex workers while Combs watched, masturbated, and occasionally filmed. Combs did not testify.
The jury saw hotel surveillance footage of Combs beating one of the women in a hallway, and heard Combs' employees describe setting up hotel rooms and buying drugs for the performances.
Jurors are expected to start deliberations either late on Friday or on Monday. To convict Combs, they must vote unanimously. REUTERS

Russian missile attack kills five in Ukraine's southeast
KYIV - A Russian missile attack on Friday killed at least five people and wounded more than 20 in the industrial city of Samar in Ukraine's southeast, officials said, the second strike on the city in three days. The ceremony will have no legal status under Italian law, a senior city hall official told Reuters, suggesting that the couple may have already legally wed in the United States, avoiding the bureaucracy associated with an Italian marriage. The festivities, estimated to cost around $50 million, culminate on Saturday with a party in a former medieval shipyard where Lady Gaga and Elton John are reportedly set to perform. PHOTO: THE STAR/ASIA NEWS NETWORK 13-year-old en route to S'pore dies after being flung from car on highway in Melaka MELAKA - A 13-year-old girl was killed after being flung from a multi-purpose vehicle (MPV) and landing on the opposite lane in a road tragedy along KM189.1 of the North-South Expressway in Jasin. Jasin OCPD Supt Mohamad Rusli Mat identified the victim as Iris Sofea Mohamed Siddiq Khan, who died at the scene following the incident at 7.54am on June 27. Preliminary investigations revealed that the MPV, which was travelling from Kuala Lumpur to Singapor e, suffered a burst front right tyre. 'The 36-year-old driver subsequently lost control of the vehicle, which struck a guardrail along the expressway. The impact of the collision caused the victim to be ejected from the vehicle, landing on the opposite lane, where she was hit by another car,' he said on June 27. Supt Mohamad Rusli added that there were nine passengers in the MPV, aged between 63 and four years old, at the time of the incident. 'The deceased's 10-year-old sister sustained serious injuries, while other passengers suffered minor injuries. The drivers of both vehicles were not injured,' he said. Supt Mohamad Rusli said the incident is being investigated under Section 41(1) of the Road Transport Act 1987 for causing death by reckless or dangerous driving. Meanwhile, Melaka Health, Human Resources and Unity Committee chairman, Datuk Ngwe Hee Sem, who visited the victims, confirmed that all the injured were receiving treatment at Hospital Melaka and Hospital Jasin. 'The tragedy resulted in the death of the driver's 13-year-old daughter and serious injuries to his 10-year-old daughter, who is being treated in the red zone of Hospital Melaka,' he said.
