Impa Kasanganay enters 2025 PFL World Tournament 3 with perspective, positivity
Of course Impa Kasanganay would love to make $1 million like he did in 2023 when he won the PFL light heavyweight championship, but he's not complaining about the promotion's new tournament format this year.
Kasanganay (18-5) makes his 2025 debut Friday at PFL World Tournament 1 from Universal Studios Orlando, where he meets former Bellator title challenger Fabian Edwards (13-4) in the first round of the middleweight competition. Unlike his previous two years with the promotion, there is no regular season and having to win to earn points in hopes of making it to the playoffs.
And he relishes the straight-to-tournament format.
'For me, it's like, I've got a job to do,' Kasanganay told MMA Junkie Radio. 'I like the format because it's one and done. … It's win, and you move forward, solid. It makes it simple.'
In previous years, fighters had to fight four times in a span of roughly seven months to claim the $1 million grand prize. Now an eight-man tournament, it means only three fights – and more importantly one less weight cut – in that same timeframe, which Kasanganay certainly welcomes.
The fact that the PFL reduced the grand prize to $500,000 isn't an issue for Kasanganay, whose grateful for the opportunity to make money with each fight the longer he lasts.
'I'm stoked,' Kasanganay said. 'You get to stay active. That's what's cool about the PFL is you get to stay active and keep working and provide for yourself and your family.'
Kasanganay, 31, is 7-2 in the PFL since coming to the promotion in 2023. After claiming the 2023 title, he was runner up in 2024. This year, he returns to middleweight with a sound perspective on both the tournament and his career.
'It's just one fight at a time,' Kasanganay said. 'You don't get to fight forever. So I just look at it like I get this time right now, and I need to make the most of it.'
He continued, 'All the focus is on this fight. I've been through this before. Of course you always have your eyes on the rise, and you're grateful for what you could do, all the other bonuses that come with it. But I really do live my life day to day. You're never promised tomorrow, and you don't get to fight forever. One day these interviews won't happen, so I'm just enjoying today for today. I know on fight day, I'm preparing for the victory. That's what I'm looking forward to, but I'm literally just enjoying every single day.'

Heavyweight Drama: Jones vs. Ngannou 'Biggest Fight in UFC History'
Heavyweight Drama: Jones vs. Ngannou 'Biggest Fight in UFC History' originally appeared on Athlon Sports. While heavyweight MMA legend Francis Ngannou left the UFC on bad terms, there have been rumblings of his potential return to the organization. Recently, his coach Eric Nicksick even hinted that he might be interested in coming back to fight for Dana White, given the UFC heavyweight division's stagnancy towards the top of the rankings. With Jon Jones hinting at retirement rather than face Tom Aspinall, the heavyweight division has been a mess, and the anticipation for a Ngannou return could revitalize a tired narrative of Jones ducking Aspinall. Advertisement The MMA world is again buzzing over a potential superfight between Jon Jones and Francis Ngannou, with UFC veterans Kamaru Usman and Henry Cejudo declaring it the "biggest fight in UFC history" on a recent episode of the Pound 4 Pound podcast. I think this is the biggest fight that you can make right now." However, UFC CEO Dana White has shut down the idea, insisting that interim champion Tom Aspinall is next in line for Jones. Advertisement "It's Aspinall's fight," White declared, dismissing Ngannou's return as unlikely. "I don't have Ngannou under contract, and Aspinall is the guy." This stance is the polar opposite of PFL founder Donn Davis, who proposed a "winner takes all" co-promotion in a post on X (formerly Twitter), offering to let the victorious fighter's promotion claim all event profits. Meanwhile, Aspinall remains in limbo, waiting for Jones to commit to their unification bout. With Jones seemingly more interested in Ngannou, the UFC faces a dilemma of forcing Jones to face Aspinall or risk losing the biggest money fight in MMA to a rival promotion. For Jones, it's a chance to cement his legacy against a fellow all-time great. For Ngannou, it's an opportunity to prove he never needed the UFC to dominate. And for fans, it's the dream matchup that's been five years in the making. As Usman put it, this isn't just another fight—it's history. PFL announces title eliminator for Usman Nurmagomedov; Paul Hughes calls out 'rage bait'
PFL will determine the next title challenger for lightweight champion Usman Nurmagomedov this month, much to the dismay of Paul Hughes. The promotion announced on Friday that a lightweight title eliminator between Mansour Barnaouri and Archie Colgan has been added to its 2025 PFL World Tournament 6 event on June 20, which takes place at INTRUST Bank Arena in Wichita, Kan. (ESPN, ESPN+). Advertisement According to the announcement post, the winner will be granted a fight against undefeated 155-pound Champions Series titleholder Nurmagomedov (19-0), who hasn't competed since a thrilling victory over Hughes (14-2) in January. The news seemingly came as a surprise and frustration to Hughes, who called for a rematch with Nurmagomedov after a quick knockout win over Bruno Miranda at 2025 PFL Europe 1 in Belfast in May. He quickly replied to the announcement post, labeling it as "rage bait." Barnaouri (22-6) is coming off a third-round submission of surging prospect Alfie Davis in November, which came after a first-roudn finish of Yusuke Yachi in May. Colgan (11-0), meanwhile, has put together an undefeated career so far that is highlighted by wins over former Bellator title contender Emmanuel Sanchez and UFC veteran Thibault Gouti. The latest lineup for 2025 PFL World Tournament 6 now includes: Gadzhi Rabadanov vs. Kevin Lee Liz Carmouche vs. Elora Dana Mansour Barnaoui vs. Archie Colgan Mando Gutierrez vs. Justin Wetzell Marcirley Alves da Silva vs. Jake Hadley Alfie Davis vs. Brent Primus Jena Bishop vs. Katerina Shakalova Sarvadzhon Khamidov vs. Magomed Magomedov Antonio Caruso vs. Vinicius Cenci Darragh Kelly vs. Chuka Willis Lazaro Dayron vs. Matheus Mattos Ilara Joanne vs. Saray Orozco Alan Dominguez vs. Nick Meck This article originally appeared on MMA Junkie: PFL announces Nurmagomedov title eliminator; Hughes reacts
