Air India flight returns to Delhi after captain suspects landing gear issue mid-air
NEW DELHI: Close on the heels of the mishap involving an Air India flight from Ahmedabad to London Gatwick, a domestic flight of the airline carrying 168 passengers developed a technical issue immediately after take-off from Delhi to Vadodara on Sunday evening. It had to make an emergency landing at Delhi. According to flight tracking website FlightAware, AI 819, an A321neo, had a delayed departure of 6:51 p.m. from Terminal 3 of the Indira Gandhi International Airport (IGI) instead of the scheduled departure of 6:25 p.m. An airline source told this reporter, "The flight had taken off from IGI when the captain suspected an issue with the landing gear within a few minutes of being airborne. As a matter of abundant caution, he decided to return back." The flight returned to IGI by 7:20 p.m. "Multiple safety checks were carried out as soon as it returned. Everything was found to be alright," the source added. Passengers were given the option of rescheduling their journey on other flights at no extra cost or cancelling their tickets. AI 819 is slated to depart to Vadodara on Monday morning.

Vadodara: As the bodies of the victims of the ill-fated Air India flight began arriving in Anand from Ahmedabad, a pall of gloom descended over the NRI-dominated towns and villages of central Gujarat on Sunday. At least 33 passengers from this region had boarded the doomed flight. In the quiet village of Ramnagar in Anand taluka, relatives and villagers gathered to mourn the loss of Mahendra Vaghela. He had boarded the flight on Thursday afternoon, filled with excitement for his first-ever trip to London, where he was eager to meet his newborn granddaughter. On Sunday, his family performed his final rites in the very village where he had shared his hopes. Similar scenes of sorrow unfolded in other parts of the district. In Piploi village of Khambhat and in Khambholaj, families prepared for the funerals of Mukund Patel, 65, and Akash Purohit, 25. Their mortal remains arrived from Ahmedabad in ambulances. Patel was headed to London to reunite with his wife, son, and daughter-in-law. He never made it. Purohit, meanwhile, had flown in to be with his ailing father, Nilesh Purohit, who was hospitalised.
