Judge Ema Aitken's behaviour at NZ First event to be reviewed by Judicial Conduct Panel

The government has confirmed a Judicial Conduct Panel will look into the behaviour of Acting District Court judge Ema Aitken.
She is
accused of
interrupting a New Zealand First function at the exclusive Northern Club in Auckland in November, allegedly saying leader Winston Peters was lying.
She argues she did not recognise Mr Peters' voice and did not know it was a political event.
The Judicial Conduct Commissioner in January recommended a panel be set up to look into the alleged misconduct.
Judge Aitken
challenged that recommendation
through a judicial review - saying there was insufficient reason provided for a panel and it was unclear what the scope of its work would be measured against - but
it failed
.
Justice Minister Paul Goldsmith will set up the panel to avoid any perception of bias by the Attorney-General Judith Collins.
It will consist of two judges and a layperson, and will write a report on whether it would be justified to have Judge Aitken removed.

Embassy of Israel in Wellington closes amid international conflict

The closures comes as tensions remain high in the region - Israel launched an attack on Iranian nuclear and military facilities on Friday, which Iran responded to with the launch of 100 drones. The Embassy of Israel - on Brandon Street in Wellington - services Tonga, Samoa, Cook Islands and Niue, as well as New Zealand. It also operates a consulate office in Auckland. A message on the embassy's website announced the decision: "In light of recent developments, Israeli missions around the world will be closed and consular services will not be provided," it said. "An online form is available for Israelis abroad to report their location and current status." The message also issued general safety guidelines for Israelis abroad - encouraging them to avoid displaying Jewish or Israeli symbols in public spaces and avoid attending large gatherings or events associated with Israel or Jewish communities. An 'unpublish' date on the message indicated it was intended to appear on the website until the end of July. RNZ has contacted the embassy for comment. The move comes as part of a global shutting of Israeli embassies. Israel's embassy in Sweden said the country would close its diplomatic missions around the world and that consular services would not be provided at about 11pm on Friday night (NZ), Reuters reported. Minister of Foreign Affairs Foreign Minister Winston Peters' visit to Indonesia today has secured tangible progress in New Zealand's relationship with Southeast Asia's most populous nation. 'Indonesia is an indispensable partner for New Zealand,' Mr Peters says. 'Demonstrating our commitment to the relationship, this is our fourth visit to Indonesia in the past 18 months, including for President Prabowo's inauguration. 'We are pleased to have made tangible, concrete progress today across the Indonesia relationship, which will deliver benefits for the New Zealand and Indonesian people.' Mr Peters, alongside Indonesian Foreign Minister Sugiono, announced in Jakarta today: the conclusion of a cooperation arrangement on halal products, which will facilitate halal food trade between New Zealand and Indonesia; the signing of an enhanced education cooperation arrangement, to facilitate student and research exchanges; an increase from 45 to 70 in the annual number of scholarships for Indonesian students to study in New Zealand; and a port visit by HMNZS Te Kaha to Jakarta later this month. 'By working more closely together, New Zealand and Indonesia are fostering mutual economic growth, deepening regional cooperation, and strengthening the connections between our people. 'The arrangement concluded today on halal is particularly noteworthy. Indonesia is recognising New Zealand's domestic processes for certification of halal products. This will improve access for New Zealand meat and dairy into the world's largest Muslim country. 'We are also pleased that the new arrangement on education will spur closer student and research exchanges.' Mr Peters arrives back in New Zealand tomorrow, having completed a three-country tour of France (for the Pacific-France Summit and the UN Ocean Conference), Italy and Indonesia.

PM to visit China and Europe, will meet Xi Jinping
Prime Minister Christopher Luxon will travel to the country's largest trading partner next week, before moving on to Europe. He will be joined by a delegation of senior New Zealand business leaders in China's Shanghai and Beijing from June 17 to June 20. He will meet senior officials including President Xi Jinping. The visit would focus on growing trade, which was worth over $38 billion last year, as well as also look to strengthen education and tourism links and to maximise opportunities for New Zealand businesses. Luxon said China was a "vital part of our economic story" as New Zealand's largest trading partner, source of international students and third-largest tourism market. "New Zealand is a trusted supplier of safe, high-quality food and beverage products to Chinese consumers. It is an important market, and I look forward to doing what I can to support Kiwi businesses to thrive. ADVERTISEMENT "This visit is about backing the recovery of international education and tourism and putting New Zealand front and centre as a world-class destination for travel, study, and long-term connection." The Prime Minister will meet China's top leadership, including President Xi Jinping and Premier Li Qiang, to discuss the comprehensive bilateral relationship and key regional and global issues.
