Play-fight claim dad jailed for murdering daughter
A father has been jailed for at least 15 years for murdering his daughter after the jury rejected his claim he had killed her in a play-fight.
Scarlett Vickers, 14, bled to death at her home in Darlington after being stabbed deep in the chest with a kitchen knife by her father Simon Vickers, 50, in July.
Vickers had claimed the fatal injury was "a freak accident" caused while they were "mucking about", but jurors at Teesside Crown Court found him guilty of murder with a majority verdict.
Jailing Vickers for life with a minimum term, Mr Justice Cotter said the killer had never been truthful about the "loss of temper" that turned a "happy family night into tragedy".
The court heard Vickers' partner and Scarlett's mother Sarah Hall, who was also present when she was killed, was "resolute" in her belief that he was innocent.
Scarlett suffered an 4in-deep (11cm) wound to her heart in the kitchen of her family home on Geneva Road on the evening of 5 July, her murder trial had heard.
Both her father and mother claimed the injury was inflicted accidentally but a pathologist said it was "practically impossible" for it to have been caused by anything other other a knife being held firmly in a hand.
At the sentencing hearing, prosecutor Mark McKone KC revealed Vickers had a previous conviction from 1993 for wounding with intent after he slashed a man's face with a Stanley knife, for which the then 19-year-old got two years' detention, as well as some dishonesty offences.
Mr McKone said Vickers' account of what happened to Scarlett was "inconsistent" with the pathologist's findings.
In mitigation, Nicholas Lumley KC said Ms Hall and Vickers' parents remained "resolute in their belief" he "did not intend Scarlett any harm".
Mr Lumley said: "None of them can in fact believe he is now to be known as Scarlett's murderer."
Ms Hall had previously told jurors she was standing by her partner of 27 years and was adamant he would never have deliberately harmed their daughter.
Scarlett's parents had said they were all "mucking about" and throwing grapes at each other in the kitchen while Ms Hall was making spaghetti Bolognese.
Ms Hall had told police and paramedics she had got the knife out to cut garlic bread and placed them next to some tongs.
Vickers told the court he swiped a pair of tongs towards Scarlett which must have caught a knife, which he had not seen.
He said he did not know what had actually happened but thought the knife had got caught against a hot plate and Scarlett had run on to the 8in-long (20cm) blade.
Prosecutors said that was extremely unlikely with forensic pathologist Dr Jennifer Bolton concluding Vickers would probably have to have been holding the knife in his hand for it to cause the devastating injury to Scarlett.
Vickers had said he bore "moral responsibility" for killing his daughter but claimed it had been a "freak accident" in the confines of their small kitchen.
Jurors spent more than 13 hours deliberating before reaching a majority agreement, with 10 finding Vickers guilty of murder.
Mr Justice Cotter said he had "no doubt" Vickers had been holding the knife and the killer, who was the only person who actually knew what occurred, had "never given a truthful explanation of what happened".
The judge said Vickers' account was "unconvincing and wholly implausible", telling him: "Your beloved daughter deserved the truth, you have not given it."
Scarlett was a "normal, healthy young girl with a long life ahead of her" which was "cut short" by her father, the judge said, adding: "It went from an ordinary, happy family Friday night into tragedy within seconds due to what must have been [Vickers'] loss of temper."
Mr Justice Cotter said there was a "momentary but devastating act of anger" that had "stolen one young, precious life".
The court heard Vickers had smoked cannabis and drunk wine during the evening, with police noting he was slurring his speech when they arrived.

Man accused of baby murder found gaming by police
A man was found gaming on his phone by police after shaking his baby daughter so hard he caused "catastrophic" brain injuries, a court has heard. Thomas Holford, 24, is accused of murdering Everleigh Stroud, who was rushed to Queen Elizabeth the Queen Mother Hospital in Margate, Kent, on 21 April 2021. She remained there in a vegetative state until she died, aged 14 months, on 27 May 2022. Holford, of Ramsgate, who pleaded guilty to manslaughter in November last year, denies murder and causing actual bodily harm. On Tuesday, jurors at Canterbury Crown Court heard that Everleigh also had bone fractures, bruising to her face, atrophy to her eyes leading to her going blind and injuries to her anus. Prosecuting, Eloise Marshall KC told the court: "There is no dispute those injuries were inflicted by Thomas Holford," adding that they had been caused deliberately. At the time of the incident, Holford was living with his then 16-year-old girlfriend and her parents at an address in Wallwood Road, Ramsgate. His partner had stayed with a friend on 20 April to celebrate her birthday, leaving Holford to care for Everleigh overnight, the court heard. The next morning Everleigh's grandmother Kelly Stroud called 999, telling the operator the five-week-old baby "looked like she was in agony" and was unresponsive and barely breathing. Police attending the scene remarked that Holford appeared to be in a "good mood" as he played games on his phone while his daughter was being rushed to hospital. They also noted a bag of herbal cannabis and a grinder next to a baby's bottle in the room where he had slept with Everleigh. Ms Marshall added Holford "showed little emotion" and did not answer the majority of police questions when interviewed, except to say that he would not do anything to hurt his daughter. Shocking footage captures the moment a hired gunman fires at homes amid a bitter gangland feud. Kieran Morgan, 30, was caught on camera wielding a sawn-off double-barrelled shotgun opening fire in broad daylight and in the early hours in another appalling attack. He also fired a shotgun in a busy takeaway in a third shooting committed within the space of a few weeks. Zaki Shazad, 22, was the 'organiser' of the attacks, but was operating on behalf of unknown more senior underworld figures, Minshull Street Crown Court heard. A judge said the shootings had 'all the hallmarks of a dispute between serious organised criminals'. Miraculously, no one was hurt in any of the incidents, which happened in March and April 2023. Now Morgan has been sentenced to 18 years in jail, and Shazad to 16 years in prison. The first shooting happened on March 12 on Doric Avenue in Heald Green, Stockport. Morgan, with another man, was wearing a mask and dark clothing when he approached and fired a shotgun at the house. He then threw a homemade explosive device towards the property, but it bounced off a wall before Morgan picked it up and threw it at a higher trajectory where it 'went off like a firework'. Greater Manchester Police said that forensic testing later the device contained hydrochloric acid. Morgan then fled the scene in a Mercedes. The second shooting happened in broad daylight at a house on Wilmslow Road in Heald Green on April 21, when a family including a child were packing up their car for Eid celebrations. Morgan arrived at the scene in the afternoon with a hold-all bag, containing the shotgun. Wearing a face mask, he opened fire towards the property. No-one was hurt but there was damage caused to the house. The third shooting took place at the Drip burger bar on Kingsway nine days later, on April 30. Morgan entered the restaurant, immediately firing one shot before firing another soon after. One hit a wall next to a TV, and the other hit the counter. Staff were behind the counter at the time and customers were in the front of the restaurant. Prosecutor David Farley said those inside were 'clearly and understandably terrified'. Morgan fled on a bike. Shazad was the 'organiser' of the shootings. Messages sent between the pair on Snapchat show that Morgan was to be paid £1,000 by him for the 'jobs'. Shazad, of Ranford Road, Levenshulme, was found guilty of conspiring to possess a firearm with intent to endanger life. Morgan, of Petworth Avenue, Chadderton, pleaded guilty to the same offence. Police said that the three shootings were linked after officers received intelligence. They trawled through CCTV footage which helped to identify Morgan, who was seen wearing a Canada Goose jacket. He later posted a picture of himself on social media wearing the same jacket. His face was also seen on one CCTV clip after he had removed a balaclava. Shazad was also sentenced after he was caught trying to smuggle in cannabis to a relative who was in HMP Berwyn in North Wales. He pleaded guilty to conveying a list A article into prison and possessing cannabis. Defending Morgan, Keith Harrison said the defendant has suffered from 'recurring mental health problems'. For Shazad, David Bentley said that he was involved in assisting Morgan, but that he was not the 'Mr Big'. After the hearing, Detective Inspector Lee Newburn, of GMP, said: 'Violence, particularly this kind of revenge violence, will not be tolerated on the streets of Manchester. We have seen two dangerous individuals locked up for their parts in a number of firearms discharges targeting properties where innocent people were present. 'It is miraculous that no-one was seriously injured during these firearms discharges, but they could very easily have been. One of the victims of these shootings has described to me how scared she now is to go out in public and just how shaken she is about what happened. Nobody should be made to feel like this. 'We continue to work very closely with the communities in and around Greater Manchester to ensure that we protect them from this kind of violence, and we are grateful for the intelligence that we receive from them in relation to illegal activity on a daily basis. 'We also work closely with the Greater Manchester Violence Reduction Unit (VRU), which is a multi-agency team we are part of, and we seek to prevent violence from occurring by addressing underlying issues and educating those who may be at risk of re-offending. 'We do this by providing valuable input in prevention work that our partners are carrying out on an ongoing basis, working behind the scenes to manage serious incidents before they occur. Murder suspects remanded in custody accused of killing boy, 16
Two men charged with murdering a 16-year-old pedestrian in a hit-and-run and three counts of attempted murder have appeared in court. Zulkernain Ahmed, 20, and Armaan Ahmed, 26, were not asked to enter any pleas when they were remanded in custody at Sheffield Magistrates' Court accused of killing Abdullah Yaser Abdullah Al Yazidi. The teenager was walking along Staniforth Road in the Darnall area of Sheffield last Wednesday when he was hit by an Audi car and suffered fatal injuries. Police said officers understood that the Audi had driven towards three electric bikes, colliding with one rider, an 18-year-old man who suffered serious but non life-threatening injuries. District Judge James Gould was told that the two defendants are both charged with the same offences, all alleged to have been committed on Wednesday June 4. The judge told Ahmed and Ahmed, who appeared alongside each other in the glass-fronted dock: 'The next hearing in your case in respect of all of these charges is the 10th of June at the crown court in Sheffield. 'You have no right to apply for bail at this stage and accordingly you are remanded in custody and you will appear tomorrow at the Crown Court.' During the three-minute hearing on Monday, the men, both of Locke Drive, Darnall, spoke only to give their names, dates of birth and address. Details of the attempted murder charges were not read to the defendants, who were both represented by the same defence lawyer. Relatives of Abdullah said last week that he had recently arrived in the UK from Yemen 'for a better future' and was devoted to his family. He arrived in the UK two or three months ago, and was enjoying learning English ahead of starting at college in September. Abdullah's relative Saleh Alsirkal said: 'His dad brought him over to change his life, to get a better future for his son, but this has happened and destroyed everything.' Mr Alsirkal added that Abdullah was a 'kind boy' who just wanted to look after his family, including his three sisters. Two people, a man aged 46 and a 45-year-old woman, arrested on suspicion of assisting an offender, have both been bailed pending further inquiries, police said.
