Fishing ban lifted on Blackpool park lake after birds entangled
A fishing ban on a park lake in Lancashire has been lifted, but only within new designated areas.Angling was suspended at Stanley Park lake in Blackpool on 1 September over fears birds were becoming entangled in tackle.A public consultation was carried out between 31 March and 11 May and received more than 1,000 submissions.After considering them, the council said it would work with the Friends of Stanley Park, the Angling Trust and the angling community to establish a Stanley Park Fishing Club, who will ultimately manage fishing on the lake.
'Park used by many'
Fishing will be allowed within a "clearly signposted" designated area, the council said, which would "help minimise the risk to wildlife and allow fishing activity to be managed more effectively".Nigel Patterson, chair of Friends of Stanley Park, said: "The park is used by many people for many different purposes. "We know it is a delicate balancing act ensuring that everyone can enjoy the park without impacting on others. "We are pleased that the council has come to this conclusion and look forward to working with them to establish a formal fishing club."

Battle of Arnhem veteran becomes MBE days before 100th birthday
A 99-year-old who fought in the Battle of Arnhem said it is important for Second World War veterans to be honoured as 'there's not many of us left'. Geoffrey Roberts, from Peterborough, was made a Member of the Order of the British Empire (MBE) for services to the commemoration of the Battle of Arnhem and to charity by the Princess Royal at Buckingham Palace on Thursday. Mr Roberts, who turns 100 on Saturday told the PA news agency: 'I'm surprised actually, I don't know what I got it for, I didn't do anything. 'When I saw the letter I thought someone was kidding me, I didn't have a clue, it was the last thing on my mind. I was very shocked and very overwhelmed.' Asked how important it is that veterans continue to be recognised, he said: 'It's very important, there's not many of us left, so it's very important especially for the ones who didn't come home. 'The heroes are lying in a cemetery, I was lucky, I turned left when I should have turned right so I'm still here.' Mr Roberts, who was born in the Chelsea Barracks in London in 1925, signed up in 1942. On September 17 1944, he flew into the Netherlands as part of Operation Market Garden – depicted in the 1977 Hollywood film A Bridge Too Far – which saw 35,000 British, American and Polish troops parachute or glide behind German lines. Mr Roberts was captured on September 26, with a German officer giving him some cigarettes and telling him, 'for you, the war is over'. He was sent to a prisoner of war camp and put to work in a coal mine until the end of the war.

Eight people rescued from Wolverhampton fire
Eight people, a dog and three cats were evacuated from a house fire in people were taken to hospital for treatment for smoke inhalation after emergency services were called to Blakely Avenue before 15:10 BST on firefighters attended the scene where the blaze burnt through the two-storey Midlands Fire Service said the flames caused extensive damage to the first floor and roof. The service said there was also damage to the roof of a property next door. It said: "A structural engineer attended the scene and worked with representatives from Wolverhampton Council who boarded the property and installed a perimeter fence, due to the extent of the damage."Crews returned for two overnight operations to monitor for hotspots. Hundreds of 'love locks' to be removed from Pero's Bridge
Padlocks left on a city centre footbridge as a romantic gesture are to be removed due to fears they are too is estimated the so-called love locks on Pero's Bridge in Bristol weigh up to three tonnes, the Local Democracy Reporting Service City Council has said it will remove the padlocks before Bristol Harbour Festival, which is due to take place in mid-July."The team is working on a solution where we can place the locks in a nearby structure of some sort," said the council's management of place director Patsy Mellor. The council cleared the bridge of padlocks about a decade ago, but people attached new ones and it was covered again within a few years. Pero's Bridge opened in 1999 and links Queen Square and Millennium Square. It was named after Pero Jones, who was enslaved in Bristol in the 18th 2023, campaigners launched a bid to remove the locks, saying they jarred with the name commemorating a slave.
