Dad stabs wife and two kids to death hours before son's graduation

A dad stabbed his entire family to death then turned the knife on himself just hours before his son was due to celebrate his High School graduation.
Jeremy Koch, 42, killed his wife Bailey, 41, and sons Hudson and Asher, aged 18 and 16. He then turned the blade on himself on Saturday, after he was released from a mental hospital and just hours before son's graduation.
His partner's family have blamed his "sick mind" for the crime.
Police with the Dawson County Sheriff's Office, in Nebraska, were dispatched to the home in rural Johnson Lake and found four bodies inside the property.
All members of the family were found with stab wounds, according to police.
The Nebraska State Patrol (NSP) said in a statement that it is believed Koch "killed each of his sons...and his wife...before taking his own life."
A knife was found at the scene.
Police said a homicide investigation is being carried out to learn the circumstances of the events leading up to the killing.
Lane and Peggy Kugler, the dad and mother of Bailey and the grandparents of the two children shared a heartfelt Facebook tribute to their daughter.
They added: "Jeremy had been fighting mental illness for many, many years. His depression had turned into psychosis. It was not Jeremy that committed this horrific act. It was a sick mind.
"Bailey, Jeremy and the boy's faith was very strong. It really helped them through the worst of times. We find strength in our belief that heaven now has four new angels sitting at the right hand of God. They are together and Jeremy's sickness is gone.
"Bailey fought so hard to help him and she and her sons lived in fear of the possibility of losing her husband and their father to mental illness for many years.
'They never knew when he would be in a manic state (super high) or horribly depressed (super low), unable to function normally.
"Bailey fought so hard to bring attention to those who needed help.
'She was a huge advocate for mental health. She spent countless hours on their Facebook page, Anchoring Hope for Mental Health: Jeremy & Bailey Koch.
'If you go to that page, you can read about how so many people thanked her for her open and honest writing about mental health."
The couple continued: "Bailey and Jeremy spent years and years seeking help and answers to Jeremy's condition. Doctor after doctor, hospital after hospital, medication after medication, therapy after therapy. Treatment after treatment.
"What we have learned through all of this is that every single person in the mental health care industry try so hard to help people. Every single one of them genuinely cares for those that need help. From those at the front desk, to the doctors that prescribe treatment, to the nurses that carry out doctor's orders, to the custodians that keep things clean and useful."
They then railed against the state of mental health in the US, branding it "a catastrophe" and "getting worse." According to the National Institute of Mental Health, in 2022 there were an estimated 15.4 million adults aged 18 or older in the US with serious mental illness.
Hudson had been due to graduate from Cozad High School.
A statement shared by the school district on Sunday said: "In light of yesterday's tragedy, we understand that some students may be experiencing some difficulties. The high school commons will be open for students this afternoon from 2:00 - 4:00 p.m. We will have school staff and counsellors available for support. We will also have support available for students and staff when school resumes on Monday."
"The investigation remains ongoing," NSP added. "The Nebraska State Patrol, the Dawson County Sheriff's Office, Eustis Fire & Rescue, and the Dawson County Attorney extend condolences to all, across multiple communities, who will be affected by this incident."

They decided to investigate a suspect believed to be armed at 9.50pm. The suspect fled on foot into a nearby apartment as cops ran behind, according to Chicago Police Department Supt. Larry Snelling. When police entered the apartment, another person pointed a rifle at them. An officer discharged his weapon during the confrontation leading Rivera to be shot, Snelling said. As she was being transported to the local hospital, the police vehicle reportedly caught fire and as a result, Rivera had to be put in another car, according to Snelling. She was pronounced dead at the hospital, police said. Another officer suffered a wrist injury, requiring hospitalization, according to Fox 32 Chicago. Dozens of police officers and firefighters paid their respects, walking in procession at 3am from the hospital to the Cook County Medical Examiners Office. He added: 'She was a hero, and she lost her life tragically doing the job that she loved. 'That was one of the things that her mother said, she loved her job, and the way that she worked.' In an Instagram post, the Chicago Fire Department posted a picture of the tragic officer, saying she 'made the ultimate sacrifice in service' to the city. He added that 'several individuals" are in custody, as three weapons were recovered from the scene. The head of the Federation Against Copyright Theft said people who use Fire Sticks for illegal streaming also risk identity theft, fraud and damage to their TVs and tech thanks to malware. The criminals who sell you the pirate services could even access any camera or microphone attached to your TV or Amazon devices - recording you and your family in your home without you knowing. An investigation by The Mirror found tens of thousands of adverts for 'pirate' services openly posted on Facebook. Many are for doctored Fire Sticks which offer bundles of thousands of channels for a few pounds a month. One UK mobile number is being used across 800 Facebook Marketplace ads for Fire Stick 'packages' for as little as £6. Customers are urged to contact the criminals via WhatsApp, and the adverts are posted by over 100 different Facebook users, all accounts created in the last few months, and located across the country. One seller is offereing 'All Sky channels, all sports channels, all football events, Netflix, HBO, Disney +, Amazon Prime and Apple' for as little as £2.50 a month. Prices started at £35 for a six month subscription to £150 for a five-year deal. A football fan wanting to follow all the Premier League action legally would need to pay nearly £50 a month for the cheapest Sky, TNT and Prime deals. Our crooked seller claimed to be from a company called IPTV, claiming: 'It's [an] online service to provide channels on fire stick, smart TVs, android TVs, mobile phone as well. We can provide subscriptions to other countries like Australia, USA and Canada.' Article continues below In January, a man streaming illegal TV to thousands from his home in Birmingham was jailed for two years. Criminals are also harvesting the personal details of thousands of their customers, including their card payment information. Kieron Sharp, chairman of the Federation Against Copyright Theft, said that in the last five years, FACT has been involved in 23 prosecutions leading to 36 criminals being jailed for an average of nearly three years each. In January, Sunny Kumar Kanda from Halifax, West Yorks, was jailed for two years at York Crown Court for supplying modified Fire Sticks through a Facebook group with nearly 4,000 members. In December, FACT led a two-week crackdown with police from 15 forces which targeted 30 illegal services. Kieron said: 'This has been a problem forever, since the days of pirated video cassettes and DVDs. But the rise of streaming has made things easier for the criminal in the same way as it has made things easier for the legal consumer. Is it any more of a problem than it was years ago? That's very difficult to say. There's no complete picture of the landscape.' The Intellectual Property Office has estimated that 6.2m Brits access illegally streamed TV and 3.9m people watch pirated live sport. Kieron said: 'We have adopted the attitude over the years that we would rather not criminalise the end user. 'If we take out a gang and they have a customer database, we would normally write to the consumers on that customer list telling them 'What you are doing is breaking the law and you will have to stop'. We would like to think that they would start paying for that content. 'But it is entirely possible that consumers could get swept up in our investigations. It would be a discussion for everybody involved in the business to see if that is an area that we would want to go down. It could happen, it really could. I would never say to any of the consumers through the messaging that we do that they are not going to get prosecuted because that just isn't correct.' When 29-year-old illegal Fire Stick seller Jonathan Edge, from Liverpool, was jailed for more than three years in November, he was also sentenced to two years and three months in prison for personally accessing and viewing the pirated content he distributed. FACT said watching an illegal stream was an offence under the Fraud Act 2006, with a maximum penalty of five year's imprisonment. Fraudsters can also raid your bank account, steal your identity and even hijack your camera and microphone. 'There is a risk from using these devices, it is not just us saying this,' Kieron said. 'People should be warned about this. There's a real risk of having your identity stolen or similar. If you give over your credit card details, you are giving them to criminals. 'They could get access to the camera on your TV, if it has one, or microphone. There is no safety or security with what you are getting with these modified devices. Some people set them up just to get your personal details.' A recent report by Enders Analysis found three in five who used a physical device for piracy in the last 12 months used a Fire Stick, according to Sky. Amazon said it had made changes to Fire TV to make it harder to stream pirated content and that it warned customers against 'sideloaded apps '. An Amazon spokesperson said: 'Pirated content violates our policies regarding intellectual property rights, and compromises the security and privacy of our customers. Article continues below 'We remain vigilant in our efforts to combat piracy and protect customers from the risks associated with pirated content, which includes prohibiting apps that infringe upon the rights of third parties in our Appstore, and warning customers of the risks associated with installing or using apps from unknown sources.'
