Quarterbacks in Calgary Stampeders camp: Vernon Adams Jr. leads the way

But if anybody can, Adams, who is known for his game-breaking ability and leadership, can catch that up pretty quickly.

'Honestly, this was the quickest off-season I've had,' Adams said. 'You know, I think it was because I was so excited, and I would always talk to my receivers and even the offensive line, at times, and just tell them, 'I'm itching, guys — like I can't wait to get out there. So … yeah … I'm just happy to be here and get back to work.'

Before Adams was acquired, it looked like Walker was going to be fast-tracked to the starting QB job in Calgary.

He agreed last fall to come to the Stamps in a trade with the Toronto Argonauts after playing in 21 NFL games — starting nine combined with the Carolina Panthers and the Cleveland Browns — from 2020-23.

'P.J. came up here last year, which gave him a head-start,' said Dickenson, of the New Jersey native. 'He left his kid and his wife back home. I think he really wants to make it worth something.
Article content
'And that's what I'm excited for our team about these quarterbacks, because I feel like they've got the right things in their heart and they're here for the right reasons.'

He's talking, too, of Love, another Cali QB who was signed this spring after a one game-start with the UFL's Memphis Showboats last year and nine game-starts with the USFL's Michigan Panthers in 2023.
Article content
'They both played professional football, so it's not like they're rookies,' said Dickenson of Walker and Love. 'P.J. has played a couple, three, four years in the NFL, and Josh has played a lot of big games, as well, and has played professional football for multiple years. He's committed to the CFL … I feel like he can be a good player in our league.
Article content
'So … yes, they're new and they were not with us, but these are not rookie type of guys. They expect to play well, and they expect to make great calls and the right decisions. They're just looking for an opportunity.'
Article content
That chance, however, is likely limited with Adams brought on to become the face of the franchise.
Article content
Still, their effort so far proves they aren't shying away from the situation.

'It's great — competition is everything, competition is king …' Walker said. 'When you come out here and you compete every day, it brings the best out of every player. So for me, it's just come out here and compete at a high level. I got a you-versus-you mentality, so it's me-versus-myself, and I'm just going to go out and compete.'

With his resumé, though, Walker is likely to push him. And Love has similar solid credentials, too.

But what of returnee Bonner, who's been hyped as a strong leader himself in the huddle? It's the Texan's third year here and he's earned goodwill from the coaching staff and knows the system better than the other QBs in camp. So he's in the mix, as well.

'In the last 15 years, Calgary has been the top offence in the league,' praised Adams, when asked of Dickenson's system. 'So it works.
Article content
'Now I just have to add my little flavour to it and just take care of the ball,' added Adams. 'I think that's been my biggest thing in my career, just throwing interceptions and giving up the ball. So I need to get these playmakers the ball and make me look good.'

Knights capture third Memorial Cup title with dominant 4-1 win over Tigers

London Knights' Easton Cowan (7) scores on Medicine Hat Tigers goaltender Harrison Meneghin (35) while Oasiz Wiesblatt (7) defends during second period Memorial Cup final hockey action, in Rimouski, Que., on Sunday, June 1, 2025. THE CANADIAN PRESS/Christopher Katsarov RIMOUSKI — The London Knights are Memorial Cup champions for a third time. Denver Barkey scored twice, Sam Dickinson had three assists and Austin Elliott made 31 saves in a dominant 4-1 victory over the Medicine Hat Tigers in the championship game Sunday. Jacob Julien and Easton Cowan also scored for London, which also won in 2005 and 2016. Cowan, with seven points, became the first player since 1972 to lead the tournament in scoring for consecutive years. Barkey also had seven this year. The Toronto Maple Leafs prospect also tied Mitch Marner for the most Memorial Cup points in franchise history with 15 in nine games. The back-to-back Ontario Hockey League champions redeemed last year's heartbreaking 4-3 loss to the Saginaw Spirit in the final. The Spirit scored with 22 seconds remaining to win the trophy on home ice. Gavin McKenna — the projected top choice in next year's NHL draft — replied for Medicine Hat, which defeated the Knights 3-1 in round robin play to qualify directly for the final and earn four days off. Harrison Meneghin stopped 20 shots for the Western Hockey League champions at Colisée Financière Sun Life. A WHL team hasn't won the Memorial Cup since the Edmonton Oil Kings in 2014. The Knights defeated the Moncton Wildcats, who the Quebec Maritimes Junior Hockey League, 5-2 in Friday's semifinal. The Rimouski Oceanic also played in the tournament as hosts, but lost all three games. London poured it on with three goals in the second period Sunday to take a commanding lead. After Elliott turned away a flurry of shots — including a tricky deflection from Cayden Lindstrom — Cowan buried his third of the tournament to make it 2-0 at 3:13. Cowan left the puck for Sam O'Reilly in the corner before circling the zone and finding an opening in front. Barkey added to the lead 1:40 later, capitalizing on a breakaway after Dickinson forced Tigers captain Oasiz Wiesblatt into a turnover at the blue line. Cowan appeared to make it 4-0 with his second of the night, but the officials ruled no-goal after O'Reilly interfered with Meneghin on a drive to the net. Barkey then scored his second of the night with a wrist shot from the left circle off the post and in past a screened Meneghin at 12:08. The Tigers peppered Elliott with shots on an ensuing power play. Bryce Pickford nearly scored but shot wide with the Knights netminder sprawling in the crease. McKenna finally broke Elliott's shutout bid by cutting into the slot and converting a wrist shot glove side 2:43 into the third period for his third goal in four games. The star winger was at it again with 5:21 remaining, beating Elliott with a slick shot into the top left corner. The goal, however, was called off following a review due to Ryder Ritchie's high stick earlier in the play. Medicine Hat pulled the goalie for an extra attacker with 3:50 left and held the puck in London's zone for much of the remaining time. The Knights held off the pressure before pouring out of the bench in celebration. The Tigers came out with energy in the first period, piling up nine shots in the first five minutes. Jonas Woo's shot snuck under Elliott's arm but hit the side of the net. London weathered the storm and responded with pressure of their own. Dickinson missed a chance in front after a give-and-go with Barkey. Julien broke through with the opener 11:21 into the first period when Henry Brzustewicz found him up the middle. The Knights forward beat Meneghin to the backhand for his second of the tournament. Ethan Neutens nearly got Medicine Hat on the board with 42 seconds remaining in the period, but ripped his shot from the right circle off the crossbar. London and Medicine Hat dominated their respective leagues en route to the Memorial Cup. The Knights — a team loaded with 12 NHL draft picks — went 55-11-2 in the regular season and lost only once in the playoffs. The Tigers, meanwhile, lost twice in the post-season after a 47-17-4 campaign. This report by The Canadian Press was first published June 1, 2025. Daniel Rainbird, The Canadian Press

Vancouver Whitecaps suffer blowout 5-0 defeat at CONCACAF Champions Cup

The Vancouver Whitecaps couldn't make history as the first Canadian team to win the CONCACAF Champions Cup Sunday. Instead, Ángel Sepúlveda scored twice and Cruz Azul routed the Whitecaps 5-0 to win its seventh CONCACAF title. Sepúlveda finished with a tournament-best nine goals. Ignacio Rivero, Lorenzo Faravelli and Mateusz Bogusz also scored for Cruz Azul, which built a 4-0 lead by halftime. The Liga MX club tied crosstown rival Club America for most titles in the tournament. It was Cruz Azul's first title since 2013-14 when La Máquina beat Tijuana. The Whitecaps were hoping to be the first winner from Major League Soccer since the Seattle Sounders in 2022. Cruz Azul had four shots on goal in the first half and scored on all of them. La Máquina took advantage of a defensive lapse by the Whitecaps, and Ignacio Rivero coolly finished with his left foot in the seventh minute in front of cheering home fans at Estadio Olímpico Universitario. Faravelli's goal came after a similar defensive lapse, struck from distance and went into the net after hitting the post. After Sepúlveda's sliding goal in the 37th, Bogusz added a goal in the 45th just before the teams went into the break. Sepúlveda added another goal on a header in the 50th. It was Cruz Azul goalkeeper Kevin Mier's fourth clean sheet of the tournament. The Whitecaps had no shots on goal during the match. Vancouver was without Sebastian Berhalter because of yellow card accumulation. He scored in both legs of the semifinal against Lionel Messi and Inter Miami. The Whitecaps had hoped that captain Ryan Gauld would return from a knee injury in time for the game, but he was not available. Cruz Azul advanced with a two-legged victory over UANL Tigres. It was the first meeting between the Whitecaps and Cruz Azul.
