Female pilot loses RM195,000 in Hajj package scam in Seremban

SEREMBAN: A female pilot reported losing RM194,970 in a fraudulent Hajj package deal, according to Nilai police chief Supt Abdul Malik Hasim. The victim, in her 30s, filed a police report at the Nilai police station on Tuesday (June 24) after realising she had been scammed. The pilot, employed by a local airline, had transferred the full payment to an Umrah travel agency on Jan 14. However, by March 15, she discovered the agency had ceased operations, leaving her unable to perform the Hajj as promised. Abdul Malik stated the case is being investigated under Section 420 of the Penal Code, which covers cheating and dishonesty. Authorities are actively working to trace the suspect involved in the scam. Bernama reported the incident, highlighting the growing risks of fraudulent travel and religious pilgrimage schemes.

Police Record 22 Theft Cases At ECRL Sites In Terengganu, RM300,000 In Losses

KUALA TERENGGANU, June 25 (Bernama) -- Terengganu police recorded 22 theft-related reports, including cable thefts, at East Coast Rail Link (ECRL) project sites across the state from Jan 1 to May 31 this year, with estimated losses totalling RM300,000. State police chief Datuk Mohd Khairi Khairuddin said 13 investigation papers were opened—five cases in Besut, four in Marang, two in Setiu, and one each in Kemaman and Dungun. 'Of these, five cases have been charged in court under Sections 414 and 379/511 of the Penal Code. Another five were classified as no further action (NFA) due to lack of evidence, while three are still under investigation,' he told Bernama here today. He noted the number of cases had declined compared to the same period last year, when 35 reports were lodged, involving nearly RM2 million in losses. At that time, 23 investigation papers were opened — eight cases in Marang, five each in Kuala Terengganu and Besut, three in Setiu, and two in Dungun. 'Of those cases, eight were brought to court under the same sections, five were given NFA status, and 10 remain under investigation,' he added. Mohd Khairi advised project site operators to strengthen security to prevent further theft, especially involving cables. He recommended installing perimeter fencing, CCTV cameras, and adequate lighting, especially at night, in addition to deploying sufficient security personnel and maintaining a well-organised inventory system for construction materials and equipment. He also urged nearby communities to report any suspicious activity or unauthorised movements around project sites to authorities or site management.

Ruling on Syed Saddiq's appeal today

PUTRAJAYA: Muar MP Syed Saddiq Syed Abdul Rahman (pic) will know his fate today in his appeal against his conviction and sentence in a RM1.2mil graft case involving Armada Bersatu funds. A three-judge panel at the Court of Appeal, comprising Justices Ahmad Zaidi Ibrahim, Azman Abdullah and Noorin Badaruddin, is scheduled to deliver its decision at 9am. The prosecution and the defence had both completed a three-day submission on April 17. On Nov 9, 2023, the High Court found Syed Saddiq guilty of four charges of abetting in criminal breach of trust (CBT), misappropriation of funds and money laundering involving RM1.2mil. He was sentenced to seven years of imprisonment, a RM10mil fine and two strokes of the cane for all four charges. On the first charge, Syed Saddiq was charged with abetting former Armada assistant treasurer Rafiq Hakim Razali, who was entrusted with RM1mil of Armada's funds, to commit CBT by misappropriating the funds. On the second charge, the former youth and sports minister was charged with misappropriating RM120,000 from Armada Bumi Bersatu Enterprise's Maybank Islamic Bhd account by making Rafiq dispose of the money. He was also charged with two counts of money laundering via transactions of RM50,000 each, believed to be proceeds from unlawful activities, from his Maybank Islamic Bhd account into his Amanah Saham Bumiputera account.
