Anand Mahindra Celebrates World's Largest Miyawaki Forest In Kutch
Anand Mahindra often shares fascinating places, people and things from around the world on his official X handle. Recently, the industrialist discovered another fascinating gem in India and shared it on his feed. This is a Miyawaki forest in Kutch. A Miyawaki forest is not a natural forest. "This land in the arid part of Kutch was largely barren until a few years ago. The lush, green colour has emerged only in the last few years," explains the video shared by Mahindra.
What Is A Miyawaki Forest?
Miyawaki Forest is named after the technique developed by Japanese botanist Dr Akira Miyawaki. It involves planting saplings of various species close to each other to develop a dense urban forest. Through the Miyawaki method, a forest can be developed in just two to three years.
Largest Miyawaki Forest In The World
This forest in Kutch is made possible by the state government's environmental initiatives and the vision and hard work of Dr Radhakrishnan Nair - the green hero of India. Dr Nair has helped create 115 Miyawaki forests across the country, the video shares. The one in Kutch is the largest in the world.

Miyawaki Forest In Smritivan
This Miyawaki Forest with over 3 lakh plants is a part of Smritivan - the largest memorial and museum in modern India. Smritivan was created for the bereaved families of the earthquake victims from 2001. It is situated on the Bhujiyo Dungar (a small hill) on the outskirts of Bhuj.
The Miyawaki Forest is spread across the entire memorial to create a living, breathing monument that also serves as the lungs for the city of Bhuj.

Seer takes the lead in Miyawaki model forest development
Koppal: Abhinava Gavisiddheshwara Swamiji of Koppal Gavi Mutt is spearheading the creation of the Miyawaki model forest. The initiative involves planting 25,000 saplings across a 2 km stretch with a 12-foot width, located on the Mutt's 45-acre property near Kolur and Katralli villages in Koppal taluk. "In the Miyawaki model, 3-4 plants are planted per square metre, grown densely, and afforestation is done. In this model, trees grow 10 times faster than those in traditional forests. These clusters of trees not only conserve 100 times more biodiversity but also absorb 40 times more carbon and release more oxygen. Hence, Swamiji has taken steps to adopt this model," said Sharanu Shettar, the seer's personal secretary, . "Due to the close proximity of the trees, they compete for sunlight, which accelerates their growth. Akira Miyawaki established over 1,700 microforests throughout Asia utilising this model. This approach is anticipated to be particularly beneficial for areas like Koppal," adds Rajesh Yavagal, a devotee of the Mutt. This initiative aims to put into practice the idea that if each person plants a single tree, summers will be significantly cooler. In this context, with the involvement of the forest department, agriculture department, zilla panchayat, district administration, and in partnership with the ILYF (International Lingayat Youth Forum) organisation based in Bengaluru, which focuses on social service, efforts are under way to cultivate a forest in the 45-acre area of the 'Gavi Mutt Gurukula Shikshana Samsthe' using the Miyawaki method. Considering the outcomes of this initiative, there is an intention to implement the Miyawaki model on other properties of Gavi Mutt in the near future. Should this endeavour inspire the devotees, it could potentially contribute to the greening of Koppal.

4 Japanese soldiers injured in US military base blast in Okinawa
At least four Japanese sustained injuries after an explosion took place on Monday, June 9, within the US military's Kadena Air Base in Japan's Okinawa, news agency Xinhua reported, citing local media. According to public broadcaster NHK, the blast went off at an ammunition depot that belongs to Japan's Self-Defense Forces (SDF). The soldiers were working at an Okinawa prefecture facility storing unexploded ordnance found on the island, Independent reported. This was a site that witnessed intense fighting during World War II. The fire department received reports of an explosion at the SDF-managed facility at around 11:20 am local time when the SDF personnel were preparing to conduct bomb disposal operations. Four injured SDF members working at the depot were taken to the hospital following the incident. They sustained injuries, including burns to their fingers. None of the injured are in critical condition. The SDF is investigating reports of the explosion involving a team specializing in handling unexploded ordnance, The Independent reported. Live Events Authorities are working to determine the cause and exact location of the accident. No evacuation order has been issued so far for nearby residents. The U.S. Air Force and Marine Corps handle the ammunition storage area. It covers around 26 square kilometers as of March 2024. The depot was set up by the prefecture in the storage area for the GSDF to engage in disposal of unexploded bombs, Kyodo News reported, citing local authorities The SDF has conducted 1,852 disposal operations for unexploded bombs, dealing with a total of about 35 tons nationwide in fiscal 2023. It included 441 operations involving about 19.7 tons in Okinawa, equivalent to around 57 percent of the total.

An explosion at a storage site for unexploded wartime ordinances at a US military base on Japan's southern island of Okinawa injured four Japanese soldiers, though the injuries are not life threatening, officials said on Monday. The four soldiers had injuries to their fingers while working at a facility that belongs to Okinawa prefecture to store unexploded ordnance found on the island, where one of the harshest battles of World War II was fought, local officials said. Prefectural officials said the injuries were not life threatening, but no other details were immediately known. The Self Defence Force's joint staff said they were looking into reports of an explosion at Kadena Air Base that occurred while a team of Japanese soldiers that specialises in handling unexploded ordnance was working near or at the base. The SDF said they are trying to confirm the cause of the accident and where it occurred. Hundreds of tons of unexploded wartime bombs, many of them dropped by the US military, remain buried around Japan and are sometimes dug up at construction sites and elsewhere. In October, an unexploded wartime US bomb exploded at a commercial airport in southern Japan, causing a large crater and suspending dozens of flights.
