Rohit Sharma congratulates Angelo Mathews ahead of farewell Test: ‘Had some great battles since our U19 days'
Sri Lanka veteran Angelo Mathews is playing his final Test match and former India captain Rohit Sharma sent him a heartfelt message before that. Mathews posted a video on his Instagram stories in which Rohit can be seen congratulating him 0n his career. He is calling time on a career, that has spanned 118 Test matches, in Galle, which is also where he had made his debut in the format and played his 100th Test as well. 'Hey Angie, congratulations on your fantastic career,' said Rohit, who had announced his own Test retirement on May 7.
'Over the years we had some pretty good battles from our under-19 days to now. You've been a true servant for your nation and I'm pretty sure everyone back at home appreciates what you've done for your country,' Rohit said.
Mathews admitted that part of the reason why he decided to play only the first of the two-match Test series against Bangladesh was because of the lack of long-form cricket for Sri Lanka this year. Sri Lanka will be playing just four Tests in 2025 – their lowest number of Tests in a calendar year since 2013 outside of the Covid-curtailed 2020.
Mathews said that the younger players are urging for more Test matches. 'I think it's quite sad to be honest,' he said before the match. 'I mean, the younger generation are urging for more Test cricket. Test cricket is obviously the pinnacle of cricket. We all should push for more Tests. These guys are so enthusiastic about Test cricket.
'I feel there has to be a minimum of 10 matches at least [in a year]. Teams like England, India or Australia are playing 15-plus games a year. Why can't we play? We can. If we keep pushing, I mean, we have to. We have won World Cups. We have done so much for cricket as a nation, and we deserve to play Test cricket, just like Australia, India and England,' he said.

"You've Been True Servant Of...": Rohit Sharma's Emotional Message For Retiring Angelo Matthews
Sri Lanka veteran all-rounder Angelo Matthews is all set to call time on his Test career. The 38-year-old star announced that the ongoing first Test of the two-match series between Sri Lanka and Bangladesh in Galle will be last match. Matthews, who made his Test debut at the same venue against Pakistan in 2009, has been a cornerstone of Sri Lankan cricket for more than 15 years, excelling as both an all-rounder and a leader. Appreciating Matthews' contribution in Test cricket, India ODI skipper Rohit Sharma shared a heartwarming video to congratulate the Sri Lanka star. In a video going viral on social media, Rohit was seen highlighting the battles the duo shared with each other in their respective Test careers. "Hey Angie, congratulations on your fantastic career. Over the years we had some pretty good battles from our under-19 days to now. You've been a true servant for your nation and I'm pretty sure everyone back at home appreciates what you've done for your country," Rohit said. Apart from Rohit, star batter Virat Kohli also hung his boots in the longest format. With 8,167 runs in 118 matches, he is only behind Kumar Sangakkara (12,400) and Mahela Jayawardena (11,814) for the most Test runs by a Sri Lankan. He also proved handy with the ball with 33 wickets to his name. He also has the second-most runs at Galle, with 2206 runs across 33 Test matches at the venue. "I played my 100th Test in Galle, so I thought I'd say goodbye in Galle. But the main reason was that we don't have any games coming up, at least for now. After this, we'll be having our next assignment in Test cricket after a year's time, that is a very long wait," Matthews had said.

Jasprit Bumrah confirms he can't commit to all five Tests vs England: 'Three is what I can manage'
India's pace spearhead Jasprit Bumrah has all but confirmed his availability for three matches in the upcoming five-Test series against England, set to begin on June 20. The series will kick off India's new World Test Championship cycle and mark Bumrah's return to red-ball cricket after a lengthy injury layoff. The premier fast bowler hasn't featured in international cricket since the final Test of the Border-Gavaskar Trophy against Australia in January, where a back injury once again forced him to the sidelines. During an interview with former India wicketkeeper-batter Dinesh Karthik for Sky Sports Cricket, Bumrah confirmed that he won't be available for all Tests due to workload concerns. He stated that the team management is currently planning three Tests with him, but opened the scope for more matches depending on the workload. 'Plan on the go. 3 Test matches is what I'm looking at,' Bumrah said. 'Obviously, the number is not decided. First (Test) is definitely on, that is going to happen. Rest, we will see how things are, what is the workload and scenario... but yes. 3 Tests is what I can manage at the moment.' Bumrah insisted that he doesn't want to exert himself in the longest format, and added that the major reason behind his decision to refuse Indian captaincy was his concerns surrounding workload management. 'I don't want to be in a desperate scenario. That is one part as well. If I would've been a captain, I can't be dictating that I can only play 3 Test matches. That doesn't send a good message to the team. I want to be at my best as a player and contribute to the best of my capability,' said Bumrah. Shubman Gill will lead the Indian Test team for the first time during the series against England. The decision was announced last month, following the retirement of Rohit Sharma from the format. Bumrah had been India's vice-captain under Rohit's leadership and had also led the side in two matches during the Border-Gavaskar Trophy. However, the fast bowler's tryst with injuries eventually became the major roadblock for his selection as the next Indian skipper. India face England in the first Test at Headingley; in addition to Rohit, Virat Kohli had also retired from the format last month.

I called BCCI and said I don't want to be India's Test captain: Jasprit Bumrah rejected the offer, Shubman Gill took it
Jasprit Bumrah finally broke his silence on India's Test captaincy and revealed that he was the first-choice of the Ajit Agarkar-led selection committee, but he had turned it down because of workload. Shubman Gill was named as India's Test captain for the England tour after Rohit Sharma retired from red-ball cricket, followed by Virat Kohli. Bumrah, who was vice-captain of the Test team and even led the team in three Tests (one in England and two in Australia) in Rohit's absence, should ideally have been the successor, but the back injury that he suffered in the Sydney Test in Australia changed everything. In an interview with former India wicketkeeper-batter Dinesh Karthik for SKY Sports, Bumrah shared he had spoken to BCCI officials and the selectors about his workload even before Rohit and Kohli announced their Test retirements last month. He had to make the hard decision of letting the captaincy go, as the doctors and physios advised him to be smart with his body to prolong his career. "Before Rohit and Virat retired during the IPL, I had spoken to the BCCI about my workloads going forward in a five-test match series. I've spoken to the people who have managed my back. I've spoken to the surgeon as well, who's always spoken to me about how smart you have to be about the workloads. So I did speak to him, and then we came to the conclusion that I have to be a little smarter. So then I called the BCCI and said I don't want to be looked at in a leadership role because I won't be able to give all the Test matches in a five-test match series," Bumrah said. India's pace spearhead added that he did not want the Indian side to be in a situation where there were two captains in one Test series. "Yes, the BCCI was looking at me for leadership. But then I had to say, no, that it's not fair for the team as well, that, you know, a five-Test match series, three matches, somebody else is leading, two matches, somebody else is leading. It's not fair to the team. And I always wanted to put the team first," he added. Bumrah missed the Champions Trophy and the first couple of weeks of IPL due to the back injury that he suffered in the last Test of the Border-Gavaskar Trophy. Notably, this was the second time that he went through a stress injury on his back. The first time it occurred, he was forced out of action for more than a year. Bumrah said he can offer more to the team's success as a player than just being the captain. "Even if me being there as a player offers a lot more, just not as a captain. The captaincy is a post, but you always have leaders in the team. And I wanted to do that." Widely rated as the best fast bowler going around in world cricket, Bumrah said he does not want to be in a situation where he pushes his body to a stage where he can't play three formats regularly. "If I'm not careful, I don't know about the future and I don't want to be in a situation where, you know, abruptly I have to go away from this format. So I thought that for continuity, and it is only fair to the team, that you know, the team goes in that direction where they look at long term, and I could help in whatever way I can. But yeah, captaincy meant a lot. I had worked very hard for it. But unfortunately, sometimes you have to look after the bigger picture. I love cricket more than captaincy. So I want to contribute more as a cricketer and to the Indian team as a player. Then, you know, ambitions are there, but that's how it is. And I called the BCCI and I said that I don't want to be looked at in a leadership role."
