Illinois Senate considers study of AI speed cameras on Lake Shore Drive
Chicago is not on the brink of installing AI speed cameras on DuSable Lake Shore Drive, but UIC could study the matter if a state bill becomes law.
Why it matters: Many alarmed Chicagoans reached out last week to the bill's sponsor, state Sen. Sara Feigenholtz, to oppose speed cameras.
But she stresses that the amended legislation simply seeks a study. It wouldn't add cameras. Yet.
How it works: Unlike fixed cameras, the AI-powered cameras, already in use in the U.K. and Europe, can monitor drivers over time and be used randomly to prevent slowdowns near known sites followed by high speeds.
Backstory: Feigenholtz, whose district includes the lakefront from Montrose to Oak Street, got interested in the issue when Gold Cost residents shared concerns about crashes, especially near North Avenue and the Drive.
"You wouldn't believe the videos and photos they showed me," she tells Axios. "It's like a horror movie."
This added to data from 2019 to 2024 showing 61.5% of the road fatalities in her district happened on the Drive.
Between the lines: The recent panic Feigenholtz heard from residents was likely fueled by the reality that few consistently obey the Drive's 40mph speed limit.
Some even emailed her to suggest "increasing the limit to 55," she says.
Still, Feigenholtz believes any eventual cameras would be less about punishment and fees than deterrence, noting that, "studies show 80% of the people do not reoffend after getting a warning."
Zoom in: The potential study would be done by the UIC Urban Transportation Center analyzing:
Multi-year crash data on the Drive
Potential effectiveness of the cameras on improving safety
Possible psychological deterrents to habitual speeding and other non-AI options.
The intrigue: Ald. Daniel La Spata, whose effort to lower the city's speed limit last February was also whittled down to a study, tells Axios, "The study will come back ... showing that it will work and telling her what she already knows. I just hope Sen. Feigenholtz has the courage to act on this and that her colleagues do as well."

Scoop: Cotton urges GOP senators to double down on fiery LA protests
Senate Republican leadership is urging senators to double down on condemning the chaotic protests that erupted over the weekend in Los Angeles, Axios has learned. Why it matters: Republicans are convinced they have a winning issue. " This gives us an opportunity to remind Americans how extreme the Democratic party is on immigration," Sen. Tom Cotton's office wrote to communications staff on Monday. "Americans have a choice between Republicans' law & order vs. the Democrats' car-burning, illegal alien rioters," the email, obtained by Axios, continues. Republicans see a political opening: "So far, every Senate Democrat who has spoken out has backed the rioters..." Zoom in: Republicans want to specifically target California Governor Gavin Newsom. The Cotton staffer encouraged Senate offices to paint Newsom as "the lead enabler of these riots." "What kind of governor blames police officers and the National Guard for 'inciting' this violence," Cotton wrote on X. Newsom is viewed as a likely formidable 2028 presidential candidate. Republicans also see it as an opportunity to remind voters that a key part of their sweeping "one, big beautiful bill" involves providing significant resources to ICE. The conversation around the bill has largely been focused on tax and spending cuts. Zoom out: President Trump deployed the National Guard over the weekend to help tamp down on the escalating protests — in spite of Newson's opposition. Trump has also threatened to arrest Newsom.

Democrats' delusions go far deeper than Biden — but will the party ever learn?
If you haven't read the new book by CNN's Jake Tapper and Axios's Alex Thompson, 'Original Sin,' you should. The book details how former President Biden's top aides, advisers and media contacts lied to the American people about the president's fitness for office and his suitability as a candidate, and argues that this series of cover-ups is ultimately responsible for President Trump's 2024 victory. If its revelations are even half true (and there is every reason to believe they are truer than that), this book should chill and sober Democrats, independents and anyone else who would prefer an alternative to Trump's GOP. 'Original Sin: President Biden's Decline, Its Cover-Up, and His Disastrous Choice to Run Again' raises one profound question with implications that extend far beyond 2024 or even 2028: Why did top Democrats think that they not only could but should shoehorn a sadly diminished and dangerously unfit Biden into a second presidential term? Here's one answer: Democrats' perception of their own virtue has somehow become inextricable from their unwillingness to acknowledge reality as it actually is, rather than as they would like it to be. It would have been quite convenient if Biden circa 2024 was in fact indistinguishable from Biden circa 2016 or even 2020. The fact that this was obviously not the case did not deter Democrats' insistence on it as not just true but unquestionable. The depth of this problem for the party cannot be overstated. The definitional tic of today's Democrats is a belligerent unwillingness (which ultimately seems to beget a helpless inability) to acknowledge any truth that they find inconvenient or troubling. Here's what I'm talking about: Many Democrats will still maintain that Michael Brown had his hands up when Darren Wilson shot him. They will still argue that coronavirus could not have come from a lab in China, and they will maintain that it fully warranted the closing of schools. They hold fast to the idea that traditional masculinity and 'cisgender' normativity are social constructs that can ultimately be eradicated via progressive social programming. They will not abandon the notion that biologically male transgender athletes may fairly compete as female athletes. Many influential Democrats remain unwilling or unable to acknowledge that each of these statements has been proven demonstrably false. The sad irony, of course, is that elite Democrats' insistence on collective delusion with respect to such matters leads, inevitably, exactly where their lies about Biden did: to reactionary backlash. Because they did not insist on a timely, competitive primary to replace Biden, the U.S is stuck with Trump. Because they did not correct the lies and check the excesses of Black Lives Matter and its apologists in K-12 and higher education, we are left with decreased public safety and increased racial tensions. Because they did not ask the correct questions about COVID but parroted the mantra 'trust the science' in response to answers from those who did, we are left with an academic achievement gap that will disproportionately affect low-income, non-white students for the rest of their lives. Because they did not concede the biological facts of dimorphic sex and of characterological and psychological differences between most men and most women, we are left with decreasing societal acceptance for homosexual Americans and misogynistic attempts to regressively erase intragroup variance among women. I know that many of my fellow Democrats are primed to reply: 'But that's not fair! They are the ones who elected Trump, and who are harboring these racists and misogynists, and you blame us?' Well, yes. Here's why: By denying realities they find unsavory, Democrats leave any legitimate claim of truth to Republicans. And MAGA embraces that truth — with a literal vengeance. The Republicans' manner of denying reality is to wildly overstate it. So, for today's manosphere, for example, women are not just different from men on average, but so entirely unlike men that they should all, when possible, reflexively eschew any professional ambition in favor of 'tradwifery.' If Democrats did not deny fundamental truths altogether, fewer people would accept Republicans' bastardizations of them. Can Tapper and Thompson's book be positioned as one that uses Biden as a case study to help Democrats see that we gain nothing by denying reality, and behave accordingly? I hope so. Because the truth will out. And it would be really good for the country if that most fundamental reality of all did not so overwhelmingly favor today's patently cruel and often incompetent Republican Party. Trump-Newsom feud boils over during immigration protests in LA
The immigration protests in Los Angeles are the latest flashpoint in a simmering battle between the Trump administration and California with the federal government repeatedly threatening to cut funding to the state. The big picture: Clashes over progressive ideologies on climate, transgender rights and immigration are at the center of President Trump's issue with the Golden State — but California's Democratic leaders are putting up a fight. The president has repeatedly threatened the state with funding cuts and a continued federal immigration crackdown despite recent protests in California cities including Los Angeles and nearby Paramount. The latest: Trump deployed 2,000 National Guard members to California on Saturday in response to protests sparked by recent federal immigration sweeps in Los Angeles County. Los Angeles Mayor Karen Bass advocated for immigrants targeted in the sweeps and said her office was in "close coordination with immigrant rights community organizations." Trump lambasted Bass and the state's governor, further deepening the ongoing divide. California plans to sue the administration for federalizing the National Guard. How Trump has threatened California's funding? The president recently threatened to cut funding to California if it continues allowing transgender athletes to compete in women's sports, doubling down after a trans high schooler won state championships. He's poised to toss out California's stringent auto emissions standards. His move to halt student visa interviews and revoke visas for Chinese students jeopardizes California universities, which have more international students than any other state. And Trump has clashed with Gov. Gavin Newsom over the state's response to the Los Angeles-area fires and previously threatened to withhold federal aid if the state doesn't agree to the president's demands. What they're saying: Amid reports of funding cuts to the state, White House spokesperson Kush Desai told Axios in an emailed statement Friday: "No taxpayer should be forced to fund the demise of our country, and that's what California is doing through its lunatic anti-energy, soft-on-crime, pro-child mutilation, and pro-sanctuary policies." The Trump administration, he said, "is committed to ending this nightmare and restoring the California Dream." "No final decisions, however, on any potential future action by the Administration have been made, and any discussion suggesting otherwise should be considered pure speculation," Desai said. How California Gov. Newsom responded Newsom responded to the report Friday that alleged Trump would cut funding, making a threat of his own to stop paying the state's federal taxes. "Californians pay the bills for the federal government. We pay over $80 BILLION more in taxes than we get back." Tagging Trump, he added, "Maybe it's time to cut that off." Zoom out: The state is suing the administration and is doing so at nearly double the rate of Trump's first term — with no plans to slow down, per CalMatters, a nonprofit news outlet.
