Bad news for Team India, star player gets hurt on first of practice in England

India.com8 hours ago

India arrives in England for the World Test Championship! A five-match Test series against England is on the horizon. The series starts June 20th, but the team is already practicing. Early preparations are underway.
After a day of rest, the team engaged in light fitness drills at Lord's. Skill practice commenced on June 8th in Beckenham, a town near London. The team will spend approximately 10 days honing their skills here.
An unpleasant incident happened on the first day of practice. Star Indian wicketkeeper-batsman Rishabh Pant got hurt in his hand. He got injured while he was batting, with a ball striking his left hand near the elbow.
How badly this injury will affect him is not known yet. It is believed that the injury happened during batting practice after a player was struck by a throwdown speacilist. It was clear that Pant was in discomfort and quick ice treatment made him decide to leave the nets.
Before he was injured, there was a sign that Pant's batting was off as he kept getting out. The moment they arrived, team members put ice on the injury site and put a bandage on it. Pant did not give up playing because of the injury.
Rishabh Pant has played 9 Test matches in England, where he has amassed a total of 556 runs at an average of 32.70 with help of two centuries.
Team India arrived in England nearly two weeks before the start of the Test series on June 20th and is currently practicing in Beckenham, near London. This practice camp is approximately ten days long, but the team received worrying news on the very first day.

WTC Final: 'We want to honour legends of the past' - Keshav Maharaj ahead of Australia clash at Lord's

Keshav Maharaj (AP Photo) NEW DELHI: Keshav Maharaj is determined to follow in the famous footsteps of Graeme Smith and his world number one team of yesteryears at the World Test Championship final, beginning on Wednesday. South Africa will face-off against Australia for ownership of the ICC Test Championship mace at the Lord's, the same venue where the Proteas last got their hands on the trophy 13 years ago. A legendary South Africa side comprising Jacques Kallis, Dale Steyn and Graeme Smith beat England at the fabled ground to rise to world number one that day, and Maharaj revealed those memories are fuelling motivation for his side to repeat the feat. Go Beyond The Boundary with our YouTube channel. SUBSCRIBE NOW! "I remember watching that when they lifted the mace," he said. "We know that apart from doing it for us, we want to honour the legends of the past and hopefully we will one day be seen in the same calibre and light to win such a coveted title and hold the Test mace." South Africa arrive in London in strong form following seven consecutive Test victories, with last defeat coming against New Zealand in February 2024. That run took the Proteas to the top of the ICC World Test Championship table and has bred plenty of confidence in camp ahead of the decider against Australia. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like Giao dịch vàng CFDs với mức chênh lệch giá thấp nhất IC Markets Đăng ký Undo "When we started the journey two years ago, a lot of people didn't think we'd be in this situation, but with each and every series we grew more and more," added Maharaj. "Our blend of youth and experience complements each other really nicely, and we find ourselves competing for another trophy. The boys have put in a lot of hard work. The excitement is building as we edge closer and it's now about letting it sink in and soaking up the occasion to allow us to play with freedom.' Maharaj is one of a number in the South African squad who have come agonisingly close to ICC silverware in the past few years. The spinner was part of the side that finished runners-up at the T20 World Cup 2024, while the Proteas also reached the semi-finals of both the ODI World Cup 2023 and Champions Trophy 2025. While those near misses still sting, Maharaj is insistent on using those experiences in a positive way. 'In previous attempts, no one expected us to reach the knockout phases of any competition, but we have reached two semi-finals and two finals. 'Hopefully through all those misses we come right in this one. There is a lot of inspiration we can draw from in the brand of cricket we have played in the last three or four years. 'If we run with it and stay true to it, hopefully this is our opportunity to finally raise that most-coveted trophy that has eluded us for a number of years,' he said. On a personal note, Maharaj is just two away from 200 Test wickets, and while the experienced spinner is happy to trade individual accolades for team success, the prospect of bringing up the milestone at Lord's is one that he cannot escape. 'I don't pay too much attention to the numbers, I just want to help ensure my team wins, so hopefully I can get a 10-fer. 'I've enjoyed my journey so far, hopefully I've got a long time left, but to get that feat in front of my family at Lord's would be very special," added Maharaj.

Virat Kohli's 'cockiness' on debut series revealed by his senior teammate: 'He owned the dressing room'

Former India all-rounder Irfan Pathan walked down memory lane to recall his first impression of Virat Kohli when he entered the dressing room for his maiden series. Kohli entered the Indian team carrying high expectations on his shoulders, having led the Under-19 squad to a World Cup triumph in 2008. He began his international journey with an ODI debut on the tour of Sri Lanka and, over time, established himself as one of the greatest white-ball batters the game has ever seen. Pathan, a key member of the squad during Kohli's debut series, reminisced about the young Delhi batter's entry into the dressing room, noting how he exuded confidence right from the start. "He won the Under-19 World Cup as a captain in 2008. He came into the dressing room with confidence and cockiness. I saw him very closely in Sri Lanka. He owned the dressing room, and it did not feel like he was a youngster," Pathan said in a video on his YouTube channel. However, when it comes to IPL, he didn't have the best of starts to his journey in the cash-rich league. In his first three IPL seasons, he couldn't cross the 400-run mark, but the 2012 edition marked a turning point as he surpassed 500 runs for the first time. From there, he never looked back, eventually becoming the highest run-scorer in the tournament's history. Pathan also reflected on the RCB superstar's IPL journey and how the peak of his career began in the 2012 edition. "But when his IPL journey began in 2008, he got around 150 runs. It was not that special, but by the time the whole cycle of his youth ends in 2012, before that came in the 2011 season where he scored more than 500 runs for RCB for the first time in his IPL career. The peak of his career started from there," Pathan said on his YouTube channel. Kohli had announced his retirement from the longest format last month after featuring in 123 Tests for India, scoring 9,230 runs at an average of 46.85, including 30 centuries.

Arjun Erigaisi overtakes D Gukesh in FIDE chess rankings, becomes new India No. 1

Arjun Erigaisi is the new India No. 1 and overtaking D Gukesh in the updated FIDE rankings. In the June FIDE rankings, Erigaisi occupies third position, ahead of Gukesh, who is now fifth with 2776 Elo rating points. Meanwhile, Erigaisi has bagged 2782 Elo rating points. But after the conclusion of Norway Chess 2025, Erigaisi (2778.6) fell to fourth position in the live chess rankings. Meanwhile, Gukesh also fell to fifth position, with 2776.6 Elo rating points. Norway Chess 2025 saw Magnus Carlsen win the title for a record-seventh time, finishing on top with 16 points. Meanwhile, American GM Fabiano Caruana (15.5) came second, followed by D Gukesh (14.5) in third position. Meanwhile, American GM Hikaru Nakamura is fourth with 14 points and Erigaisi came fifth with 13. Wei Yi finished bottom of the standings with 9.5 points. Speaking to Chess24 at the sidelines of the tournament, Carlsen also had a warning for Gukesh, stating, 'I think if Hikaru (Nakamura) or Fabi (Caruana), or probably Nepo (Ian Nepomniachtchi) for that matter, win the Candidates they would be, at the moment, they would be a favorite in a match against Gukesh. Hikaru's come close twice. He's still extremely good so there's no reason why he couldn't.' 'Gukesh showed in this tournament he's on track, he's doing fantastic, but he's not ahead of track,' he added. Speaking on his defeat to Gukesh in Round 6, Carlsen said, 'Honestly, it could have meant a lot to me if I had finished off the game against Gukesh and then played a really good tournament. Now, regardless of what happens, it would kind of be like a bit of stumbling into a win.' Carlsen beat Gukesh in their Round 1 meeting, but the Indian GM bagged his first classical win against the World No. 1 in Round 6, taking advantage of a huge time scramble blunder.
