As first Six Nations starts go, being pitched in against a rampant French side looking to win the title under the lights at Stade de France is about as daunting as they come.And that is exactly the situation Scotland lock Gregor Brown will find himself in come Saturday night in Paris.Many have felt that the Scottish second row - featuring two outstanding Test servants in the shape of Grant Gilchrist and Jonny Gray – has lacked a little dynamism in this championship, and perhaps that explains why Gregor Townsend has turned to the 23-year-old Glasgow Warrior to add some youthful energy."He's just turned into a real top quality, sort of nuts-and-bolts number four," said Fraser Brown, BBC pundit and a former team-mate at Glasgow."He's maybe a little bit on the short side for a second row, but what he lacks a little bit in height, he certainly doesn't lack in effort."Defensively, he works really hard. He works like a back-rower in the second row. Good lineout option, quick off the floor."He's very physical, abrasive, aggressive. He carries hard, he'll make gain-line every single time."His carry height is really good. Ball presentation is very good. You get quick ball off of him."
Brown will win his ninth Scotland cap in Paris having made his debut against Canada in July last year. It will be only his fourth start and it will be fascinating to see how he measures up against the giants in the French pack.He has become an important player in Franco Smith's Glasgow squad after a difficult beginning to his career at Scotstoun."He started more as back-row and played in that URC quarter-final against Leinster in 2022 that we lost by 70 points," said Fraser Brown."He had a pretty tough couple of years after that, picked up a lot of injuries. I think if you ask him now, he probably reflects on that as a pretty low point in his career, but also probably kind of the making of him because he certainly managed to develop some resilience."I've got nothing but good things to say about Gregor. I wanted him to be in the starting Scotland team from the second week of this Six Nations to be honest. I'm really pleased that he's got a start."I think it's going to be a tough ask for him in France against that pack. But certainly, knowing the character he is, he won't take a backward step."

Rivalry gathers momentum as Alcaraz and Sinner contest first major final
Towards the final stretch of the big three's unprecedented period of dominance of the ATP tour, as it became clear that Roger Federer, Rafael Nadal and Novak Djokovic would all sequentially vacate their thrones, the future of men's tennis was clouded in uncertainty. Although there was a talented, competitive generation of players born in the 1990s waiting to take their place, the gulf in quality between them was significant. For a short time, it seemed like the men's side of the draw could open up and provide opportunities for any top player brave enough to take them. The past fortnight in Paris has again underlined how Jannik Sinner and Carlos Alcaraz have emphatically shut the door on this prospect. As they prepare to face each other in a grand slam final for the first time in their careers at Roland Garros on Sunday, it will mark the sixth consecutive grand slam that has been won by either Sinner, the world No 1, and the world No 2 Alcaraz. From the start of the tournament, it felt inevitable that they would face each other in the championship match. Their first grand slam final also represents the first major final between two players born in the 2000s. Dominic Thiem's victory over Alexander Zverev in the 2020 US Open final remains the only final between two players born in the 1990s. Six years ago, in his first ATP challenger tournament and third professional outing overall, a 15-year-old Alcaraz was drawn against Sinner at the Juan Carlos Ferrero Academy in Villena, Spain, his training base. The pair had both received wildcards, with Alcaraz completely unranked and a 17-year-old Sinner holding a modest ranking of No 319. Alcaraz won in three sets. Since then, every meeting has only further heightened the anticipation that this would soon be the most important rivalry in the men's game. By the time they were battling at almost 3am in their 2022 US Open quarter-final, an instant classic won in five sets by Alcaraz en route to his first grand slam title, this moment felt inevitable. 'He's a player who makes me a better player,' said Sinner on Friday. 'He pushes me to the limit. We try to understand where we have to improve for the next time I play against him.' Although he needed more time to iron out his early mental deficiencies, Sinner has established a remarkable level of consistency since he found his path at the end of 2023. Sinner's record is 47-2 since last August, winning the last two grand slam titles at the US Open and Australian Open, and the vast majority of those matches have not even been close. His three-month doping ban between February and May has done little to halt his momentum and form. Six matches into the event, Sinner has undoubtedly been the player of the tournament, tearing through his opponents without dropping a set. Both players have many years to build their résumés, but as he seeks out his first grand slam title away from hard courts, Sinner will also be attempting to win his fourth major title, which would draw him level with Alcaraz. Those two defeats suffered by Sinner, however, came at the hands of Alcaraz, who won their gripping three-set final in the Beijing Open last year and then recently outplayed Sinner in Rome, Sinner's comeback tournament from his doping ban. East Kilbride YM join West of Scotland Fourth Division to set up derby with EK Thistle next term
The club now has opportunity to reach the professional ranks after being voted in at the WOSFL AGM Long-established Amateur side East Kilbride YM will make the step up to the West of Scotland Football League next season after being voted into the Fourth Division for the 2025/26 campaign. In a huge development for the Kirktonholme side, it means the town's oldest football club - formed in 1921 - are now part of the Scottish football pyramid system and have the opportunity to climb their way into the senior ranks in the future. The club were voted in at the West of Scotland Football League AGM this afternoon and their under-19 side will compete in the West of Scotland Development League. The news comes just weeks after East Kilbride FC won promotion to play in the senior ranks in SPFL League Two next season. And YM's inclusion in the West of Scotland Fourth Division next term also means they will play a derby with the town's other major side, East Kilbride Thistle, who finished seventh in that league last season. YM won the Caledonian Premier Division - the Scottish Amateur top flight in the region - this season and also reached the final of the West Cup, so this marks a huge step up but it is one boss Graeme Robertson believes the club are ready for. He said: "East Kilbride YM FC are delighted to announce that at this afternoon's West of Scotland Football League AGM we were voted into the WoSFL for this coming season. "This is a culmination of a lot of hard work behind the scenes by the YM Committee which now provides a player pathway from EKYC into EKYM and the opportunity to play in a Senior Professional League which is part of the SFA Pyramid System. "The very succesfull YM Under 19s, who were an excellent EKYC team prior to last season, will move to become the EKYM WoSFL Development team playing in a professional Development League. "This is a crucial part of the whole project as it is the YM's intention to promote players from within the club to the Professional Senior side in the WoSFL. "With several players in the Senior side having came through the YC Youth setup, it highlights the success of the partnership with our good friends at YC within EK United, a true Community Club. "I would just like to thank everyone from the YM and YC who played their part in making today happen."
