Ian Bailey 'probably was 100% innocent' of Sophie Toscan du Plantier's murder, says film director
Film director Jim Sheridan has said that the late Ian Bailey 'probably was 100% innocent' of the murder of Sophie Toscan du Plantier in West Cork.
The battered body of the French film producer (aged 39) was found near her holiday home in Toormore on the outskirts of Schull in West Cork on December 23, 2006.
Mr Sheridan said he believes the case is a "double injustice".
'I feel Sophie's murderer has never been found, her death has never been avenged. A man who probably was 100% innocent has been castigated through life; he lived a horrible life and died a horrible death and has a horrible name," he told Newstalk Breakfast.
'I don't think he killed her and there's not a shred of evidence to say he did.'
Mr Sheridan's new drama Re Creation, about the murder, recently premiered at the Tribeca Film Festival in New York. Starring Colm Meaney, Aidan Gilles and Vicky Krieps, it imagines what could have unfolded if the unresolved murder had gone before a jury in Ireland.
Ian Bailey, who died in January 2024 at the age of 66, was the self-confessed chief suspect in the case. He was on two occasions detained by Gardaí for questioning in relation to the murder.

Mr Bailey was convicted in absentia after a trial in France in 2015. He was sentenced to 25 years in prison. However, officials in France were unable to extradite him to Paris to serve the sentence handed down by the courts.
Mr Sheridan said that Mr Bailey's conviction in Paris was a 'farce". He said that he 'of course' knew he risked causing upset to the family of Toscan du Plantier with his new drama.
'You can't say because you're upset that you can ruin another man's life,' he said. "There's no evidence.'
Mr Sheridan acknowledged that Mr Bailey's history of violence with his former partner Jules Thomas was 'not good".
He said that there was no doubt of the suffering experienced by the family of Ms Toscan du Plantier. However, Mr Sheridan stressed that the family of Mr Bailey have also suffered over the years.
I'm sure Ian Bailey's sister was upset that there was nobody at his funeral and that he had to die in that ignominious way. I'm sure she's upset.
Alain Spilliaert, a lawyer for Ms Toscan du Plantier's family, said he has not seen the film yet but has expressed concerned about its potential content.
'We feel that it is not relevant to show a fictional movie at this point of time of the criminal investigation. This is such a large, sensitive case in Ireland… and it's not finished.'

Tributes pour for retired engineer who died in Kerry road accident
Tributes have been paid to this pensioner – who was one of two cyclists to die on Irish roads within 24 hours. Paddy O'Donoghue, 78, was killed when he was struck by a vehicle as he cycled in his native Co Kerry on Tuesday afternoon. Fianna Fail Killarney councillor Niall Kelleher said: 'I knew Paddy. He was very caring. He was a very nice man. It is very shocking new for the entire community.' His death notice on says funeral details for the father of seven will be confirmed later. It says: 'Beloved husband of Brenda and loving father of Florence, Áine, Denise, Brenda, Báirbre, Patrick and Alice. Meanwhile, Gardaí in south west Dublin are investigating the death of a cyclist early on Wednesday. The 19-year-old died after he was struck by a van in Lucan at 7.30am. He is believed to be from the area. Gardaí said in a statement the young man died from his injuries in hospital. It said: 'Shortly after 7:30am, Gardaí were alerted after a cyclist was struck by a van at the junction of Griffeen Avenue, R136 and Balgaddy Road. 'The cyclist, a 19-year-old male, received treatment at the scene before being transported by ambulance to Tallaght Hospital, where he was later pronounced deceased. No other injuries were reported. 'Garda Forensic Collision Investigators are currently examining the scene and local traffic diversions are in place. The local coroner has been notified and arrangements will be made for a post-mortem examination.' Gardaí are appealing for witnesses to the incident to come forward. The force said: 'Road users who may have relevant camera footage (including dash-cam) and were traveling in the area at the time are asked to make this footage available to investigating Gardaí. Two people arrested over St Stephen's Day hit-and-run in which couple died
TWO people have been arrested in connection with a hit-and-run incident on St Stephen's Day in which a married couple lost their lives. Georgina Hogg Moore, 38, and her husband Anthony Hogg, 39, were struck by a vehicle near the Blanchardstown Shopping Centre in Dublin at around 5.45pm on December 26. Mrs Hogg Moore was pronounced dead at the scene, while her husband passed away later in hospital. The couple, who were described as 'incredible individuals', had two children. Gardaí revealed today that two people had been detained as part of the investigation into the incident. "Gardaí continue to investigate the fatal hit-and-run road traffic collision involving a car and pedestrians that occurred at Blanchardstown, Dublin 15, on Thursday evening, December 26, 2024," said a spokesperson. "Gardaí have arrested two persons this morning in relation to this fatal road traffic collision. "A man, aged 40 years was arrested in connection with this investigation and he is currently detained under Section 30 Offences Against the State Act, 1939 at a Garda station in the Dublin. Man arrested after over €100,000 worth of jewellery stolen from Dublin shop

More info A man has been arrested after over €100,000 worth of jewellery was stolen from a Dublin shop this morning. Gardai in Pearse Street responded to the incident at a store on Clarendon Street following the robbery at about 2:45am. A description of the suspect was taken from the shop's CCTV, and immediately circulated to officers in the area. Within the hour, gardai on patrol at St Stephen's Green arrested a man in his 40s matching the description. He is currently being held at a garda station in the city. The jewellery stolen, estimated to be worth over €100,000, was recovered by gardai. The scene remains preserved for a technical examination. A garda spokesperson said: "Gardaí in Pearse Street have arrested a man in his 40s this morning following a burglary at a business premises this morning, Wednesday 11th June 2025. At approximately 2:45am, Gardaí responded to a report of a burglary at a retail premises on Clarendon Street, Dublin 2. "On arrival, it was clear that the premises had been damaged and jewellery taken during the burglary. A description of a suspect was obtained through CCTV, and immediately circulated on radio to other members on duty in the area. "Within the hour, Gardaí on dedicated high-visibility patrol near St. Stephen's Green, Dublin 2 observed a person matching this description. The man (40s) was apprehended by Gardaí and arrested. "He is currently detained under Section 4 of the Criminal Justice Act, 1984 at a Garda Station in Dublin in connection with this incident. Gardaí preserved a site next to where the male was arrested for the purpose of conducting a search. "The jewellery stolen in this incident and now recovered by Gardaí is estimated to be to the value of more than €100,000. The site remains preserved awaiting forensic examination.
