Prince William's warning to world leaders over the future of our oceans

Independent6 hours ago

Prince William addressed the Blue Economy and Finance Forum (BEFF) in Monaco, urging world leaders, including French President Emmanuel Macron, to take decisive action to protect the world's oceans.
William emphasised the urgency of meeting the UN Biodiversity Summit's target to protect 30% of the world's land and sea by 2030, highlighting the threats of rising sea temperatures, plastic pollution, and overfishing.
The Prince quoted Sir David Attenborough, stressing the need to save the sea to save the world, and praised Attenborough's new film 'Ocean' for its compelling argument for immediate action.
William met with Earthshot Prize finalists and winners, showcasing their innovative solutions for ocean conservation, such as coral reef restoration, marine enforcement against illegal fishing, and plastic pollution prevention.
The BEFF, supported by Monaco, France, and Costa Rica, aims to contribute to the UN's sustainable development goal 14, focusing on conserving and sustainably using oceans and marine resources.

For the outing, Lily showed off her classy sense of style as she styled her shiny raven tresses into a sleek straightened bob. The French Openis a major tennis tournament that is being played on outdoor clay courts and held at the Roland Garrosin Paris from 25 May to 8 June 2025, comprising singles, doubles, mixed doubles play, junior and wheelchair tournaments. Coco Gauff conquered Roland-Garros for the very first time after coming from behind to defeat the top-ranked Sabalenka 6-7, 6-2, 6-4. This marked the second Grand Slam of Gauff's career, having also claimed the 2023 US Open title. The world No 2 became the first American to win the French Open since Serena Williams in 2015. To tee up Saturday's showdown, Gauff beat Lois Boisson in the semi-final, while Sabalenka edged past world No 5 Swiatek. And in an ungracious press-conference after the final, Sabalenka argued that Swiatek would have beaten Gauff had she progressed past the semi-final.

Sir David Attenborough almost killed by faulty scuba diving equipment

To view this video please enable JavaScript, and consider upgrading to a web browser that supports HTML5 video Sir David Attenborough has detailed an unsettling incident in which he nearly drowned when scuba diving. The natural historian and broadcaster, 99, first appeared on screens in the 1950s, when he presented natural history programmes including Coelacanth and Zoo Quest for the BBC. His TV credits now span eight decades, with Sir David since presenting shows including Wildlife on One, The Blue Planet and Planet Earth, as well as the newly released film Ocean. However, he's now recalled a moment early in his career when he came close to a deadly situation. Speaking to Prince William at an event to promote his new documentary Ocean, Sir David was presented with an open-circuit helmet. Picking it up and putting it on his head, he spoke about testing a scuba diving outfit while filming on the Great Barrier Reef in 1957. 'When I put mine on for the first time I suddenly felt water and thought, 'this can't be right'. But by the time the water got about there I thought, 'I'm sure this is not right',' he said. 'Of course, you've got this thing screwed on top of you and you can't breathe or make yourself heard. I was saying 'get it off me'.' Sir David then spoke about the director leading the documentary initially refusing to take his concerns seriously. 'He grabbed it and said it was fine, but I again said there was a fault, and he put it on, and I'm happy to say, he went underwater and came up even faster than I did, because there was actually a fault on the thing,' he added. During the discussion Sir David also described his first dive as a 'sensory overload' and commented on how the reefs he first visited decades ago had now been devastated. 'The awful thing is that it's hidden from you and from me and most people,' he said. 'The thing which I was appalled by when I first saw the shots taken for this film, is that what we have done to the deep ocean floor is just unspeakably awful.' 'I mean, if you did anything remotely like it on land, everybody would be up in arms. If this film does anything, if it just shifts public awareness, it'll be very, very important, and I only hope that people who see it will recognise that something must be done before we destroy this great treasure.' The pair spoke as part of the promotional launch for Ocean, which sees Sir David 'drawing on a lifetime of experience to reveal Earth's most spectacular underwater habitats, showing that we're in the greatest age of Ocean discovery and highlighting its vital importance'. Sir David said he hoped the film could 'expose something new' and encourage viewers to act to save the destruction of the ocean. Despite his indelible impact on the world and environmentalism, last year his producer Mike Gunton told Metro Sir David hated being called a 'national treasure'. More Trending 'He hates it, by the way,' he said. 'I say hates it… If anybody says he's a national treasure, he sort of slightly raises his eyebrows and says, 'Really?' That's a generational thing.' When it was noted Sir David's work is of far greater importance than a title, Mike responded: 'You've hit the nail on the head.' Prince William's cousin Lady Marina Windsor reveals she's engaged in surprise post - as she shows off her stunning ring

Lady Marina Windsor has announced she is engaged. The philanthropic executive, 32, who is the third cousin of Prince William and Prince Harry, shared the news to Instagram on Sunday with a series of sweet snaps of herself and now-fiancé Nico Macauley, also 32. A short caption, reading 'very happy' was enough to convey how Marina, the granddaughter of Prince Edward, Duke of Kent, felt about being betrothed to her partner of two years and becoming the future Mrs Macauley. Lady Marina and Nico, an account executive with Zscaler, have rarely been spotted out together, which has perhaps left fans shocked by the news of the happy engagement. The royal, who was 25th in line to the British throne before being excluded in 2008 after she was confirmed as a Roman Catholic, was recently spotted at a lavish soirée in Kew Gardens attended by the King and Queen, though her beau was nowhere in sight. And though he has made a series of loved up appearances on her Instagram page, accompanying captions have often left fans wondering about the nature of their relationship. Today all was confirmed with three images showing Lady Marina's gorgeous engagement ring which was front and centre in all posts. The silver ring featured what appeared to be a smooth circular onyx gemstone sealed in the centre of the jewel. The first picture featured the newly engaged couple smiling gleefully for the camera while Marina showed of the precious jewel with lightly manicured nails. Donning a white floral dress, and no make-up she looked straight at the lens while bearing a large smile. The next image was dimly-lit and taken in what appeared to be the backdrop of a restaurant, though her large grin could be spotted from miles away. The third picture showed Marina in a yellow dress and Nico in a navy blue wool jacket, as the happy pair shared a toast to the good news. Messages of congratulations poured in for the soon-to-be husband and wife, including one from her younger sister, Lady Amelia Windsor, 29. 'Yippeeee!' wrote the model. Other people stated their pleasure at the happy news, while one person said the announcement left them 'crying'. In 2023, Marina shocked fans when she attended a pal's wedding wearing traditional Nigerian attire. While some members of the Royal Family were preparing their outfits for King Charles's Coronation, Lady Marina Windsor was seen enjoying dressing up in a Nigerian custom look. She was spotted donning a head wrap, called a gele, with a lilac, laced dress, which was all to do with a friend's wedding in the West African country. She was joined by her fellow British bridesmaids, Marina Cochrane and Rose Crosthwaite, who work in the art world. Lady Marina has been on the Buckingham Palace balcony at previous royal occasions but wasn't there for the Coronation because she's not a working member of 'The Firm'.
