Doctor allegedly tried to push wife off 1000ft cliff in Hawaii
A doctor accused of trying to murder his wife on a hiking trail in Hawaii attacked her because she refused to take a picture with him, police sources have claimed.
Anaesthesiologist Gerhardt Konig, 46, was arrested on Monday after allegedly striking Arielle Konig in the head with a rock and attempting to push her off the 1000ft Nuʻuanu Pali Lookout in Oahu.
Dr Konig attacked his nuclear engineer wife, 36, at around 10am after she refused to take a photo with him, according to police sources.
Mrs Konig told officials her husband had attacked her with his fists and a rock before he tried to push her off the trail, according to Hawaii News Now.
Dr Konig is also alleged to have used syringes during the attack, although it is not clear if they contained anything.
The victim was taken to a local hospital in critical condition with serious head and facial injuries. She told medical officials her husband had attacked her.
Dr Konig was arrested after a six-hour manhunt near Nuuanu Pali Drive shortly after 6pm after fleeing the scene on foot.
He is facing a second-degree attempted murder charge, pending review from the prosecutor's office.
The Nuʻuanu Pali Lookout sits around 1000ft above the Oahu coastline, offering views of the Koʻolau cliffs and Windward Coast, according to gohawaii.com.
Honolulu Police Department said officers 'located Gerhardt Konig near Pali Highway and arrested him after a brief foot pursuit. Charges are pending.'
The Konigs have been married for seven years and live in a $1.5 million home in Maui, according to reports.
Dr Konig's medical licence, which he obtained in September 2022, was still valid when The Telegraph checked the state's professional vocational licensing database on Wednesday morning.
Maui Health, Dr Konig's employer, suspended him pending investigation.
'Maui Health is committed to patient safety and upholding the highest standards of care,' the firm told KHON2 in a statement.
'We have been made aware of the allegations against Gerhardt Konig, MD. Dr Konig has been suspended from the medical staff pending investigation.'
Dr Konig previously worked as an assistant professor of anaesthesiology and bioengineering at the University of Pittsburgh Schools of Medicine and Engineering.
His wife graduated with a degree in nuclear engineering from the Pennsylvania State University and an MBA from the University of Pittsburgh, according to her LinkedIn account.
She is currently employed as a project manager working on HALEU (High-Assay Low-Enriched Uranium) supply for firm TerraPower.

She also said her husband has sexually abused and assaulted her. The Associated Press does not name people who say they have been sexually abused unless they come forward publicly. She has since agreed that the restraining order is now unnecessary because her husband is being held without bail during the criminal case against him. Her attorney said she may refile the petition if Konig's custody status changes.

Troup, 46, appeared at Inverness Sheriff Court to admit a single charge of threatening or abusive behaviour in relation to the incident on July 7 last year. A man who had to be PAVA-sprayed to stop him from attacking a police officer has been jailed. Jason Mullen had overpowered the policeman, straddling him and delivering blows before the incapacitating spray was deployed. The assault took place after a man was found slumped in an alleyway near Inverness Library, the city's sheriff court heard. Mullen, 24, appeared from custody before Sheriff Sara Matheson to admit charges of threatening or abusive behaviour and assaulting the officer. A woman whose husband allegedly tried to bludgeon her to death has dramatically dropped her restraining order request. Gerhardt Konig, 46, a renowned anesthesiologist, was arrested in March after being accused of trying to push Arielle Konig, 36, off a cliff and smashing her with a rock. 'One of the reasons why we also dismissed the TRO without prejudice at this time is because of the ongoing media coverage and having to testify for the grand jury,' Segal added. 'She's made statements to the police and so she just wants to get back to some semblance of normal life.' Prosecutors allege during the hike up Nuʻuanu Pali Lookout in Oahu in March, Arielle was attacked with a softball-sized rock by her husband, who also tried to inject her with syringes and push her off a cliff. Last week, a judge denied Gerhardt's bail, agreeing with the prosecution that he was a flight risk and posed a danger to Arielle if released from custody. 'She's not reminding her allegations, she's not dropping her allegations,' Segal said on Friday. 'This is a procedural reason why we dropped this TRO, this TRO was dismissed only because of the custody status,' he added. 'She does intend to testify at trial.' The court granted Arielle's request to dismiss the restraining order without prejudice, meaning it could be refiled if her husband's custody status changes, KHON reported. She was left critically injured, suffering head and facial trauma, and was ultimately hospitalized. Arielle then told police her husband attacked her after she refused to take a photo with him. A six-hour manhunt followed before police caught up with Gerhardt near Pali Highway after a brief foot chase. During a hearing in April, the court was told how Arielle had been accused of having an affair by her jealous husband. She also said that he had sexually assaulted her. Prosecutors say Konig struck Arielle with closed fists and a rock, tried to push her off a cliff, and attempted to inject her with unknown substances using syringes. It is unclear what drove the doctor with the seemingly picture-perfect life to allegedly commit a horrific act of violence against his high-achieving wife. The couple had moved to Maui in 2022 for what Gerhardt reportedly called his 'dream job.' His trial is expected to begin in June.
