Independence Avenue CID workers help woman and dog escape house fire
KANSAS CITY, Mo. — The Independence Avenue Community District works to support businesses, keep the area clean and be the eyes for the area.
Crews are trained how to respond to emergencies, training that helped someone during a house fire on Monday morning.

'Their quick action is why I was able to get over there,' Laura Birdsong, team resource manager for the the Independence Avenue CID, said.
Birdsong says these crew members were the ones who first spotted the house fire.
'It was starting to go not only up the wall, but into the roof area. It was quickly taking over, it grew fast just in the few moments we were over there,' Birdsong said.
She knew a woman and her dog lived at the home. She first called 911 and then sprung into action.
'I just ran to the door and started pounding.'

The woman and the dog got up and made it out safely. Birdsong says it was all a group effort and helping others is what they're here to do.
'This crew does that type of thing every day, they all deserve acknowledgement,' Birdsong said.
KCFD says the fire appeared to start on the exterior but got into the siding and wall. They're still investigating the cause of the fire.
