Supporters file mass petition to investigate alleged rape of Japan prosecutor by her boss
Supporters of a Japanese prosecutor allegedly raped by her boss submitted a petition with 58,000 signatures to the government on Monday calling for a thorough investigation, organisers said.
Kentaro Kitagawa, who is in his 60s, is accused of assaulting the woman at his official residence in 2018 when he headed the Osaka District Public Prosecutors Office.
The woman says she was drunk and unable to resist, and Kitagawa was arrested and charged after she came forward with her accusations last year.
At the first hearing in October Kitagawa apologised for causing "serious damage" to the woman and said he would not contest the charges.
But in December he changed course, with his lawyer telling reporters that his client was unaware that she was unable to resist and believed there was consent.
The following day the woman held a news conference — with her face hidden and not revealing her name — and broke down in tears.
"We were just a boss and a subordinate, and I was too drunk to resist at the time," local media quoted her as saying.
Her supporters submitted the petition to the justice ministry on Monday, calling for Kitagawa to be "thoroughly investigated" to give "the female prosecutor dignity, justice and honour".
"We submitted the petition but we didn't receive an immediate comment from the justice ministry official who received it," said Yukiko Yamazaki, one of supporters.
A ministry official confirmed they had received the petition.

DMW shuts down Japanese language center in Davao over illegal recruitment
The Department of Migrant Workers (DMW) has ordered the closure of another Japanese language center (JLC) in Davao City due to illegal recruitment activities. Sincere and its officials will be added to the DMW's List of Persons and Entities with a Derogatory Record. They are now facing charges related to illegal recruitment. The DMW is urging other possible victims to come forward and contact the Migrant Workers Protection Bureau through their official Facebook page to receive free legal help and support.

Japan taxi driver accused of drugging and raping 50 women
Japanese police said on Thursday they arrested a former taxi driver on suspicion of drugging and raping a woman passenger, with media reporting there could be dozens more victims. The Yomiuri Shimbun daily and Jiji Press reported that police found about 3,000 videos and images of him sexually assaulting around 50 women in his taxi or his home. Last year, the man "got a woman, then in her 20s, to take sleeping pills, which caused her to lose consciousness, took her to his home and committed an indecent act, which he filmed," a Tokyo police spokesman told AFP. Police arrested the 54-year-old on Wednesday on "suspicion of non-consensual sexual intercourse and violation of the law on punishment of filming of sexual parts," the spokesman added without elaborating further. The suspect gave the intoxicated passenger water and pills under the pretence of caring about her health, public broadcaster NHK said. Traces of sleeping pills were detected in the victim's hair, according to media reports. The footage recovered on the man's phone and other devices dated back to 2008, the reports said. Media also reported that he was arrested in October on suspicion of drugging another woman and robbing her of 40,000 yen ($280). Japanese police arrest four for selling obscene AI images
Japanese police have arrested four people for selling obscene images created using generative AI in the first crackdown of its kind, a police spokesman and local media reports said on Tuesday. The four, who allegedly made posters and sold them online, "were arrested on Monday on suspicion of selling obscene images", a Tokyo police spokesman told AFP. They sold them on auction sites several times last October, criminal acts for which they face up to two years in prison, fines of up to 2.5 million yen ($17,500), or both, he said. Public broadcaster NHK and other media outlets said the suspects used free AI software to create images of naked adult women who do not exist in the real world. They used prompts including terms such as "legs open". The four, aged in their 20s to 50s, reportedly sold the posters for several thousand yen (around $20-50) each. Tuesday's reports said the arrests were Japan's first for allegedly selling AI-created obscene images, which police could not immediately confirm. Concern is growing worldwide over the use of AI for malicious purposes including through deepfakes, which turn genuine photos, video or audio of people into false likenesses. Around 96 percent of deepfake videos online are non-consensual pornography, and most of them depict women, according to a 2019 study by the Dutch AI company Sensity.
