Oakmont 'brutal', says '94 runner-up Montgomerie
Colin Montgomerie believes this year's US Open venue Oakmont remains as "brutal" as it was for his painful play-off loss in 1994.
The Pennsylvania course, nicknamed 'The Beast', hosts the tournament for a record 10th time when play gets under way on Thursday.

"It was brutal then," Montgomerie said, reflecting on his close call 31 years ago.
The Scot surged into a second-round lead with a fantastic 65 and finished tied the regulation 72 holes for top spot on five under par with Ernie Els and Loren Roberts.
However, the former European Ryder Cup captain started badly on his way to a 78 in a fifth full round played on the Monday, with Els needing two additional holes to see off Roberts.
It was the first of five runner-up finishes in major championships for Montgomerie, with the sport's top four prizes eluding him.
"The USGA have gone back to a US Open of the 90s, which was hit the fairway, that's number one," the 61-year-old said of this week's competition.

"It's the guy that's going to play the full game of golf - which means the driver, the iron play, the chipping and the putting - that's going to win.
"Sometimes these events are more a putting competition. This isn't. This is the full game of golf. Just looking at some of the pictures, it looks absolutely brutal."
MacIntyre's game 'almost there' for major win
World number 20 Robert MacIntyre, 28, is the sole Scot in this week's US Open field.
No Scotsman has won a major since Paul Lawrie's Open glory at Carnoustie in 1999, while Edinburgh-born Tommy Armour was the last to enjoy US Open success back in 1927 - at Oakmont.

MacIntyre has five career wins and two top-10 finishes at majors.
"It's almost there," said Montgomerie of his compatriot. "Being inside the top 20 in the world you are obviously good enough to compete against the best.
"It's two shots a tournament, half a shot a round and that takes you from fifth place to a play-off or just over the line. And it's that minute difference between a Scottie Sheffler or Rory McIlroy or Xander Shauffele.
"As a top 20 player, Bob definitely has the game. He's good enough to win. If it all goes his way, he can win. We haven't said that about a Scottish golfer for a long time."

Montgomerie was speaking at the Trump International Golf resort in Aberdeen, where he will be hosting this year's PGA Seniors Championship in August.
The following week, at the same venue, the DP World Tour will stage the Scottish Championship.

And like most of his fellow competitors, he walked in virtual silence from the galleries, with only an occasional 'Go Phil!' punctuating the silence. Once the darling of the golf world — the rascally, cocky yin to Tiger Woods' steely yang — Mickelson lived a charmed life, getting himself into and out of trouble both on and off the golf course. He somehow radiated arrogant confidence while remaining a hero of the everyman. But then the Saudis came calling, and Mickelson couldn't resist their siren call, or the chance to stick it to the PGA Tour. Even though Mickelson turned out to be right about the ways the PGA Tour needed to change, the way he went about it with cynical opportunism turned the majority of his former fans against him. He's finished in second place six different times, an incredible run of almost-good-luck that's kept him from claiming the career grand slam. Matters bottomed out in 2018, when Mickelson, in frustration, hit a still-moving ball at Shinnecock en route to a T48 finish. He's missed the cut at four of the last five U.S. Opens, including the last three in a row. And as of this year, he's all out of the exemptions that he'd earned for winning the 2021 PGA Championship … meaning, if he wants back in, he'll need to either receive a special exemption from the USGA, or play his way back in. 'We hope he earns his way in, and I think he'd tell you the same thing,' USGA chief championships officer John Bodenhamer said on Wednesday. 'That's what he did last time. We gave him one, and then he went out and won the PGA Championship. So, wouldn't put it past him.' But a bogey-bogey-double start to his second nine effectively crushed his day, leaving him eight strokes behind clubhouse leader J.J. Spaun. Mickelson declined to speak to the media after he finished, and will have perhaps just one more opportunity to perform before a U.S. Open gallery. Thirty-one years ago, Arnold Palmer also bade farewell to the U.S. Open, also at Oakmont. He walked up the 18th hole to waves of applause and tears. Regardless of how his career has flickered in the last few years, Mickelson will likely receive the same treatment. It will be a well-deserved coda to his career, but you can't help but wonder what the reception would be without the last few years coloring his reputation.

The 2026 FIFA Men's World Cup is just one year away and organizers feel like they're having a "giant panic attack." Why it matters: Our region's reputation is on the line. The latest: FC Dallas president Dan Hunt shared everything organizers must finish to be ready. "The shot clock is on … it's going to go really fast now," he said during a transportation summit Thursday in Hurst. Hunt is a co-chair of the North Texas FIFA World Cup Organizing Committee. The big picture: North Texas will host nine matches, the most of any city. The region will have to arrange for security, transportation and lodging for athletes and spectators traveling to the region. 700,000 tickets will be sold for the nine matches at AT&T Stadium, Hunt said. What they're doing: Organizers will have to ensure the stadium meets FIFA's requirements for World Cup venues, including having real grass. They plan to remove the stadium's artificial grass, raise the field and create a new platform on it with sod, sand and soil. The task will require using grow lights and preparing backup fields in case more grass is needed, Hunt said. FC Dallas is renovating Toyota Stadium in Frisco for use as a base camp during the 2026 World Cup. The intrigue: The North Texas FIFA committee has also been helping the World Cup's European organizers understand Texans and their love of tailgating. Between the lines: Organizers in North Texas haven't said much about how they will get athletes, journalists, fans and workers to and from AT&T Stadium in Arlington, a suburban city without mass transit. The tournament's international broadcast center is in downtown Dallas and the fan festival will be at Fair Park. Teams could be stationed as far away as Denton. What they're saying: "My message to FIFA has been very simple: We're going to show you that you made a mistake not picking North Texas for the final," Hunt said.
