Talagi happy on slow road to preferred Panthers spot

Yahoo21-04-2025

Blaize Talagi has set his sights on being Penrith's five-eighth long into the future, adamant that with time he can replace Jarome Luai and become the perfect partner for Nathan Cleary.
The 20-year-old arrived at Penrith over the off-season, with many expecting the former Parramatta utility to instantly fill the void left by Luai.
But Talagi has had to wait his turn, initially overlooked for homegrown duo Jack Cole and Trent Toelau in Penrith's spine before being given the No. 6 jersey for the first time in their round six loss to the Dolphins.
While his first outing at five-eighth was testing, Talagi showed signs of a blossoming chemistry with Cleary and scored his maiden Panthers try in Saturday's 40-12 win over the Sydney Roosters.

"I knew I had to come in and earn my stripes, I wasn't just going to slot in straight away," said Talagi.
"I had to earn it but I think the timing's been perfect, and the more games I play the better I'll get. Everything happened the way it should've.
"It (Penrith's system) is different, it took me some time to learn but it suits me.
"If I see something, I can take it and I see plenty off the back of Nathan and Isaah (Yeo) so it's pretty cool.
"I've learnt a lot of things (from Nathan Cleary). We do video together, the little things he sees are very detailed, I love learning from him."
The Panthers' win against the Roosters snapped a run of five-straight losses to put the defending premiers at 2-5 ahead of Saturday's clash with an injury-depleted Manly.
Talagi experienced plenty of defeats in 2024, winning just four games through his debut season at the Eels.
But the Samoan international feels the Panthers' slow start to 2025 is about to pick up speed.
"Ivan knows what he's doing," Talagi said of Penrith coach Cleary.
"He's stayed the same the whole time. That gives the boys confidence knowing he hasn't lost it. He has stayed calm the whole time.
"I do think we have turned a corner.
"We do have it in us, now we're looking forward to the next couple of weeks."

Panthers can move to the verge of winning the Stanley Cup again if they beat the Oilers in Game 4

FORT LAUDERDALE, Fla. — Leading the Stanley Cup Final 2-1, the Florida Panthers can move to the verge of a second consecutive championship if they beat the Edmonton Oilers in Game 4 at home Thursday night. The Panthers were upbeat and relaxed at their final full practice before the potential swing game, with players downplaying the gravity of the situation. 'I feel like every game's so big during this time,' center Anton Lundell said Wednesday. 'The stakes gets higher. Everybody wants to win. But we both know for both teams it's a big game, and we want to be good.' They were more than good in Game 3, routing the Oilers 6-1 to take control of a series that looked evenly matched after a bunch of overtime hockey and a split in Edmonton. 'Usually you get teams' best after that, I think especially with the players they have in the room, how competitive they are, they're going to look to bounce back,' said Brad Marchand, who is tied with teammate Sam Bennett for the most goals in the final with four apiece. 'When you have that kind of leadership, they normally lead the way, those top guys. That's a dangerous combination. We have to make sure that we bring our best.' The Panthers are nearing full strength at a time of year usually known for players gutting through injuries, with Paul Maurice saying Sam Reinhart is back healthy and Matthew Tkachuk looks like he is rounding into form. The Oilers are missing Zach Hyman because of his playoff-ending wrist injury, and fellow top-line forward Ryan Nugent-Hopkins is dealing with something that is keeping him off the ice for practices and making him a game-time decision. That discrepancy could make a difference in their Cup final rematch. One thing that is the same is Florida locking in and normalizing pressure situations like this. 'Our approach, it's pretty similar the entire playoffs,' said Bennett, who leads all scorers this postseason with 14 goals. 'Whether it's Game 1 or Game 7, we play the same style. We play just as hard. We're not sitting back, so we really are not going to be changing anything in this next game or any other games to come.'

The Panthers are as healthy as can be. That's key as the Cup Final continues

When the Florida Panthers made their first of what has now become three consecutive trips to the Stanley Cup Final two years ago, they hobbled into the final series. So many key players had major injuries. Their depth wasn't where it needed to be to compensate for the losses. Naturally, they lost to the Vegas Golden Knights in five games. Fast forward, and see how things have changed. Florida stayed relatively healthy through its Cup Final run last year, which ended with its championship after knocking off the Edmonton Oilers in seven games. And this year? Florida seems to only be getting stronger as the playoffs reach the end. After getting banged up a bit during the Eastern Conference final, with three key players in forwards Sam Reinhart and A.J. Greer plus defenseman Niko Mikkola missing time in that series, the Panthers got back to full strength in Game 3 of the Stanley Cup Final, a 6-1 win against the Oilers to go up 2-1 in the best-of-7 series. 'It's very hard to win a Cup with unhealthy bodies,' Greer said entering Game 4 on Thursday. Now, the Panthers certainly aren't at 100%. No team is at this time of year. 'Everybody manages small things,' as coach Paul Maurice put it. But the fact that Florida is able to roll out its top lineup without any hiccups is only a boost to its chances to repeat. And the Panthers are showing that form throughout the Cup Final. Reinhart, who missed Games 3 and 4 in the Eastern Conference Final after taking a low hit from Carolina's Sebastian Aho, scored a goal and added an assist on Aaron Ekblad's power play goal Monday for his first points of the series. 'His game is getting stronger, quite a bit stronger,' Maurice said. 'He's back to full health now.' Greer, a staple on Florida's fourth line, battled through a lower-body injury throughout the final three games of the conference final. He left Game 3 late after tightening up, didn't play in Game 4 and missed basically all of the third period of the series-clinching Game 5. He then sat out the first two games of the Cup Final before making his series debut in Game 3 on Monday. 'Our medical guys and our training guys did an unbelievable job for me, personally, getting back to where I needed to be 100 percent,' Greer said. 'It's a 24-hour job. When you get hurt, you want to get back as quickly as you can. There were definitely doubts, where I didn't know if I was gonna be playing in the series, and certainly got me emotional when we did win that Eastern Conference game, knowing that I might not be able to play the series. I only missed two games, I'm back at it, and we're in a good position right now.' And then there's star winger Matthew Tkachuk, who missed the final 25 games of the regular season with an apparent groin injury sustained during the 4 Nations Face-Off in mid-February. Maurice eased him back into action at the start of the playoffs, particularly in the first round against the Tampa Bay Lightning, but said that Tkachuk is 'back to form now.' Tkachuk has 18 points (five goals, 13 assists) in 20 games. 'I thought his last game was his best game of the playoffs,' Maurice said. 'He moved right. ... He was out for such a very long time.' But even when Florida wasn't at full strength throughout this postseason run, it had depth it could rely on that it didn't have two years ago. The Panthers have 15 forwards and seven defensemen who are all capable of playing in the lineup on any given night. 'With our depth this year, even when guys are injured or guys are out of the lineup, there's just so much depth on our team that guys can fill in seamlessly and it doesn't change our lineup that much,' center Sam Bennett said. 'That's definitely a huge factor for us.'
