Gen Z And Millennials: To Escape Unfulfilled Careers, Start Thinking Like Contrarian Entrepreneurs

Everybody has an opinion and if you listen to all of them in making your career or even entrepreneurial decisions, you will have followed the 'wisdom' of the crowd. Which is to say, the average of everyone's thinking. Ultimately that gets you into safe, risk-free careers or startups that have a likelihood of failing. Which you may or may not enjoy. And clearly, people are not enjoying their careers.
It's not a good thing that one of the latest Gen Z job satisfaction studies published in December of 2024, showed that Gen Z had the lowest job satisfaction and highest burnout rate among all generations of workers. So, you followed the wisdom of the crowd, took that safe and secure job and look where it got you. Time for you to own your destiny. What do you do next?
Two things. Start thinking for yourself and as Steve Jobs would say, 'think different.' This is where carving your own path comes in, and instead of moving with the crowd, you need to be a 'contrarian' and potentially start thinking like an entrepreneur who questions the status quo and moves to change or disrupt things. Especially as it relates to your career or a startup.
So, what is contrarian thinking? Contrarian thinking defies 'crowd think' and uses knowledge-based thinking and curiosity to question widely accepted beliefs. You need to challenge prevailing norms. You need a store to sell books. No, you don't. Amazon. You need vehicles to create a taxi company. No, you don't. Uber. Need to build a hotel to rent rooms? No, you don't. Airbnb. So, what do you do?
You need to start paying attention to trends and identifying market gaps and untapped opportunities that others may overlook. In other words, you need to move away from crowd thinking. Why? Because historically, most people don't like change, disruption or risk as it upsets the status quo. There is safety in the crowd. Also, boredom, low job satisfaction and the beginnings of an unfulfilled career.

Here are several thoughts on how you can begin to cultivate a more contrarian mindset:

Cultivate thinking differently. First, think for yourself and quit following the crowd. Say 'why ' more often and do your own research. Contrarian people evaluate assumptions in their industry and are not afraid to challenge those existing assumptions. You don't ask yourself 'how much market share can we get'; you ask yourself, how can we build something so innovative, we can capture most of the market.
Champion your own creativity. We were all born with childlike curiosity and creativity. Where did it go? It's still there inside of you, just hidden. It's time to wake it up and nurture your creativity like a muscle. How? Adopt a growth, mindset which says you can learn what you need to be successful. Read more. Talk to people you have nothing in common with. Mingle with actual customers and see through their eyes. When you travel, pay attention to what people are doing. Talk to ten experts in their own fields and see what they see. See if you can 'connect some dots' of information to show you what's coming next.
Be willing to take risks. Why are people in general so afraid to try new things that could be awesome but might potentially fail? Fear. Well, what are you afraid of? What were you bon to do? The best things in life, whatever they might be, are not coming to you. You need to go meet them. That means, you need to start taking risks. Not foolish risks where failure potential is too high but smaller risks like meeting with people, taking the job in a growing company/industry or field, one with a mission or purpose that aligns with you. Or perhaps test that startup as a side gig to see if it has merit. But you do need to do something you actually care about.
Disruption over conforming. If a leader in an industry goes left, you investigate right. If another company says go up, you look down. No one ever got anywhere by just blindly following the herd. Most people are afraid of taking on leaders. But, if you change your point of view, find out what 'secrets' customers have or products or services they are tolerating, you might just be the next Netflix taking on a Blockbuster. It's not about just wanting to disrupt an industry leader; it's about listening to customers and giving them exactly what they need. No one who does something really well, actually knows that they will be a $1.84 trillion company one day. That is Google today. However, in their early days, they almost sold themselves to Yahoo for $1 billion dollars. Good thing they didn't.
Steal from experts. Critical thinking requires lots of knowledge and experience. But what if you don't have the experience? Then you go steal it. How? By meeting with experts, whether they are industry, product, service, technical, etc. They have two things you might need. More knowledge and most definitely experience. If you meet with ten experts and gather their knowledge, insights and experiences, you are the one person in the center of that hub who now has all that information. This could save you from making critical mistakes or give you the insight you need to make your own decisions.
Avoid competition. Market competition breeds imitation. You don't want that, as everyone just fights for the same market share and ultimately, it's a race to the bottom. Contrarian thinkers and entrepreneurs however, create new business models, products, and services that can potentially disrupt industries. They focus on creativity and innovation over just competing on price, features or scale.
As an example, Steve Jobs built Apple around contrarian principles like design-focused products, closed systems (think amazing operating system software), and customer experience over tech specs and features, defying conventional (crowd) wisdom at the time. This approach has redefined entire industries, set Apple apart, and created fanatically loyal customers willing to pay a premium for their products and services. Airbnb is another example. Rather than competing in the saturated hotel industry, Airbnb pioneered a new model of hospitality where everyday people could monetize their extra living space. This uniqueness has fueled their massive growth. And created a whole new sub-industry.

British AI entrepreneur William Tunstall-Pedoe has always been 'motivated by impact'. He started pushing the boundaries on what's possible with machines as a 13-year-old schoolboy, while Tunstall-Pedoe secretly helped create and launch Amazon's (AMZN) Alexa over a decade ago. In between, his anagram technology was used by author Dan Brown for the Da Vinci Code and he even identified the most boring date in history. The first keyboard seeds were sown at Dundee High School in Scotland where he was able to venture to the technical college next door before classes and during breaks to write computer software on its mainframe. There were financial rewards, too. His computer science teacher, Michael Ryan, had a software business which sold by mail order. However there was no taking advantage of the pupils, says Tunstall-Pedoe, with very generous royalties and a decent income on offer. Read More: Meet Britain's 'king of billboards' who sold his business for £1bn 'I kind of very arrogantly set out to try and solve this problem of using language to control machines,' he tells Yahoo Finance UK, 'to automatically answer questions, change the user experience you have when you interact with search engines, when you interact with computer software, and kind of invented some technology to tackle that.' It is 20 years since he started his search and voice recognition company True Knowledge, later called Evi Technologies. Tunstall-Pedoe charts the company as a "10-year adventure", seven as a venture-backed independent start-up before being sold to Amazon in 2012 for a reported £21m and its CEO staying on for over three years. 'When we launched, we were trying to solve the problem of basically using computers by speaking to them or with language,' he recalls. 'When you look at science fiction I watched as a child, Star Trek or Blake's 7, all the computers you just have a chat to. It understands you and is the most natural interface. This is how we interact with people. 'But when you used a computer back then, you select from a menu, click a button or you guess keywords and browse links that come back from the keyword search. So we were tackling the problem of how to use language to interact with machines, which of course is incredibly topical now because large language models (LLMs) have essentially cracked that. But we were doing this way back.' In the mid 2000s, Tunstall-Pedoe would demo his software on conversational search and recalls being told by Google (GOOG) that not only was this a worse customer experience but that keyword search was infinitely better. 'That's definitely not the case now,' says Tunstall-Pedoe, who lives in London and Cambridge, the latter a 'crazy converted church' where Spitting Image was also created. Read More: 'Why we set up a sustainable mobile operator to save people money' Evi pivoted several times as a start-up, from a search engine that answered questions to producing a voice assistant, launching at the same time as Apple's Siri. The 30-strong Cambridge outfit had multiple acquisition offers before working on a secret project for Amazon, now known as Alexa, which went to market in late 2014. He later spent a period as an angel investor backing over 100 tech start-ups before his latest venture, Unlikely AI, came into focus. The British venture, which raised nearly £15m following a seed round in 2023, is currently developing technology that combines LLMs with symbolic methods to make AI safer for companies in sectors such as healthcare to provide verifiable insights. 'How do you enable systems built with modern AI to be fully explainable, auditable, not get you into trouble with regulators, and not lead you to making business decisions that cost you lots of money?' says Tunstall-Pedoe. 'We're tackling some of the biggest problems in AI, which is how to make it completely trustworthy and how to ensure the answer is always accurate.' With the advent of ChatGPT, the inventor has admitted that most companies aren't succeeding when it comes to implementing LLMs, which learns to predict the next word, into workflows. He says: 'If you're making a business decision based on the result of an LLM and your private data, and it gives you a wrong answer, that can be really expensive financially and to your brand. If you're in a regulated industry it can get you fined. You can even get the CEO in jail in extreme cases if you break regulation really badly and this is a fundamental problem.' 'That means making it accurate, so when it gives you a result, you can trust it,' says Tunstall-Pedoe. 'Sometimes it may tell you it doesn't know rather than guess and it also means explainability and auditability, to fully explain in a very clear way how the result was created. 'Ultimately, it's also about the customer or business being in control and that's the kind of experience that we're shooting for. We're still relatively early, but we're looking to be very successful and become a very big company.' How I identified the most boring day I built this huge database of millions of facts about the world, where the system could make sense and reason with them. I thought it would be interesting to do an analysis of all the facts that the system knew, and in particular with the goal of finding what the least interesting date in history was — 11 April 1954. The story went so viral that it got told and retold and it's had new life ever since. There was a play in Germany that was kind of themed on it and all sorts of crazy things that have happened as a result of that. Entrepreneurship One of the things I love is that you can have a very significant impact as an individual if you've got an idea and you pursue it. If you build a software product that does something valuable and different, it can scale like no other product can. You can have 100 million users within a couple of months if you create a really successful piece of software, which is kind of almost impossible in almost any other industry. That's what's exciting about it, that potential for big impact if you're developing technology in the software world that really hits home. -- Tesla (NASDAQ:TSLA) stock rose 2.6%, hitting a session high on Friday after a report that the US government is taking steps to ease regulations that have hindered the deployment of self-driving vehicles without driver controls. According to Bloomberg, the Trump administration is streamlining the exemption process for automakers seeking to deploy self-driving cars designed without traditional steering wheels or brake pedals. This regulatory shift could significantly benefit Tesla's ambitions to launch its robotaxi service. The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) announced it will simplify the exemption procedure, which previously resulted in processing times that could stretch for years. In a letter posted to its website on Friday, NHTSA Chief Counsel Peter Simshauser stated the agency "anticipates reaching decisions on most exemption requests within months rather than years." Current federal safety standards effectively require new vehicles to include human driving controls, forcing companies developing autonomous vehicles to seek exemptions - a process that has created substantial delays for manufacturers. While Tesla shares climbed on the news, ride-hailing companies Uber (NYSE:UBER) and Lyft (NASDAQ:LYFT) saw their shares edge lower, potentially reflecting investor concerns about future competition from autonomous taxi services. Car buyers should be nervous about this emerging trend

If you are in the market for a new vehicle, signs suggest that the buyers' market, which thrived in the first half of the year, is coming to an end. Due to the uncertainty surrounding President Donald Trump's trade war, dealers have increased incentives to combat consumer sentiment, which has been in the tank since Trump took office. Related: Car buyers should shop these brands for the best tariff deal Nearly half of American drivers cite car expenses as the reason they can't save any money, and the average American spends about 20% of their monthly income on auto loans, fuel, insurance, and maintenance. Most financial experts cap the monthly income you should spend on a vehicle at 15%. According to a MarketWatch Guides survey, about 10% of drivers say they spend 30% of their monthly income on driving, while another 12% said they "found themselves living paycheck to paycheck due to the financial strain of their cars." So, finding the right car for the right price is the name of the game. According to a new analysis from Bank of America, this year has been good for car buyers. But things are about to take a turn. Auto sales have climbed sharply in recent months as consumers were motivated by the incentives and the need to buy vehicles before any tariff-related price increases. But Bank of America is now saying that the growth it saw in consumer vehicle loan applications has declined from its peak in April, "suggesting that 'buying ahead' has largely run its course." Bank of America expects lower-income and younger buyers to feel the most pain, as its data shows that median car payments have grown faster than new and used car prices since 2019. Shockingly, of those households with a monthly car payment, 20% have a payment over $1,000. Related: Car buyers notice a disturbing trend at the car lot Meanwhile, Baby Boomers, Gen X, and older Millennials all saw decreases in the percentage of their members paying more than $2,000 a month for their vehicles in the past few months. Gen Z and younger Millennials saw an increase in members paying over that amount. Bank of America also saw an increase in $2,000 a month auto bills among people making less than $50,000 and between $50,00 and $100,000. Meanwhile, that type of spending decreased among people making more than $100,000. "Bank of America payments data shows that overall median car payments are already more than 30% higher than the 2019 average and have now outpaced both new and used car prices, possibly as there is a push towards more expensive cars," analysts Taylor Bowley and David Tinsley wrote. However, the majority of automakers reported reducing incentive spending in May. Dealers like Volkswagen, Mazda, Land Rover, Volvo, and BMW all reduced incentive spending by more than 10%. Incentives were also notably lower month over month for Stellantis. Car buyers must consider several factors before making a purchase. Of course, the vehicle itself is only part of the expense, as it will need insurance, maintenance, and gas to run. In addition to capping your car payments at about 15% of your monthly take-home, financial experts also recommend shoppers aim for a 20% down payment, a 36 to 48-month loan term, and expenses (including insurance) at between 8% and 10% of your gross monthly income. Experts also recommend that you know your credit score and loan approval amount in advance and that you shop around with different lenders for the best rate.
