Celebrations as Ballygally Castle reaches 400-year milestone
CELEBRATIONS are on the cards at Ballygally Castle in Northern Ireland as it marks its 400-year anniversary.
The historic castle, which was built in 1625 by James Shaw, is perched along the Co. Antrim coastline.
Over the centuries it has evolved to become one of the region's most popular destinations.
It joined the Hastings Hotels group in 1966, under the ownership of Sir William Hastings.

Since then it's original features have been preserved, earning it global recognition and making it a popular destination for locals and tourists alike.
Most recently the site was recognised in Tripadvisor's 2025 Travelers' Choice Awards Best of the Best, where it placed among the top one per cent of listings worldwide.
"We're absolutely delighted with the recent Tripadvisor recognition as we unveil a series of special events and packages to mark the hotel's historic milestone,' Scott Weatherup, General Manager of Ballygally Castle, said.
'Ballygally Castle has been part of the fabric of this community for centuries, and we're incredibly grateful to our guests and local supporters who have been with us throughout the years,' he added.
A series of events planned at the Castle include a murder mystery night
The hotel has planned a series of anniversary events for 2025.
This month it will debut its own Ballygally-branded beer, created in partnership with White Water Brewery, with a historic label telling the castle's story.
'This anniversary is not only a proud moment for the hotel but also for the entire Hastings Hotels family,' Mr Weatherup said.
'It promises to be a truly memorable year, filled with unique experiences that celebrate our rich heritage and the timeless charm of the castle,' he added.

Guests at hotel blast 'chavs' & defend 'delicious' Greek food after gran's moan
Regular guests at the Corfu hotel lambasted by a British gran for its lack of so-called English grub have hit out at "pathetic chavs" leaving negative reviews. The Lido Corfu Sun Hotel on the Greek isle was thrust into the limelight this week following Susan Edwards, 69, moaning about the scarcity of chips and her frustration at constantly seeing rice. The hotel's management has since defended their menu, touting it as "generous and diverse", with a daily spread of "fresh salads, fruits, hot and cold dishes". In the wake of the controversy, guests have flocked to Tripadvisor and Google Reviews to champion the resort they adore, claiming Ms Edwards' gripes are unjust. One so incensed penned their inaugural Tripadvisor critique to label fellow holidaymakers as "pathetic chavs". This profile, freshly set-up this month apparently as a retort to the dispute, awarded the Lido Corfu Sun Hotel top marks. Their review states: "Don't listen to pathetic chavvy Brits and Poles who bought the cheapest 'all Inclusive' package in existence and demanded type of service only the most entitled and uncouth would. It's a fine, charming little place. Close to water, nice food and clean facilities. Thankfully, no British food!". Another commentator also sneaks in a sly jab at Ms Edwards' complaints, asserting the Greek cuisine is scrumptious. They, with apparent sarcasm, praised the way in which the hotel caters for Scottish visitors in their appraisal, posted mere hours after Ms Edwards' grievances hit the headlines, reports the Mirror. The traveller wrote: "Phenomenal hotel, very comfortable and well located for a relaxing holiday, we are regular visitors. Excellent all inclusive food and drink package, they really go out their way to cater for Scottish visitors. "We enjoyed draught Tennant's lager, Irn Bru was on tap (diet and full fat), square sausage on a roll at breakfast, scotch pies and bridies at lunchtime, and there was always a choice of haggis or mince 'n tatties at dinner. Tunnock's tea cakes and shortbread were available all day, along with Scottish Blend tea. The staff are lovely and cannot do enough for you. The Greek dishes are also immense, which is a bonus, as Corfu is in Greece." Praise continued on Google Reviews, where most pegged Lido Corfu Sun Hotel with top marks - five stars. One of the recent glowing reviews stated: "The food is delicious. The service is great. We arrived at 4am and at 8am we got a room and wristbands and we could use everything. On the day of departure after adding the key to the transfer itself we could use all the facilities and food. We sincerely recommend." Ms Edwards, a gran from Westerhope, Newcastle, described her holiday as "horrendous" from the moment she and her family arrived, including her two cousins, second cousin, and daughter. TUI responded to the fiasco by offering the guests €120 in holiday vouchers, with a spokesperson expressing their regret: "Our priority is to ensure customers have the best possible holiday experience, so we are sorry to hear that Ms Edwards felt dissatisfied with her holiday. We have been in touch directly with Ms Edwards to come to a resolution."
