The Oscars are 9 days away. Here are our predictions for the big night

This past Tuesday, voting for the 97th Academy Awards officially closed — and the races for the biggest awards of the night are still almost too close to call.
With a few conflicts and controversies leading up to one of the most anticipated nights of the award season, many are speculating about who will take home best picture, best actor and best supporting role.
Today on Commotion, culture critics Rad Simonpillai, Teri Hart and Jackson Weaver join host Elamin Abelmahmoud for a special episode, recorded in front of a live audience, to talk about their predictions for the 2025 Oscars, and the politics of award campaigns.

Elamin: By all accounts, Emilia Perez did have the momentum heading into the Oscars. It wins best picture at the Golden Globes despite all the criticisms about the representation of the trans character, despite the criticisms about the representation of Mexico. You and I did a podcast called TIFF in 12 when TIFF was happening…. What I want to get to is what Teri said on that show, because Teri was like, "I think this might be the greatest movie ever made," or something?
Teri: I loved it. I fully loved it.
Elamin: Look, there's not a lot of people who are still willing to be like, " Emilia Perez, that movie bangs," and I respect you for that.
Teri: The tense was loved.
Elamin: Right, because the vibe has shifted a little bit. How would you say all the controversies surrounding this movie have maybe shifted how you see it?
Teri: Well, it's not winning best picture. I'll say that — not in my heart, either. So yeah, I saw it at TIFF and I loved it.… I went hard for Emilia Perez for a really long time.
Elamin: I don't want to pretend like you're the only one. I loved it too. I had the exact same kind of reaction. And I can't believe that I'm out here saying this on public radio, but it's fine.
Teri: And I will say that it seems I have blind spots. I mean, I watch this movie as a cisgender white woman, and what I saw was a spectacle. And I love spectacles. I love a big swing of a movie, and Emilia Perez is a big swing of a movie. Then I heard from the transgender community, and I still was like, OK, I hear that. I've always believed that one movie can't represent an entire community. And I did believe that Karla Sofía Gascón took on this role, and she herself is a trans woman, and I thought that should count for something. And so my narrative was becoming muted.… And then we hear from Mexican people, and we hear about the whole thing being shot in France and never being in Mexico.… Those things do matter to the movie. Who makes movies matter, how they tell those stories matter and I have had to step back.
And then the Karla Sofía Gascón tweets, which are just so reprehensible. And then to think that she tried to make an apology that didn't even come close to an apology? It's all frankly been a disaster, and not a disaster in a way that is just about the movie. It is a disaster in a way that matters to the world and how we look at entertainment. And when we're looking at entertainment that is supposed to be enlightening us in some way, that is supposed to be changing the narrative and how we look at things, this ends up being a really big problem. I'm very sad for a movie that I think actually had some really great film qualities in it, that this is what it's ended up being. But you cannot ignore that that is what Emilia Perez has ended up being.
Elamin: Jackson, whose race is it to lose at this point?
Jackson: It's the most boring answer, but Anora. It's the one that is almost definitely going to run away with it, and not necessarily for super happy reasons…. I mean, so many of these movies at this festival, as Rad noted, have this kind of stink of controversy surrounding them, or other ones that aren't necessarily as glowing or amazing. A Complete Unknown, I will defend that movie, but it's still kind of like a "dad" movie. There's not much there that's gonna get you, like cheering in the street…. It's good, but it's not going to change your life. I'm Still Here? Good, not going to change your life. Conclave? Fun, popcorn movie.
These movies aren't necessarily things that are going to change cinema for years and years. And while Emilia Perez, I was a hater, it was changing people. It was affecting people. Now that that is dead in a ditch in a town burning for 100 years, the only one that has some semblance of, like, infecting people with emotion are on one hand, The Substance, but horror winning best picture? Probably pretty unlikely. And the other one, Anora. It's good enough that it's not evil.

Titled 'From Rabid to Skinamarink: Canadian Movie Madness,' the showcase with TIFF Cinematheque will run from July 9 to 13 at TIFF Lightbox at 350 King St. W. The Toronto International Film Festival says del Toro's picks celebrate 'influential horror films made north of the 49th parallel, featuring iconic and boundary-pushing films by David Cronenberg, Bruce McDonald, and Vincenzo Natali.' They include include Rabid (1977), Cube (1997), Ginger Snaps (2000), Pontypool (2008), and Skinamarink (2022). Del Toro, who was born in Mexico, divides his time between Toronto and Los Angeles, and frequently takes to social media to share his love for the city. His filmography includes a number of movies filmed in the Toronto and Hamilton area – including the Oscar-winning The Shape of Water – and he runs a studio out of three adjacent apartments in the city's east-end. TIFF will also host a free, outdoor screening of The Shape of Water on July 8 at Harbourfront Centre at 235 Queens Quay W., as part of the film festival's 50th anniversary celebrations this summer.

Social Sharing Arguably the heaviest hitter in this year's summer blockbuster lineup is Mission: Impossible – The Final Reckoning. The eighth movie in the franchise just landed in theatres, and it picks up where Mission: Impossible – Dead Reckoning Part One left off a couple years ago. Tom Cruise is back leading as special agent Ethan Hunt, whose latest impossible mission finds him trying to take down an AI enemy technology called the Entity. For 30 years, the Mission: Impossible franchise has promised audiences a fun night out at the movies. But does this latest — and perhaps final — installment deliver? Today on Commotion, culture critics Teri Hart, Rebecca Jennings and Eli Glasner join host Elamin Abdelmahmoud to get into the highs and lows of Mission: Impossible – The Final Reckoning. We've included some highlights below, edited for length and clarity. WATCH | Today's episode on YouTube: Elamin: Eli, the idea that this movie is weighted by the legacy of the franchise itself — eight movies, bajillions of dollars made — that's interesting to me. So walk me through the franchise and then arriving at this moment in the franchise. Eli: The problem with this film is that it takes itself so seriously. When Mission: Impossible started, let's remember: this was a remake of a kind of wacky TV show where people had disguises, and the main gambit when the Mission: Impossible movies started with Cruise was they had masks…. That was fine. That was nice. So it was basically like an off-brand James Bond. Like, "OK, Bond's got that thing covered — he's suave, he's international. We don't have that. We're gonna get Cruise to run around. Things are going to explode. He's going to get his gang of friends," and it was fine…. It was just fun. Elamin: But it got bigger. Eli: But then it got bigger. And I think the problem is, it got to this point where they didn't remember what we enjoyed about it. It wasn't an event when Mission: Impossible movies started, but it was fun. Like in between the various Bond films, check out a Mission: Impossible, and it was a good time. But now, it's so reverential— Elamin: He's carrying the box office on his back, Eli! Eli: But he's not. The problem of the film is that it treats it like he is, and like this is the most important thing in the world. Even the plot now is so nonsensical that there's no enjoyment anymore. The problem is they assume that we have a level of interest and knowledge of the franchise. Like, there's a bad guy, Gabriel — I can barely remember his backstory. They're doing all these callbacks! Elamin: I don't want continuity. Like, please, this is Mission: Impossible we're doing here. Eli: I didn't do my Mission: Impossible homework. I just went in kind of blind, and they're pulling all these things … I don't remember. The movies are all convoluted on their own, and now to try and weave together 30 years of shenanigans — there's so much gravitas, it's like we're on Jupiter. It is so solemn. It is so reverential. Elamin: Rebecca, we come to this place for magic, you know? There's something to be said about the escalating scale of the Mission: Impossible movies…. The gambit was, this will be a good time at the movies. You're not going to remember the plot. You don't need to remember who Gabriel is. But you will remember the stunts. You'll remember the thing as an event. For you, as you were sort of walking in and being like, "I'm saying goodbye to this universe." Did you feel the weight of that watching this movie? Rebecca: Well, I think the movie really wants you to feel the weight of that…. The first hour is mostly flashbacks or flash-forwards. The point of a Mission: Impossible movie is you go into the theatre, and then it all completely erases from your brain the moment you step out of it. Elamin: The minute you leave, it's gone. Rebecca: And that's why I love Mission: Impossible. But even though the movie was so divorced from reality in any stake sense, and it had to keep reminding you about what the timing was, but it's like, oh, that's not really the time. I think because this one was so weighed down by the myth of Mission: Impossible, which no one really cares about — it's not like a Marvel or a Harry Potter movie, you don't have to watch the previous ones to get it. But I think if they're calling this the final one, then great, wipe the slate clean. Start a new thing with the same name. But don't make us care about Gabriel, and Tom Cruise's 75 love interests over 30 years. Like, the way they kept flashing back to these various women that Tom Cruise has kissed, I'm like, who was that? Elamin: Well, the whole thing was that he was trying to protect his wife at the end of the first one…. You guys don't remember that? That's crazy to me. Rebecca: The fact that he had a wife, I'm like, what? This is like, just insert some brunette lady; that's his love interest. Watching movie stars do crazy stunts, that will never get old. But you don't need the Entity and Gabriel and the wives to do that. Elamin: "The Entity and Gabriel and the Wives" sounds like a great sequel, by the way, if any executive is listening.

Gavin Matts spends nights in New York comedy clubs and days auditioning for acting roles

Vancouver native Gavin Matts feels right at home in New York. 'I just like the walking and the city life. In terms of being a comedian , it kind of feels the same as it did when I was starting out in Vancouver , when I was going to the Comedy Mix every night and just trying to get up as much as possible,' said the 30-year-old who has called N.Y. home for seven years. Now Matts, who was named to Vulture Magazine's list of ' Comedians You Should and Will Know' in 2024, frequents Big Apple comedy clubs like the Comedy Cellar and Standup NY. 'I'm out every night. So that's pretty much my life,' said Matts, who has been doing standup for 12 years. When he isn't onstage in a club, Matts is busy auditioning for acting roles. He has been in a few short films and shown up in the TV series Ramy and the feature film Easter Sunday. His most notable turn as of late has been as Elliot, one of the writers in the writer's room for Deborah Vance's (Jean Smart) new late-night talk show on the popular HBO (Crave in Canada) series Hacks, which wraps its fourth season on May 29. 'A lot of comedians that I talked to had taped auditions for it,' said Matts about the Hacks' role. 'It's kind of nice to be on the receiving end of, 'Oh, you got that,' because it's happened to me so many times. I've done hundreds of auditions and this is definitely the longest I've been on a show. It's nice that it's a show about comedy on TV.' A show about relationships, Hacks is focused on Vance, an iconic Las Vegas-based standup comedian who is looking to reinvent herself into a relevant voice of the times. To help her freshen her act, she hires Ava Daniels (Hannah Einbinder), a Gen Z comedy writer. The two slowly bond and butt heads. This current season has the two at odds as Daniels runs the writing room for Vance's new show. The show is a darling of the critics and has won multiple Golden Globes and Emmy Awards. 'The show is very funny. (It's) the only show that I'm actually straight-up laughing at that is a narrative TV comedy,' said Matts. 'Just being a part of something that is actually funny is rare … I don't have to lie and be like, 'I like the show,' because I genuinely do.' Matts said while shooting the show and watching Smart, whose performance in the series has earned her a pair of Golden Globes and an Emmy, he had to remind himself he was an actor in the series not an audience member with a great seat. 'I was like, 'Oh yeah, I am having to listen to her as an actor,' ' said Matts. 'She's coming off an Emmy. She had just done SNL, like, two nights before, and she's delivering this monologue perfectly. I had to be like, 'OK, active listening. I'm acting right now, and I'm not just mouth agape,' because I caught myself with my mouth a little open, being like, 'Oh, damn, I get to be a part of this,' which is awesome.' Matts had an early go at film school. But only a few months in, he discovered open mic nights at Goldies Pizza in downtown Vancouver, and he was hooked. Not long after his first open mic, Matts won a radio station contest and got to perform at Pemberton Music Festival opening for the Trailer Park Boys. 'That was three months in, and so I was like, 'That's a sign,' ' said Matts. 'It did move fast. I started getting a lot of spots at the Comedy Mix. That place pretty much changed my life.' Matts went on to become the youngest winner of Canada's SiriusXM Top Comic Competition in 2017 at age 22. He used the prize money to get a visa to work in the U.S. Once south of the border, he was getting gigs, including a spot on Conan. He also landed on the radar of comedy heavyweight Bill Burr. 'I had done a set for Comedy Central when I first moved to the States in 2018, and he was doing a show with them (The Ringers),' said Matts. 'He picked me for that show, and then that's how I kind of started having a working relationship with him. I talk to him here and there. He's always very generous with his time and advice.' Burr and his company, All Things Comedy, produced Matts's debut special, Progression, released in October 2023 and available to watch on YouTube. Matts has also made his own films, including the short film Slice of Life, which is dedicated to the Vancouver gallery of the same name. He is in the 2024 Ethan Godel-directed short film Sleep Talking, which won the Best Short Film Award at the 2025 Canadian Film Festival. In April, Matts was a guest on WTF with Marc Maron , an OG podcaster and very successful standup and actor. Maron can be seen in the Vancouver-shot and Owen Wilson-starring Apple TV+ series Stick, which premiers June 4. 'I look up to him a lot,' said Matts. 'It's such a rare thing to get older and still be current and with it. I think he's one of the few that does a good job at that. I think it's because he's introspective and has empathy for others. I have a lot of respect for him.' Matts is currently busy working on a new hour of comedy, auditioning for more acting roles and pitching his own half-hour comedy show. When asked if he will be coming back to Vancouver to perform any time soon, he said an emphatic no and explained that the current U.S. immigration situation isn't something he wants to mess with. 'My green card has been processing, so I'm just not coming until that is done,' said Matts, who was last here a year-and-a-half ago. Matts, whose comedy leans into the darker corners of existence, says the often-bewildering state of the American reality is sometimes tough to crack wise about. 'I've been thinking about this a lot, and actually had a conversation about it this morning with a friend,' said Matts when asked if troubling times are good for comedy. 'I think that it's bad for me, personally, because I do carry a lot of anxiety around everything going on … It is funny to be like, experiencing what you feel like is a complete economic collapse and total collapse, and then have to be going out every night and being like, 'Haha.'
