Cannes Caméra d'Or Winner Anthony Chen Begins Production on ‘We Are All Strangers,' Completing His ‘Growing Up' Trilogy (EXCLUSIVE)

Yahoo18-05-2025

Exactly 12 years after winning the Caméra d'Or at Cannes with his debut feature 'Ilo Ilo,' Singaporean filmmaker Anthony Chen has begun production on 'We Are All Strangers,' the third and final film in his acclaimed 'Growing Up' trilogy.
The project reunites Chen with actors Yeo Yann Yann and Koh Jia Ler, who starred in both previous installments of the trilogy, 2013's 'Ilo Ilo' and 2019's 'Wet Season.' Set in contemporary Singapore and spanning two and a half years, the film is Chen's most ambitious work yet – an epic story capturing intimate moments of love, life, and coming of age in the city-state.

'I filmed Jia Ler at 11 and then again at 17, so it felt like a natural step to capture him approaching adulthood,' Chen said of his continuing collaboration with the young actor.
The director explained his thematic focus: 'I have always been fascinated by the bonds and intimate connections struck between strangers and how kinship can develop beyond blood ties. The idea of constructed families is a theme I have explored in both of my films. In 'Ilo Ilo,' it was between the Filipino maid and the young Singaporean boy she cares for, while in 'Wet Season,' a teacher and her student form a family unit with her half-paralysed father-in-law. This time, strangers are forced to become family.'
Yeo, who won Golden Horse Awards for her performances in both previous films (best supporting actress for 'Ilo Ilo' and best actress for 'Wet Season'), recently appeared in the Netflix action film 'Havoc' alongside Tom Hardy and Forest Whitaker. Koh has earned two Golden Horse nominations for his work in Chen's earlier films.
'We Are All Strangers' is produced by Chen and Teoh Yi Peng through their Singapore-based production company Giraffe Pictures, with backing from the Singapore Film Commission and the MPA APSA Academy Film Fund. Principal photography is currently underway in Singapore and scheduled to complete by the end of May.
Chen has built a varied résumé since his breakthrough. Following 'Ilo Ilo' and 'Wet Season' (both of which represented Singapore as official submissions for the Academy Awards), he made his English-language debut with 'Drift,' starring Cynthia Erivo, which premiered at Sundance in 2023. That same year, his first Chinese-language feature 'The Breaking Ice' premiered in Un Certain Regard at Cannes and became Singapore's Oscar submission.
As a producer through his Giraffe Pictures banner, Chen has nurtured other Asian filmmakers' work, including Kirsten Tan's Sundance winner 'Pop Aye' (2017), He Shuming's 'Ajoomma' (2022), Sorayos Prapapan's 'Arnold Is a Model Student' (2022), Neo Sora's 'Happyend' (2024), and Tumpal Tampubolon's 'Crocodile Tears' (2024).
Giraffe Pictures, co-founded by Chen and producer Huang Wenhong, positions itself as 'a home for emerging filmmakers in Asia' with the goal of becoming 'an international label for the best of Asian cinema, focusing on cinematic creativity and vision, telling unique Asian stories that will resonate with a global audience.'

Pop Air till 31 Aug at MBS with 17 new interactive works

The world's largest event on air and inflatable installations has arrived in Singapore with 17 new interactive works by leading artists. From 7 Jun to 31 Aug, the Balloon Museum presents Pop Air – Art is Inflatable at the Sands Expo & Convention Centre Hall F. An adult (above 18 years old) and a child (4 to 12 years old) ticket will set you back by S$45 and S$35 respectively from Mon to Fri. An adult (above 18 years old) and a child (4 to 12 years old) ticket will cost S$60 and S$45 respectively on the weekend. Check out these highlights. Hypercosmo represents the heart of the Pop Air exhibition. The Hyperstudio collective takes us to a new macrocosm, a re-imagining of a natural environment in which the upper and lower parts are in direct communication and involve what is at the centre of it all: man. Projections, sounds and different elements accompany the experience: the sky, the sea and the earth merge until they mingle for the spectacle of the cycle of life. The viewer is invited to immerse and be lulled by a natural environment, becoming an integral part of the piece. Committed to creating interactive artworks that engage the senses and strengthen ties with the public, ENESS created an original work called Spiritus Sonata for Pop Air. 'Spiritus' can be translated into 'breath' or 'crucial breath,' and 'Sonata' as 'musical composition'. Evoking the magical ambience of early childhood discoveries, Spiritus Sonata envelops us, provoking surprise and tenderness. With its charming aesthetic, these wind instruments utilise air to inflate their structures. This enables sounds to be created from the nasal extensions. The layers of sound overlap, surrounding visitors in a vibratory continuum. Soft Hurricane by Quiet Ensemble is an installation that transports the audience into a world of wonder and interaction. In this piece of art, invisible tornadoes orchestrate an ensemble of balloons that dance in the air, propelled and captured by the force of the wind. The balloons float individually and come together in synchronised dances as pairs. They sometimes repel each other as if animated by mysterious yet tangible forces. This artwork is inspired by the natural element of air and comprises spherical balloons that float vertically. These are driven by air coming from hidden fans placed beneath each balloon. i Light Singapore 2025 returns from 29 May to 21 Jun with 17 new installations The post Pop Air till 31 Aug at MBS with 17 new interactive works appeared first on

With its unforgettable character design and hilarious episodes, Crayon Shin Chan is a popular figure in the cartoon world. With the Crayon Shin Chan Pop-up Cafe opening on 19 Jun, you can see him jiggling away in real life. The pop-up cafe will be taking place at Wong Fufu, which you may remember from last year's Miffy Hotpot event. If you're a real aficionado, though, you'll know the actual selling point of the entire series. Of course, I'm talking about his jiggly cheeks, and yes, it's the central theme of the Crayon Shin Chan Pop-up Cafe's menu. Feast your eyes and your stomach on the carefully shaped Japanese Seafood Curry Rice (S$23.90). With fried calamari, prawns and other seafood ingredients on a bed of fresh lettuce, this curry isn't just serving looks here. Though the carrots and cheese slices are shaped like stars, we all know who's the true star of this plate! We all know what captured our attention when reading this article: the Piak! Piak! Shinchan Butt Japanese Parfait (S$12.90). Shin Chan's bazookas aren't the only things that are thick here, because this parfait is stacked with 6 indulgent layers. Hidden beneath that voluptuous pudding is a soft vanilla sponge, strawberries, cream, cornflakes, and caramel crumble. Do you know what else is soft and chewy? The Tater Tots with Taiwan Mochi Balls (S$13.90). Fried to a perfect golden brown, these spheres of sweet potato are crisp on the outside and springy within. Served in the adorable box of Shin Chan's favourite snacks are the Sweet Potato Fries with Taiwan Plum Powder (S$12.90) and Truffle Fries with Truffle Mayo Dip (S$14.90). Take your pick of sweet-and-sour or savoury creaminess, but don't forget to snap a pic before you devour it all! To wash it all down, have an Iced Matcha Latte (S$9.90), Iced Chocolate (S$9.90) or Iced Strawberry Matcha Latte (S$10.90). They're served in adorable Shin Chan cups that look a little shocked — probably because of how good the matcha is! If you don't know what to do on 19 Jun, now you do. Head on down fast, because Wong Fufu has yet to announce an end date for the Crayon Shin Chan Pop-up Cafe.
