Small indie publishers of Kannada books form association, aim to revive Bengaluru Book Festival

The Hindu22-04-2025

Small indie publishers of Kannada books have joined hands with booksellers and writers to form a new association, 'Karnataka Booksellers, Publishers and Writers Association,' aiming to revive the Bengaluru Book Festival and organise similar book festivals in other districts regularly.
The new association will be inaugurated on Wednesday. Noted independent publishers like Aharnishi, Pallava, Ruthumana, Akruthi, Jeerunde have already become members of the Association.
'Now, there are two such associations already. But both associations are dominated by big publishers and small indie publishers like us, neither has a say nor any space in those associations. Our issues and requirements are different. New and small publishers like ours need professional workshops, access to distribution networks, among others. The existing associations do not focus on these issues,' said N. Dhananjaya of Jeerunde Prakashana and Beetle Book Shop, Secretary of the new association.
'The two existing associations only have publishers and don't include booksellers and writers. We think we need to include the entire ecosystem to work effectively,' he said.
'We intend to organise workshops for publishers on professional aspects of publishing like printing, online sales, selling translation and adaptation rights for the books we publish, among other issues. As an association, we want to see whether we can also create a distribution network and make it available to our members. For instance, presently, no Kannada publishers go to book fairs across the country or abroad. We want to represent all our publishers at such fairs. This may help our books get picked up for translation,' said Guruprasad D.N., of Akruthi Books and President of the new association.
As part of their objective to provide a distribution network for publishers, the association wants to revive Bengaluru Book Festival, which was an annual feature earlier and has been not held since the pandemic.
'Book festivals are a very big source of revenue for book publishers and booksellers. Presently, the only such avenue is the Kannada Sahitya Sammelana. We want to hold talks with the government and revive the Bengaluru Book Festival this year, if possible. Many districts in the state do not have a single bookshop. Holding book exhibitions in districts will help us reach untapped readership,' Mr. Guruprasad said.

Poojary asks banks to lend for creation of self-employment

Kota Srinivas Poojary, Udupi-Chikkamagalur MP, has asked banks to give priority for lending to schemes like Pradhan Mantri Mudra Yojana (PMMY) to create more self-employment. Speaking at the District Consultative Committee and District Level Review Committee meeting for banking development in Udupi on Saturday Mr. Poojary said economy grew when more people are self-employed. The MP asked banks to instruct its employees to speak with customers in Kannada at branches. If no Kannada speaking officials are posted, it should ensure that Kannada knowing employees are deputed from other branches to deal with customers in Kannada. Mr. Poojary said that while lending under PM Vishwakarma Yojana, Udupi district secured second position in Karnataka. Efforts should be made to take the district to the top position as prominent nationalised banks took birth in the coastal belt. He said that under the Union and State government schemes, financial assistance and benefits should reach the common people without any inconvenience being caused at the banks. More people should be enrolled under the Pradhan Mantri Jeevan Jyoti Bima Yojana (PMJJBY) and Pradhan Mantri Suraksha Bima Yojana (PMSBY), which are the social security schemes, he said. Any problems faced while providing financial assistance should be resolved promptly to ensure achievement of the set targets, he told bankers. According to the statistics placed by the lead bank in the meeting, Udupi district achieved 86.28 % of its agriculture credit target during 2024-25. When it came to lending to the MSME sector, 91.08 % of the target was achieved in the last financial year. The data showed that the district achieved 95.50 % target in advancing to education and 85.37 % progress in lending to housing sector. The Chief Executive Officer of Udupi Zilla Panchayat Prateek Bayal participating in the meeting said that lending to priority sector, as per RBI guidelines, needs to be increased. Women from self-help groups seeking financial help to start small businesses should be encouraged. ''They should be given proper guidance about the schemes and documents needed, and no application should be rejected by the banks,' he said.

Banks must protect govt incentive funds from loan deductions: Melukote MLA

Mandya: Melukote MLA Darshan Puttannaiah urged that bank managers write to their central offices requesting the installation of software that prevents govt incentive funds from being deducted for loan repayments. Once a loan is taken from a bank, the EMI amount is automatically deducted from the account on the scheduled date each month, he said. Speaking at a meeting with various bank managers at the DC's office here, he said when the govt provides incentive funds to farmers or citizens, and they are automatically adjusted towards loan EMIs, people have to visit the bank and request a reversal to their subsidy accounts. However, only about 3% of the population have the capacity to approach banks and raise such issues, which is why a software solution is essential. He emphasized that banks function because of customers. Many poor farmers in rural areas are bank customers, and bank staff must treat them with respect. Deputy commissioner Kumara said various govt-provided benefits—like social pensions, milk incentives, Anna Bhagya, Gruha Lakshmi funds, MGNREGA wages, and crop loss compensation—should not be deducted for loan repayments, out of humanitarian concern. He urged the bank staff to communicate in Kannada, especially since Mandya is a district of farmers. Though many bank officials and managers know Kannada, they often speak in English or Hindi. This attitude must change, he said. He also pointed out the scheme that offers a 3% interest rebate to farmers who repay their crop loans within the stipulated time, and asked the banks to make farmers aware of this benefit.
