Charles Ray selected for new Vigo County magistrate post

Vigo County judges have appointed Charles Ray to the county's new magistrate position, Vigo Superior Court Division 1 Judge Charles Johnson said Monday.
Ray's start date will be July 1.
Ray's appointment came on the heels of passage of House Bill 1144 in May, which reduced or added a number of judicial posts based on county judges' work loads.
Vigo County was allowed to add one position, that of a magistrate of general jurisdiction.
'Prior to this bill, Vigo County had a juvenile court magistrate that was only able to handle juvenile issues such as Child In Need of Services cases and paternity cases,' Johnson said last month. 'With the addition of a general jurisdiction magistrate, we are able to provide relief to the court system by reallocating some of the case load from the juvenile magistrate to this new position.'
The magistrate will also be able to oversee criminal cases.
'The case load allocation plan is still being worked on by the judges, but we do feel that this new magistrate will be of a great help to the court system,' Johnson said.
Ray was born in Cincinnati and raised in West Terre Haute. He is a graduate of Wabash College and received his law degree from Ohio Northern University Pettit College of Law.
When Charles returned to Terre Haute, he joined the law firm of Cox, Zwerner, Gambill and Sullivan, representing clients in various civil matters.
After several years in practice, Charles was hired by the Vigo County Prosecutor's Office in May of 2017 and worked as a deputy prosecutor.

Federal court hears challenge to Confederate monuments funded by taxpayers in Florida

Confederate monuments are once again at the center of legal and public debate in Jacksonville, this time inside a federal courtroom. Former attorney Earl Johnson Jr. is asking the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Eleventh Circuit to revive his 2021 lawsuit, which aims to stop the city and state from using public funds to preserve Confederate tributes on taxpayer-owned property. Johnson, who is the son of a civil rights attorney who once represented Dr. Martin Luther King Jr., argues that public symbols honoring the Confederacy are not just relics, but represent government-backed white supremacy that violates the Civil Rights Act of 1964. >>> STREAM ACTION NEWS JAX LIVE <<< 'The purpose of this court in terms of my case is to lay out the ground rules – where does the state stand? Where does the city stand, as it relates to Confederate monuments?' Johnson said. The lawsuit, originally dismissed last year due to lack of standing, lists Mayor Donna Deegan and more than 30 Confederate-related memorials, plaques, and names statewide. Outside the federal courthouse on Hogan Street, demonstrators rallied in support of the case. Protesters held signs and chanted calls for change, saying the monuments inflict ongoing harm, particularly on Jacksonville's Black residents. 'These are modern-day 'whites only' signs,' Johnson said. 'They tell me, as a Black man, that I'm not worthy — that I'm a second-class citizen.' [DOWNLOAD: Free Action News Jax app for alerts as news breaks] Kelly Frazier with the Northside Coalition of Jacksonville joined the rally and said the monuments are more than just statues. 'They're symbols of hate. They're shrines to rebellion that fought to keep our ancestors in chains,' Frazier said. A courtroom sketch captured a look inside the federal hearing. A decision from the appeals court could take weeks or months. Action News Jax reached out to Mayor Donna Deegan's office for comment. A spokesperson responded, 'We decline to comment on the pending lawsuit.' Mike Johnson says he hopes Trump, Musk 'reconcile' amid ongoing feud

Speaker Mike Johnson, R-La., said he hopes President Donald Trump and Elon Musk "reconcile" after a furious public feud over Republicans' "one big, beautiful bill." "I was with the president in the Oval Office yesterday afternoon as some of this was unfolding, and I can tell you, as he said in his own words, he was just, he was disappointed, and I was surprised by Elon's sudden opposition," Johnson told reporters on Friday. "I believe in redemption. That's part of my worldview, and I think it's good for the party and the country if all that's worked out." Then, without addressing Musk directly, Johnson appeared to chide him for attacking Trump. Meet The Trump-picked Lawmakers Giving Speaker Johnson A Full House Gop Conference "I'll tell you what, do not doubt and do not second guess and don't ever challenge the President of the United States, Donald Trump. He is the leader of the party, he's the most consequential political figure of this generation, in probably the modern era, and he's doing an excellent job for the people," Johnson said. Read On The Fox News App Asked whether he'd spoken to Musk since the tirade, Johnson said earlier Friday morning, "We exchanged texts, but I'm not going to talk about the content of it." Johnson also said Republicans were unfazed by the criticism coming from the tech billionaire often called the richest man in the world. Mike Johnson, Donald Trump Get 'Big, 'Beautiful' Win As Budget Passes House "Members are not shaken at all. We are going to pass this legislation on our deadline, and we're very bullish about it," he said. White House press secretary Karoline Leavitt told Fox News Digital when asked about Johnson's call for unity, "President Trump is focused on making our country great again and passing the One Big Beautiful Bill." Trump told Fox News' Bret Baier in an interview on Friday that he was not interested in speaking with Musk, nor was he worried about Musk's threat to launch a third political party. "Elon's totally lost it," the president said. Musk accused Republicans of not working hard enough to cut federal spending with their budget reconciliation bill, which is aimed at advancing Trump's priorities on tax cuts, immigration, energy, defense and the debt limit. The Tesla CEO called out Trump, Johnson and Senate Majority Leader John Thune, R-S.D., all by name as well.
