
Despite promising climate research, ‘wolves won't be back in Scotland anytime soon' say experts
Reintroducing wolves to Scotland could help native woodland to expand and combat climate change, a new study by researchers at the University of Leeds concludes.
Central Europe has already seen several environmental success stories as wolf populations have 'naturally recovered' without a formal reintroduction.
Wolves roamed freely around Britain for many centuries, as chronicled by Roman and later Saxon writers, but were hunted to extinction in Scotland around 250 years ago.
Despite this first-of-a-kind study, local rewilding charities in the UK are dubious that wolves are the best approach to mitigate carbon emissions, particularly with concerns over human conflict and the coexistence of predators and prey.
Richard Bunting, a spokesperson for UK rewilding charities Trees for Life and Rewilding Britain, says that the new study is 'much-needed research', particularly when looking at the 'significant positive impact on woodland expansion and carbon storage'.
But, he adds, 'substantial stakeholder and public engagement would be essential before any wolf reintroduction could be considered.'
Wolves would help expand native woodland by managing red deer populations
The recent University of Leeds study used a predator-prey model to determine the impact of reintroducing wolves to four areas classed as 'Scottish Wild Land' in the Cairngorms and the Scottish Highlands. In these areas red deer eat tree saplings and, in turn, suppress the natural regeneration of woodland.
It's the first time such a study, which was published in the journal Ecological Solutions and Evidence, has looked at how reintroducing wolves impacts woodland expansion and carbon storage in the UK.
Even with local management measurements, red deer in Scotland have flourished in the last century without any natural predators to keep their numbers in check. The current population is estimated to be around 400,000.
This has led to a long-term decline and loss of native woodland - just 4 per cent of Scotland is covered, which is one of the lowest figures in Europe.
The team found that the wolf population would naturally grow to 167 wolves, which in turn could control red deer populations to a level that would allow trees to regenerate naturally.
This would allow native woodland to expand to an area that could capture one million metric tonnes of CO2 each year. Storing this much carbon would meet about 5 per cent of the British woodland carbon removal target, recommended by the UK's Climate Change Committee as necessary to reach net zero by 2050.
Based on the research team's model, each wolf would be responsible for an annual carbon uptake capability of 6,080 metric tonnes of CO2, meaning under current carbon valuations, each wolf would be worth £154,000 (€185,231).
Climate and nature recovery go hand-in-hand says expert
The lead author of the report, Professor Dominick Spracklen from the University of Leeds' School of Earth and Environment, highlighted that 'the climate and biodiversity crises cannot be managed in isolation.'
"We need to look at the potential role of natural processes such as the reintroduction of species to recover our degraded ecosystems and these in turn can deliver co-benefits for climate and nature recovery."
The study also mentions other benefits to reintroducing wolves, such as fewer deer-related traffic collisions, reducing the cost of deer culls, and less risk of Lyme disease.
One surprising benefit of recovering wolf populations in Europe is ecotourism. Spain now has a thriving wolf-watching tourism industry and accounts for 46 per cent of overnight stays in the mountain range of Sierra de la Culebra. There is also potential for this to happen in Scotland.
Europe has seen a dramatic wolf recovery in the last decade
Once the top predator species in Europe, wolves were hunted and persecuted to extinction in Western Europe. Small populations remained in areas of Italy, Poland, and Bulgaria.
Despite this Europe has seen a huge increase in its wolf population in recent years. This is not due to any official reintroduction, but rather a 'natural recovery', says Rewilding Europe.
In the 1990s, wolf hunting was banned in Poland. The native wolf population has grown over the last few decades, spreading west to areas of Germany and even the Netherlands, Denmark, and France.
The total wolf population is now increasing across Western Europe by about 25 per cent each year and is thought to exceed 12,000, occupying 67 per cent of their historical territory.
With more public acceptance of the predators, European legislation has also grown to protect them against poaching and exploitation. In a recent survey of 10,000 Europeans, 68 per cent of Europeans said that wolves should be strictly protected and 72 per cent agreed that they have a right to co-exist.
In addition to red deer, wolves also prey on roe deer, and to a lesser extent, wild boar and beavers.
However, while there are concerns that they prey on livestock in some situations, a 2018 study suggested that wolves kill around 31,000 livestock in Europe each year, mostly in areas where the availability of natural prey is low. EU data shows that wolves kill only about 50,000 of Europe's 68 million sheep and goats each year.
Wolves may not be the most suitable species for reintroduction to Scotland
The idea to reintroduce wolves to the Scottish Highlands first began in the late 1960s. It gained wider publicity after the successful reintroduction of both red wolf and grey wolf species into North American national parks in the late 1980s to mid-1990s.
However, most discussions around reintroducing apex predators to Scotland – and particularly wolves – come with many objections within rural communities, particularly from estate gamekeepers, livestock farmers, and deer stalkers.
There have also been concerns that wolves pose a danger to humans, yet in Europe, there have been just 11 non-fatal attacks during a period of 18 years. This is low in comparison to the 221 recorded cattle-related fatalities in Europe between 2000 and 2015, according to a study published in the Wilderness and Environmental Medicine journal.
A report by the Norwegian Institute for Nature Research suggests that the risks associated with a wolf attacking a human are "above zero, but far too low to calculate".
Lee Schofield, a co-author of the study, added, "Human-wildlife conflicts involving carnivores are common and must be addressed through public policies that account for people's attitudes for a reintroduction to be successful."
Rewilding supporters are also dubious about a formal reintroduction of wolves to Britain. Trees for Life and Rewilding Britain spokesperson Richard Bunting says, 'Wolves could undoubtedly thrive in Scotland, which is one of a handful of European countries still lacking a large terrestrial mammal predator. But wolves won't be back anytime soon because first, we need to learn how to coexist with these animals again.'
Rather than focusing on wolves, Bunting suggests a less controversial apex predator, the reintroduction of the Eurasian lynx, which is being supported by the Lynx to Scotland project.
'A carefully managed lynx reintroduction – another 'keystone species' vital for maintaining healthy living systems – is increasingly doable.
'This would make Scotland's natural world richer and stronger, providing wider benefits for nature restoration, climate resilience and economic prosperity. It would be a huge win for Scotland in the fight against extinction and be hugely popular.'

World coming up short on promised marine sanctuaries
"With less than 10 percent of the ocean designated as MPAs (marine protected areas) and only 2.7 percent fully or highly protected, it is going to be difficult to reach the 30 percent target," said Lance Morgan, head of the Marine Conservation Institute in Seattle, Washington. The institute maps the MPAs for an online atlas, updating moves to meet the 30 percent goal that 196 countries signed onto in 2022, under the Kunling-Montreal Global Biodiversity Framework. The ambition is notably at risk because "we see countries like the US reversing course and abandoning decades of bipartisan efforts" to protect areas of the Pacific Ocean, Morgan said. That referred to an April executive order by President Donald Trump authorising industrial-scale fishing in big swathes of an MPA in that ocean. Currently, there are 16,516 declared MPAs in the world, covering just 8.4 percent of the oceans. But not all are created equal: some forbid all forms of fishing, while others place no roles, or almost none, on what activities are proscribed or permitted. "Only a third of them have levels of protection that would yield proper benefits" for fish, said Joachim Claudet, a socio-ecology marine researcher at France's CNRS. Daniel Pauly, a professor of fisheries science at Canada's University of British Columbia, said "the marine protected areas have not really been proposed for the protection of biodiversity" but "to increase fish catches". A proper MPA "exports fish to non-protected zones, and that should be the main reason that we create marine protected areas -- they are needed to have fish", he said. When fish populations are left to reproduce and grow in protected areas, there is often a spillover effect that sees fish stocks outside the zones also rise, as several scientific journals have noted, especially around a no-fishing MPA in Hawaiian waters that is the biggest in the world. One 2022 study in the Science journal showed a 54 percent in crease in yellowfin tuna around that Hawaiian MPA, an area now threatened by Trump's executive order, Pauly said. Fishing bans For such sanctuaries to work, there need to be fishing bans over all or at least some of their zones, Claudet said. But MPAs with such restrictions account for just 2.7 percent of the ocean's area, and are almost always in parts that are far from areas heavily impacted by human activities. In Europe, for instance, "90 percent of the marine protected areas are still exposed to bottom trawling," a spokesperson for the NGO Oceana, Alexandra Cousteau, said. "It's ecological nonsense." Pauly said that "bottom trawling in MPAs is like picking flowers with a bulldozer... they scrape the seabed". Oceana said French MPAs suffered intensive bottom trawling, 17,000 hours' worth in 2024, as did those in British waters, with 20,600 hours. The NGO is calling for a ban on the technique, which involves towing a heavy net along the sea floor, churning it up. A recent WWF report said that just two percent of European Union waters were covered by MPAs with management plans, even some with no protection measures included. The head of WWF's European office for the oceans, Jacob Armstrong, said that was insufficient to protect oceanic health.

UK scientists alarmed by sudden surge in sea temperatures this spring
The seas around the UK are heating up fast, and scientists are raising the alarm. Earlier this week, the BBC reported that parts of the North Sea, English Channel and Irish coast are now as much as 4°C warmer than average, in what UK scientists are calling a 'super intense' marine heatwave. With surface temperatures already the highest ever recorded in April and May since monitoring began 45 years ago, researchers are warning of potential knock-on effects for marine life, as well as the general well-being of beachgoers. And it's not just the ocean feeling the strain. The UK is coming to the end of one of the warmest, driest springs in more than a century. Forecasts suggest this could be a sign of an even hotter summer to come. Marine heatwaves happen when sea temperatures exceed seasonal averages for at least five consecutive days. They usually last about two weeks. This one has lasted more than two months, compounding the effects of human-induced climate change. In the North Atlantic, sea surface temperatures have been increasing by around 0.3°C per decade over the last 40 years, according to the Met Office. 'Before we started having this exceptional weather this spring, the waters were already in a hotter state,' Dr Ségolène Berthou of the UK Met Office told the BBC. The hotter sea temperatures are in part a result of the UK's exceptionally warm, dry spring. In an article published in The Conversation, Matthew Patterson and Simon H Lee, both researchers at the University of St Andrews, explained that a high-pressure system has prevented cooler, wetter conditions from moving in – a 'blocked' or 'stuck' weather pattern that has led to devastating wildfires and sowed chaos across UK farmlands. The weak winds and strong spring sunshine that have accompanied this high-pressure system have allowed heat to build on the ocean's surface, too. Though marine heatwaves are still a relatively new phenomenon for the UK, they're expected to become more frequent and intense as the climate warms. Scientists are concerned the current flare-up may disrupt marine ecosystems, altering breeding cycles, enabling blooms of harmful algae or attracting jellyfish that thrive in warmer waters. Jellyfish sightings off UK coasts jumped 32 per cent following a marine heatwave that raised sea temperatures up to 4°C above average, according to the BBC. So far, the temperatures have not exceeded critical thresholds for mass marine die-offs. But the UK may only be seeing the beginning. Researchers caution that the long-term implications are unclear, since marine heatwaves have rarely affected cooler British waters. While the current marine heatwave may weaken slightly in the coming days as weather patterns shift, scientists say this could be a temporary dip. Forecasts suggest warm, dry conditions are likely to return, raising the risk of more extreme temperatures later this summer – both on sea and land. Oceans act as vast heat reservoirs, and warmer waters can push up air temperatures as sea breezes carry heat inland. That's what happened in May last year, when a brief marine heatwave contributed to unusually high land temperatures across the UK. With ocean heat running high and El Niño now fading, forecasters expect 2025 to rank among the hottest years on record. The Met Office has even warned of 'more than double the normal chance' of a hotter-than-average summer. As summer looms, the sea around Britain may offer an early warning of what's to come.

UK identifies atypical case of mad cow disease
A case of atypical "mad cow disease" has been found on a farm in eastern England, Britain's animal health agency said on Tuesday, May 20, but authorities said there was no food risk. A cow in the county of Essex showed clinical signs of bovine spongiform encephalopathy (BSE), as the neurologic disease is officially termed, and was culled on site, it said. The news came one day after Britain signed a post-Brexit agreement with the European Union, including a deal to reduce checks on food and plant products. BSE was first identified in Britain almost 40 years ago and has since spread around the world, causing a crisis in the beef industry. "Atypical BSE is distinct from classical BSE and is a spontaneously and sporadically occurring, non-contagious disease which is believed to occur at a very low level in all cattle populations," chief veterinary officer Christine Middlemiss said in a statement from the agency. The atypical variant sporadically occurs in older cattle, while the classic form is spread when farmers feed their herds with the meat and bone meal of infected animals. This is the fourth case of atypical mad cow disease in the United Kingdom since 2015. The previous occurrence of the disease occurred last December in Scotland. The classic form poses more danger to humans, while BSE is linked to the fatal human condition Creutzfeldt-Jakob disease, if contaminated meat is eaten. "There is no food safety risk" following the latest incident, James Cooper, deputy director of food policy at Britain's Food Standards Agency, said Tuesday. "There are strict controls in place to protect consumers from the risk of BSE, including controls on animal feed, and removal of the parts of cattle most likely to carry BSE infectivity." The government said it had informed the World Organisation for Animal Health as well as trading partners regarding the case. "This does not affect the UK's ability to export beef to other countries," it added. Britain culled millions of cows during a BSE epidemic in the 1990s. Under the new deal with the EU, the UK will be able to sell British burgers and sausages in the neighboring bloc.
